Disney Online has announced that Pirates of the Caribbean Online, the pirate MMO based on the popular film franchise of the same name, has official launched.
NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif. - October 31, 2007 - Disney Online today announced that Pirates of the Caribbean Online (www.PiratesOnline.com), an immersive massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) and virtual world inspired by the popular film franchise, has launched for the PC and Mac platforms. Pirates of the Caribbean Online allows thousands of players to fully experience the adventures made famous in the films and explore beyond these boundaries in a quest to become the most legendary pirate on the high seas.
"The launch of Pirates of the Caribbean Online opens up an entirely new world of pirate adventures to thousands of fans who can now play alongside their favorite characters in a fully-immersive environment that builds on and goes beyond the epic stories created in the films," said Paul Yanover, Executive Vice President and Managing Director, Disney Online. "We believe the game's focus on action and adventure, combined with many customization options will appeal to a broad audience of both gamers and fans of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise as they set out on their own course to live the legend."
In Pirates of the Caribbean Online, players create and customize their own pirate, captain their own ship, and assemble a crew of their fellow rogues in an effort to become the Caribbean's most legendary Pirate. Along the way, players will interact with characters made popular by the films, like Jack Sparrow, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, and will also encounter a host of new characters and enemies unique to the game. To become the most notorious pirate, players must forge alliances, hunt for buried treasure, battle evil undead forces, and use cunning and strategy to outwit their foes.
Game features include:
- Create your own Pirate character - Players choose from over a million combinations to fully customize their own Pirate (body type, face, hair, clothing, names, etc.).
- Set sail on your own Pirate ship - Captain your own ship then recruit a crew of fellow players to set sail for the adventure of a lifetime.
- Quest for adventure and treasure - Embark on ship and land-based missions to locate buried treasure. Explore lush jungles, volcanic caves, and vast tropical islands but beware of traps, ambushes, and double-crosses which are an every day occurrence when keeping company with Pirates.
- Use advanced weaponry - Players engage in epic battles using a variety of weapons such as cutlasses, grenades, pistols and cannons and can unlock more powerful weapons as they improve their reputation as a fighter to be reckoned with.
- Become a legend - Master a variety of skills, including sword fighting, card playing, and treasure hunting to become the most notorious pirate in the world.
- Work your Voodoo Magic - Voodoo magic is used to heal, travel and cast curses on enemies.
- Get some Booty - Earn extra loot by competing in parlor games such as poker and blackjack.
- Build a notorious crew or guild - Players band together with others for expanded adventures and added power, forming a crew for quick battles or joining a guild for longer-term strategy.
- Grow your wealth with money and rare items - Hunt for buried treasure including gold, precious gems and mysterious artifacts.
The successful Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise, including Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006) and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007), has grossed close to $2.7 billion at the worldwide box office.
Pirates of the Caribbean Online, developed and published by Disney Online, is rated E10+ and features lower PC and Mac system requirements than most other games in this genre, allowing for easier access to a broader audience of players.
Players can download the game directly and access additional information at the game's Web site, www.PiratesOnline.com. A portion of the game is available for free and players can get unlimited access for a monthly subscription fee. At launch, Disney Online is offering new players subscriptions to Unlimited Access for a first-month fee of $4.95 and continuing with a $9.95 fee for following months.

I've been tentatively waiting for Pirates of the Burning Seas... I don't know much about this one - is it any good? What "portion is available for free" ? If I go download this now, can I try it out for a while without paying anything?
Perko
This game is intended mainly for kids, any adult playing it will become very quickly bored. Now if you and your kids want to play a MMO together, this probably is for you. Everything is very simplified so it is easy for kids to participate.
This is Disney attempting to lure the kids into MMO's.
You know its bad when a MMO releases and everyones like, wait...what game? Its already released? Dont you meant his game?
I hadn't heard of it either... gonna give it go though! Sure i saw the word "free" somewhere and i could think of worse things than spending my evening trying to find Johnny Depp mmmm oh i mean... meh, might be the closest i ever get
ewww I dont think Disney had that in mind when they put him in
Sure they did, whoever did the castng HAD to be a women
I'm not that bad really *cough* just kidding
Americans cram advert into everything... even on the downloader lol and the question i've seen asked in the FAQs don't sound like kids either.
Fine Ill let you do nasty things to Johnny if I get Kiera...deal?
I Tried This Game Earlier and it seemed a little... erm i cant put worlds to it but. Kiddy-ish.
I think thats about as close to words as i cant get, Oh and the graphics arent too good either. I Was Expecting more. When Looking at the screenshots about a month ago.
7-8 Year olds would play this. Well , It is a Disney Game!

DEAL!
I actually think its pretty good, maybe because i was expecting it to be dire. Certainly for the kiddies... the humour (and i suppose the theme) reminds me of Monkey Island
Some of the clothes are NOT for kiddies... and being slapped in the face and watching some guy having his flesh evapourated wouldn't have been for the kids either!
Its more like being in a cartoon and killing stuff to get the next cut-scene... I guess i have another day before HGL
You will get to interact with Jack Sparrow right off the bat actually. And Elizabeth Swan too. This game does seem to be directed mainly towards the younger generations, I would say anyone 6 to 14 will have fun with this game, atleast for a bit, with the older ones getting bored with the lack of carjacking, beating prostitutes, etc...
This game is very family friendly and I think it will do well. You can play free, but you will not get to play with the biggest/best ships, guns, swords, etc..... So I assure you if you like the game and continue to play you will eventually buy the subscription, which I think is still a low $10 bucks. So don't hesitate to download it, especially if you are like me and inbetween games, you will have something to waste your time on.
As a side note, I only played for the last three weeks of beta, and I enjoyed my time there even though I am 35 years old. What have you got to lose other then a little room on the hard drive?
Not so nice guy!
it was marked down to 5 a month XD
Actually its 9.95 a month with the first month at 4.95 if ya pre ordered. Its a great little game with fun game play and well thought out. Its not as kiddy as many of ya think as for the game play , its a very standard MMO. So many are waiting for POTBS but well lets just say its not what you think it will be as it was never designed to be an MMO and thats public knowledge. Wish I could say more but you will all soon know for yourselves and then you just may want to give POTCO a go the client is free and its way worth 9.95 for atleast a few month. Ive been wanting a good pirate game for so long and this little game is hitting the spot for me. The ship to ship combat is a hoot. Graphics wont blow ya away but im in 1280*1024 on a dual core 8800GTS and its smooth sailing for me to say the lest.
LOL for the record im 38 and having a hell of a good time in game. And due to being a beta tester I can always sign into the test server... kinda think of it as the adults only pool if you will as only adults were in the beta. My guilds the Assasins Alliance and its mostly made up of beta adultdswho seem like good peeps so look us up If ya need a hand...ARRRRR
Whether you are a kid or not,you won't enjoy this either way.
This just seems to be a poor attempt at making a quick buck.
The graphics are horrendous and controls feel static.
There no options whatsoever. So you're stuck playing it in this shitty ad ridden canvas of theirs.
I concur.
I played it for an hour or so.. only saw about three other people during that whole time.
An average kid's game.. not really worth the 10$/month pricetag.
Waiting for Fallen Earth, World of Darkness, Old Republic, FFXIV
Yet another reason to be ashamed of the gamer community. Here we have a game that was made for 9-11 yr olds, and we have the over 40 year old basement dwellers raising hell about the games PVP and lack of crafting.. The arrogance in thinking that every MMO is made to serve their demographic (I.E. white and nerdy) is astounding.
A good friend of mine is actually one of the producers on this and they asked my seven year old daughter to help beta test the game, she is enjoying it because hey they designed it for kids....let me repeat that for the comic book guy sitting in the basement with the pirate hat on..FOR KIDS. He told me last weekend that a never ending source of being creeped out was grown men writing these passionate emails about how cannons didn't have AOF damage and that chat wasn't totally open. This is why some gamers keep thier hobby a secret.
I don't get it... everyone has a right to their opinion and ofcourse their opinion is going to be dependant on what they themselves like.
Why so defensive?
Why so bothered by what the unintended gamers think?
Why did you bother at all?
You making a post like this and implying the gaming community should be ashamed of itself makes you a HYPOCRIT. I hope your daughter takes after her mother an that she stays away from my Mr Depp!
And just for the record - having avatars with huge boobs and tops that just about cover the nipples is not 9-11 friendly...
I don't get it... everyone has a right to their opinion and ofcourse their opinion is going to be dependant on what they themselves like.
Yes that dosen't lessen the creep factor nes pas?
Why so defensive?
Might want to look that one up in the dictonary.
Why so bothered by what the unintended gamers think?
They are not unintended if they are trying to mold Hello kiddie Island adventure into Shadowbane
Why did you bother at all?
Lard ass males ( Or socially retarded females for that matter ) playing childrens games smacks of hop in the van I have candy.

No no the community at large, just those of us that have to suffer through being aligned with this http://youtube.com/watch?v=HmgLOKRl5J0 Keep in mind the producers of the game even finds it creepy. I'll be sure to add the story about LouiseK chasing the pixilated Johnny Depp around tortuga and being concerned that a seven year old might steal him from her
And just for the record - having avatars with huge boobs and tops that just about cover the nipples is not 9-11 friendly...
Yes because as wel all know slightly large mammory glands will corrupt the kids....I'm not even going to get into the absuritty of that comment.
I actually take offense to the comments made about grown men playing this game is the equivlent to, "Hop in the van I have candy".
I am 35 I I beta tested this game for your so called friend. And I enjoyed it. I beta tested it, because that is what I do. I have been beta testing MMO's since the early 90's when it all started. I have worked for a couple of small game companies beta testing games for other formats such as PS2, PS, Sega, and xbox. I also have a 12 year old daughter, and another child on the way. My wife and I run a daycare out of our house. This shows you I am around children all day long, and I am probablly the opposite of what you consider me, in the fact, that if I could claim it as a sport, I would hunt pedophiles.
Yet, you will come here and claim any grown man that plays a game such as Pirates of the carribean has to be a pedophile? You need to get a firm grip on reality and learn that the world is not black and white, it is a continuos shade of grey. It is completely ignorant of you and your so called friend that produced this game to claim you are "Creeped out" by grown men and women playing this game.
To be honest I considered continueing to play this game due to my family and work time commintments I don't have the time required to play your typical adult MMO to a satisfactory pace. Where as in Pirates of the carribean I can actually log in and make some decent and fun progress in a very short time. Not because it give me a thrill to interact with kiddies. If I wanted to interact with kiddies I would log into World of Warcraft.
Not so nice guy!
There is nothing creepy about wanting a game to do well. If you dont like gamers, then dont frequent a gaming forum.
Im 27 and very avid gamer, however I dont live in my mothers basement.
Dont stereotype people just cause you dont like their view point.
Your kid lacks taste.
By the way,i don't wear a pirate hat.
I prefer an eye patch.
If it was intended for kids, why was the beta geared toward those of us who were and are obviously not kids? Was there a condition somewhere in the EULA which said we were not supposed to be beta testing the game unless we were 9-11 years old? Or stating that was the intended age range of the game?
Do us all a favor: grow up, keep your asinine opinions about anyone over 11 ( and apparently only ,males )playing this POS being perverts and pedophile predators, and your general disdain shown for the gamer community at large, to your fucking self. It will improve all of our opinions of you greatly if you never post again.
Have a nice day.
Why the hate? So this game does not suite your play style, there is no need to bash it. If a family wanted to play a MMO this is perfect for them.
If you need to take your aggressions out on something go play a FPS or something, don't bring your nastiness here.
