"Funcom is using a program called "SpeedTree" to create the forests and vegetation in their upcoming title, Age of Conan. Recently SpeedTree released several screenshots showing off the amazing forests from Age of Conan."

Think a good choice. I like speedtree. I first saw it in DAOC and thought it was done well, it has for sure come a long way.

Link mentioned speedtree in use on other games I didn't know about. Pretty neat.

    No shit.

Can't say I like it. Every game that uses SpeedTree has almost identical looking trees. Takes you at most 5 seconds to figure out if a game uses SpeedTree or not.

I am very worried about what kind of beast I'll need to run AoC with those graphics, beacuse graphics are one of the features I like most in this game.

Also, that whole DX9/DX10 mess leaves a bad taste in to my mouth (recent Crysis news). Not sure if Funcom does the same shit though.

It's a good choice for an MMO.   They didn't want to use something as intensive as CryEngine.

The new SpeedTree's look amazing, with thousands of different types of Vegitation.

Spot the Acorn and win $50!

Looking at the other games that use the tech on the speedtree website, the newer version that AoC uses looks great, I can honestly admit I havent seen an environment in the gme that looks boring or that I wouldn't want to be there exploring.

Wow SpeedTree looks awesome! I'm glad I remember the launch of XP. How it was just as hated and poorly talked about as Vista is now. I can't count how many people said they would never use it. Now I'm not going to be stuck with a high end system running DX9 because I didn't have the forsight to get Vista.

Gods, this game is so damn pretty.

Anyone know the stats on beta? How many people are getting in; expected system specs; ect, ect.

Dont know what prefered PC stats are, just that in the last address they said 'thousands' will be invited over the next few months as the Beta stage moves more into a full blown 'General' stage. Alot of Tech beta tests I believe are scheduled too, with one not long ago. Looks like Open Beta in the new year at somepoint.

Environments are amazing and yes, it would be a great choice to use speed tree. But I hope it will not end up to be a game with amazing character and environmental details and some very crappy spell effects and casting animation.

Otherwise, this is amazing and it better be since I been hooked on following this game's development for a while now.

    Screeny looks v nice.

OT and directed at AA. Lets say someone got a beta invite (lets call him Tod) and lets say Tod went to DL the thing. Possible without changing your browser? (2MB cap on IE)

Personally I wouldn't know, but if I had to guess it would be the same as other mmo's when Open Beta comes, different site's or companies own, hosting the client for download, like LotrO and Perfect World both had this for tech and closed/ open beta (with a code you got mailed once accepted) Funcom would prob give you set codes and access to download client from their own servers as of right now. I don't think the OS really matters as everything would be self extracting - so possible in parts I guess. Sometimes i've experience in other games not the full client either as you update via the server its ran from - like guild wars.

    MMORPG's have trees?

LOL,  I play EVE...we're a little short on trees out in space....

But if we had em, I'd say Speed Tree's would be just fine....and I think they'll be a great addition to AOC......

But I do believe the game will take a lot of PC hardware to run at high settings.... VG was just the first of the next GEN games in this regards..... expect others to follow suit.  Hoping they have a low graphics setting like LoTRO did that worked well for me.....

Screw it...just gonna have to tell the wife its time for a new gaming laptop....

Thats a good point there. It looks like AoC will need a graphics cards with Pixel Shader 2.0 at least. Considering Guild Wars is playable on Pixel Shader 1.1 and LotRO playable with a 1.4 Pixel Shader, Funcom are pushing the bar up a bit.

You can find pixel shader 2.0 capable cards out there from 3 years ago.

I think it will be interesting to see how it turns out in the end with F.C being quoted as saying the game will be highly scalable (hardware wise)
