Hmm... there's a free trial going on, probably give you a good idea if the game is for you.

Otherwise, there's about a dozen threads already in the LotRO forum's that would answer your questions and give you some insight to various people's opinions on the game.  (Search key is your friend)

A number of magazines and websites have done reviews on the game (over 20) so Google is also your friend)

Oh yeah..I think there might even be an official LotRO web site out there

Play the trial, it should be good enough to decide if you like it or not.

It's a good game... But why don't your friend tell you what the game is all about?

Heh... see it's comments like that; that make people think you might be a bit "trollish".  Or perhaps you could enlighten the rest of us what exactly that comment did to help the OP with his question?

As for the OP's question:  I agree, it's best to try the trial.  Or, if possible even play it awhile with your friends account (assuming that he is a higher level than what the trial allows).  The more exposure you have to the game before you decide to buy it for yourself the greater chance you'll know exactly what it is like when you play it.

Regardless of which way you decide; you will always have more fun playing MMOs if you have friends to play it with.

And make sure your friends like the game as well...or you will have to deal with an empty friends list when you login one day...as that happened to me...

    They all moved on....

    Wow.. what a shame.

That must be why you dislike the game so much.  Any friends who ever did that to me without letting me know, I wouldn't be calling friends anymore...

    Cheers, though!

    Exactly!

I wonder how long he had been gone?  I'm thinking these weren't very close friends.  Probably just casual friends he had met in the game.

I guess I should have been a bit more specific in my original statement.  There is a "friends" list you can create once inside any MMO.  This will be made up of real-life friends, and new people that you meet inside the game.  Now sometimes friends we meet inside an MMO will become real-life friends as well, but more often then not they are just casual friends that we play with while online.

Now real-life friends... (I'm hoping for openedge's sake anyway) we have a bit more contact with.  We talk with them outside of the game, and usually have a lot of the same likes and dislikes... kinda why they became your friend in the first place... right?

It was these real-life friends I was referring to.  I have a group of people that I usually play with and we move from MMO to MMO as a group.  We all join the same kinship as well.  We've been playing MMO's since the first days of EQ... and table-top or LAN games before that.  Games like Decent, Warcraft 1&2, Castle Wolfenstein, etc.

Now I'm not sure about other people's friends... but I do know for my friends that I do not have to worry about logging into any game and discovering them "missing".  We are a bit closer than that.  We have a bit more loyalty to each other than that.  When we decide we aren't having fun anymore in an MMO we move as a group.

We did this with the move from EQ to SWG and then to EQ2 and then Vanguard briefly and now with LoTRo.  We each have other MMOs that we enjoy "on the side" as well; as some have and still are enjoying WoW, EvE Online, Guild Wars, and even CoX.

Well, good luck to you openedge... hopefully you'll find an active bunch of friends in EQ2.

But, they did enjoy my fine grasp of spelling and the English language....try it sometime...

And don't worry...we all whined together about all the issues with the game.. And we have talked, and I have found out they have moved to to other games...including several in EQ2...go figure..most went back to WoW or DAoC...as they felt the gameplay was more rewarding...

So, new guild, and rebuilding friends list in EQ2...has been great

Thanks for the concern tho guys!

No problem!  We're  a very caring bunch.

Glad you found a game that's fun for you though... that's what it is all about after all.
