Poll: Good or Bad

Let's face it, very nearly every MMO is divided into two faction: the good guys or the bad guys. So, when you do get the choice between only one of two main factions, which do you instinctively choose? Alliance or Horde? Imperial or Rebel? Statesman or Arachnos? Queen Heather Graham or Overlord Christopher Lee?

[Usually, I always play Dark -except for WoW where I play Alliance. I don't like Horde cities. I think their public convenience are likely to be unsanitary].

Neither. Why should I conform to someone else's stereotypes?

    About a 80-20 split.

It really depends on my mood. If I've had a good day, I'll play Alliance (for a WoW example), if I'm pissed - horde. Most of the time I'm in a great mood, so most of the time I'm 'good'. But in some games, it's really hard to tell who's good and who's evil, even in WoW.

The Horde and the Alliance aren't evil vs good. They're gray vs grey. And such is life...

Because that's the whole point of 99% of MMOs. Didn't you notice? in fact, you can't play unless you make that decision. Really, the obtuseness of some people.

most people think im a "bad" guy in real life for some reason ( until they get to know me then usually end up being like me more than they thought) . so being seen as a "good" guy is kinda nice once in a while.

Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

I always let the class I am most interested in or enjoy playing the most do the deciding for me.  If the class happens to be dark well then I am mostly a bad guy. Not in a jerk sort of way mind you. Then again I always roll at least 2 characters at least one for each side.

Good. I've tried playing evil but I really suck at it I always feel pity or equal so I just give up and play the good guy.

I definitely prefer it when the faction split is not on the matter of good and evil, but when there is such a definition I more often go with the "evil" side.

Generally I really dislike Good vs Evil, black vs white 1 on 1 settings. It's uninspired, so artificial and lacks the means to personal identification. More often than not, these days it's an easy way to cope with shallow, badly thought out and written lore that still seems to be stuck in it's conceptual phase on launch. Which comes to no surprise as there's hardly any decent writers attatched to MMO's. I won't claim it won't work, but there's enough settings out there that don't feel they need to justify the motivation and quirks of it's world's denizens other than 'yes, but you see race A does such and such because they're evil by nature and race B does the opposite because they're goody two-shoes.'.

Rather give me a world and backstory where no clear lines on alignement have been drawn, where races or camps don't fall into generalized stereotypes, where their actions in specific situations give them a flavored history, both with drawbacks and things to praise. Conflict with deep motivations provides entertaining stories. At least that creates a true identity and makes the world and it's inhabitants feel more alive, which in turn aids to ease personal identification and thus enjoyment. At least that's my opinion.

It doesn't stop players' characters from being evil, good or somewhere in between.

Usually I play rogue type characters, dependant on the situation my actions would come out as either of the clich

    I don't like dichotomies.

Good and evil are really subjective, they are relative and different for every person, so really they don't exist.  Besides I don't like the stereotypes that games use.

Even if you wanted to do one faction verses another faction, every character on both factions would have their own goals and methods.  This better reflects the amoral world we live in, and the human condition, much more interesting to me.

But in DnD terms I always played a nuetral nuetral.

Don't you worry little buddy. You're dealing with a man of honor. However, honor requires a higher percentage of profit

People,  people - you are over-rationaliing your answers.

My question was basic - I am not asking you to define the moral system on which you live your real and online lives, i am asking, when an MMO gives you no other choice, what do you take, light or dark?

The "Bad guys". You're not bound by rules. You dont have to follow the moral code. Also, they seem to have more mature players in MMO's.

That also seems true to me.

Whether SWG Imperial or Overlord EQ2 or WoW Horde, the 'dark side' seems to have more helpful, more rounded players than those of the 'light side' (I am not saying 'all'; I am just saying 'more'). Anyone else noticed this? Or disagree?

If theres no other choice i always pick the bad guys since im a evil bastard at heart

There is no good or evil, there is just might. (is that the right retranslation anyways?)

Having that said, i simply chose the side that profits me in a game. If that is percieved evil by the players or not isnt really an issue for me..

Good and Evil can exist in stories and games which is whats great about them.  Yes in real life everything is relative, but we can have our sterotypes in games and enjoy them because it's not real.  Personally I prefer to have a game with Good and Evil, but it's also nice to have a choice to convert to one side or the other.

Never could play a bad guy. Hard to relate to. But a good guy that does evil things to bad guys... thats certainly always interested me. Luckily my game of choice has room for exactly this kind of character concept

  • ZikielZikiel Member Posts: 1,138

Usually bad, whatever has the better classes- ie. I'd pick Shadow Knight over some foofy Paladin. Same with races, usually human, but if not that, then Dark Elf over High any day. It's just that the quote-end quote evil side usually has neater stuff.

  • dirtyjoe78dirtyjoe78 Member Posts: 400

Dark side ftw (they gots cookies)...On a serious note if the classes are cookie cutter for both sides then dark every time, most of the time it depends on class/race abilities and stats what side i pick...although i usually end up on the evil side.
