I will be honest I started playing MMO's with WOW, If I were so inclined could I purchase install and play EQ now having never played before? I love druids and play a fury in EQ2 but I keep hearing how great the EQ druid is. I ask because I tried getting into DAoC at a very late time and found ti generally full of elitist who neither cared to help, or even wanted new blood in the game.
If I were to start any idea what server, or any invites to join an established guild, judging from the amount of posts here the game still has an active community.

Hi
I started with EQ when i was 11 and played till i was 16... 5 years of pure fun. I too would like to know whether this game has anything to offer to a more... casual player.
I'm a student who plans to become a game designer when I'm finished studying and i have recently been playing WoW, EQ2, VG, AL and a few others. Unfortunatly, none of these give me that feeling which EQ did. I remember at the end of the day, I'd jump on my school bus with a big smile on my face hoping their was space for my sexeh necromancer to join a group in HHK. Those are the days i miss, i miss EQ.
My question is very much the same as the OP.
Can a returning player get back into this game and start a fresh? I used to play on Venril Sathir, hint my forum name, but i remember it merging with... AB? I think i remember correctly.
Can you also let me know what the bazaa is like now. I can imagine the low level items costing a BOMB because the high level players who are making new characters can afford it... please tell me I'm wrong.
I may purchase a station pass once i buy all the crimbo prezzies so any information will be greatly apreciated.
To the OP:
Druids in EQ and very different than they are in WoW. EQ druids are fantastic but don't expect to turn into a bear and stuff like that

WAR is coming, are you prepared?

I'm not playing right now. Soo my answer can be wrong.
But first, it is always possible to come back to a game. whenever you want to lvl 1-80 or only to play your old toon. The fact is, it could be frustrating if you don't log in at precise time, I mean, people are grouping alt at specific time, could be hard to find a group, but it's doable. The progression server might have more lower level. But you won't have all the expansion *active yet. For my part, I've convinced my friend to come back, to duo a team and play it only for fun. Our goal is not to get to 75 the fastest possible, we will duo and might take some ppl in our group along the road.
You want to join us, the problem is, we will only play each sunday from 18h to 23h (EST time, -5 GMT)
But if you still want to play with us, we will be on Prexus (therris thule). going to have a semi-tank + semi healer ... soo far, it might be Shaman + beast lord .. Soo anything is welcome For our in-game name ... I've not thought about it yet
It would be a long, hard, tedious road. The grind from 1-65 in EQ is amazing. The problem is no one groups anymore, so you will be doing it alone. The max level is either 75 or 80 now not 65, so you won't even be able to enjoy that part of the game. Once past 65 mobs hit too hard, and you won't be able to get your spells without being in a raid guild. Some of the best 65-70 spells are rewards to group missions that require a raid equipped tank, raid equipped healer, and raid equipped DPS.
Now, that may not sound too bad, but remember no one groups.
Could you start everquest now?
No, graphics too dated as is their gameplay
Dont listen to trolls like this. The graphic is ok, but its not EQ2 or Vanguard quality.
Gameplay is far from dated. Its very different compared to the newer mmos though. Casters for example, have to think and make more of a choice when it comes to spellcasting in this game. While Wow, EQ2, Vanguard etc have crazy mana regen , insta or 2sec casting time on spells...this game have much slower mana regen and more like 7-10 sec casting time on the spells....because of this, the casters have to plan and watch their mana pool more carefully then in other games. Its less button mashing.
You can solo in this game, but dont expect to quest grind like in Wow...
If you want a challenging game, try this one out
While EQ was my favorite game I've ever played, including non-MMOs I don't think playing it now would be much fun. There aren't many lower level players and it's not the same as it used to be. Also as someone already stated nobody groups any more, and that was the best part of EQ. If they were to make a classic server I would say yes start playing in a heartbeat, but not in it's current state.
"God, please help us sinful children of Ivalice.."
1) Maelin or stromm servers are your best bet if you play US time, Antonius Bayle if European.
2) Look here if you want an idea of servers activities : http://www.lavanet.no/progress/index.php?expansion=Ashengate
3) A brief look on the 'World' : http://samanna.net/gen.info/maps.shtml (also a good place for shaman and Paladin apprentice)
4) A lot of useful knowledge for the Beginner are here : http://forums.station.sony.com/eq/posts/list.m?topic_id=34207
5) Your home : http://thedruidsgrove.org/eq/forums/index.php
6) The majority of recruiting guilds post their needs in Guild lobby on Plane of Knowledge
Good luck
I recently went back for a bit. All the low level zones are pretty empty. And if you are used to the levelling speed of WOW, you will be quickly frustrated. EQ is a much tougher game.
The graphics are dated, but not unacceptable.
Honestly, you really need to have a lot of people backing you and a lot of determination to play the game as it stands from a complete beginning. Even getting PLed it's just day after day after day of grind just to get through even the basic levels. You need to invest a ton of time and have people willing to pull your ass up to where everyone else is to actually get to where you can really enjoy doing anything at this point unfortunately. As the guy said above, there is nobody around to group with anymore, they're all up top.
Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.
EAT ME MMORPG.com!
graphics too dated as is their gameplay
Deaths, bugs, community (good or bad), quests, gears, levels, skills raising are the spices of the meal winning or loosing. if you cant get your hearth pounding in a game, you will leave no matter what.
Most of the new/alt players take the fast and solid path ( best gears) of the TSS zones from 1-10 to 50-55.
jesus christ, you bunch of whiny wow kids. Leveling in everquest is nothing when compared to hardcore grinders like lineage2 or 2moons. It's actually very acceptable and just the right pace.
This generation of mmorpg players are so used to WoW and LOTRO easy mode leveling-to-max-in-a-month mentality, any mmorpg that actually pose some challenge to leveling instantly gets labled as a "grind fest", "tough" and shot down.
Also with the new expansions in the last 2 years, a VAST amount of solo and single group contents have been added to everquest. You dont "grind" anymore, it's about doing the dungeon instances and pretty fun chained quests/missions (with objectives) while getting exp. The old days of sitting in a spot grind mobs over and over doesnt apply anymore unless you want to do it that way.
And why are you people even commenting on this if havent played for years?! All this bs about requiring raid to get spells, need raid equipped tank to do group missions etc are complete nonsense. EQ has one of the best spell system now (introduced 2 or 3(?) expansions back). The days of only raid boss drop high level spells are long gone, and you definitly dont need "raid equipped" tank to do missions or single group contents...actually never did unless the healer or enc sucked.
Bottomline, EQ has the BEST and MOST contents of any mmorpg on the market. EQ2 has less content but better graphics and more WoW (easier) feel than EQ. Either one is a fine choice, depends on how hardcore/casual you want to be.
WoW/LOTRO are just flicks, you play for a months or 2, max out, do the limited(compared to eq) endgame maps a few times, get bored then quit.
fyi the other game i am playing now is 2moons, this game you can honestly call it a hardcore grind. But the combat is so much fun like playing diablo2, i dont even look at the exp bars and it has 150 levels and a very balanced skill tree/item customization systems.
I love EQ more then words can say, and i have to tell you no.
The graphics are dated, true, but they arent bad. Gameplay may be dated but it is the same gameplay that is still predominate in most MMOs.
The problem is that you will be alone, and i mean ALONE. There are very few low level characters in the game right now and most of those are twink alts that someone is playing decked out with enough gear that they can solo anything near their level so they dont group.
I tried it again not all that long ago. Logged on my low teens Ranger and thought i would hit the Oasis, in the day that was one of the most crowded zones in the game, i was all alone. I went into Freeport (which i got lost in because everything looked different) and never ran into another person. It was sad really.
There actually were a fair number of people in the newbie starting area but once i got out into the real Norrath there wasnt anyone.
If you still decide to give it a shot Druid would be one of the ways to go. You can play for a LONG time solo with a Druid (this i know) but you will have a hard time finding groups for dungeons or even the classic areas like Crushbone.
Maybe it is better now but i really dont see how it can be.
The beauty of EQ was the ride, not the ending. There is so much to do and see levels 1-50+ why would you want to be in a hurry to get there. I started playing EQ a couple months after it was released and i have get to level 50 with my main for about 2-3 years. Granted i was pretty casual, and i played a ton of alts, but i was in no hurry because i was having one hell of a time.
Something to keep in mind if you want to play this game. It takes time. A LOT of time... A LOT of time...
It's not as bad as FFXI but, it's pretty time consuming.
WoW on the other hand is almost like short attention span EQ.
As far as entertainment - I think they both give you excellent bang for your buck. I'm currently playing WoW but, I introduced a friend of mine to the game (EQ) who has been loving it for years and still does - just the other day she sent me an email thanking me for introducing her to EQ all those years ago heh. If she wasn't on a mac server I would probably join em.
um... na, but as the people have stated earlier, its ALOT better lvling than Lineage2 or FF11. And for your sanity avoid VG.
So if you have to start a new, I guess EQ would be ok if you can't wait for anything else..
