Hellgate:London vs Tabula Rasa

Ok, here's a straightforward one:

If any of you guys played retail versions of both games can you give us a short rundown of differences? I mean things like pacing, the degree of "twitchiness", overall sense of immersion, group play and stuff like that.

This isn' t a call to rate one game over the other. (I'm sure both are excellent at providing the type of experience they are designed for).. it is the basic difference of the "feel" that interest me.

p.s. I just bought Hellgate: London and I'm really getting in love with it. It can be very fast paced and it is very accomodating regarding whether you want to group or play solo. However, I'd like to know more about the other great us-vs-aliens instanced MMO that came out at the same time. I'm sure a lot of people are torn between the two and they'd like to know more about the basic differences in the type of gameplay experience they might expect before they make their decision.

there is no twitchiness in Tabula Rasa, because you can Lock On to enemies.

The NPC's in Hellgate are as thick as 2 planks.

And the Voiceacting is some of the worst ive yet to encounter.

Hellgate London is both buggy and uninspired multiplayer.

After 4 hours, we just gave up teaming and got on with our seperate quests. There is no LAN option and all the classes are designed to be soloed. There is no easy team dynamic and no quests or bosses that require more than one player to complete.

If there is another cinematic as good as the intro, I'll bother finishing the game. Otherwise, the lure of multiplayerness will call me back to my MMO's.

I'm from England too, the voice acting is foreign. The map's of London aren't drawn by anyone with any love for the place. Although massively overhyped and the thought of paying a subscription utterly ludicrous, this game is still fun. It would be more fun still in six months time at half the price with some serious patching.

But the gameplay is light years more enjoyable then TR. I mean it's mindless, and all about looting good gear and modding it out. But it's fun as hell. Pun intended!

    People still talk about Crapgate:London?

Sure diablo was good for its day but then again so was everquest...both styles feature tired ass gameplay, we dont need a remake of either. If we did thats what titan quest is for.....

All that aside I wouldnt buy anything made by EA.

I have played them both a fair amount:

TR: Slow pacing, plays like a traditional MMO. Combat is a little faster than most MMOs, but it's not as much of a departure from the "old school" MMOs as was advertised. Mobs do not spawn or move like other MMOs, but it is pretty much lock and click.

The interface in TR is very much a MUD style game with slash commands everywhere. This annoyed me enough to stop playing.

HGL: Fast paced. Twitch play is supported with 2 of the classes, minus the jumping. The other 4 classes can do some strafing, but are more stat based.

The interface is fairly smooth. HGL is not much of an RPG or an MMO though. The grouping and PVP are very, very rough, as are the chat options and RP. HGL seems promising, but right now it's just a mix between Diablo 2 and Doom 3, with a lot of minor bugs.

Both games: Lackluster quests, lots of bugs. Overall, both games were fun, but HGL is much more fast paced and has lots of random stuff, plus the monsters are scarier, and the team is throwing out promises which I think they can keep. HGL was my preference, but they are both fairly solid.

If you want a fun action-style game with a few MMO elements, HGL is your pick. If you want a more traditional MMO with better RP and chat options, (and some very slight updates to combat) TR all the way.

I've played both games post retail.

Tabula rasa is a fairly decent game for what it is. It's fun for a time specially if you have some friends to party with or a clan. Problem i found with it is... not alot of content. It's very railed meaning you're usually pushed along one direction of story theres not many choices in location to lvl or anything. And you can reach the cap fairly quickly.

Hellgate london also a decent game for what it is. You can't go into it saying HEY heres a revolutionary MMO. it's not. It's a hack and slash game like diablo or shampions of norath or titan quest. but with multiplayer thrown in for the people who want to use it... you don't have to but if you wanna it's there. Me and my friend have a blast teaming up together but you by no means need to party to experience anything in the game. Voice acting like they said isn't all that great but honestly it's a hack and slash game not some high end fps with an in depth NPC involvment. Get a mission kill some mobs get some loot the end.

Both games are good if they are what you're looking for. Both are of different ilk and you won't like them they're not your thing.

Some people have VERY oppinionated stances on these games as they are niche games. If they're not your thing you'll think they suck. This doesn't mean they DO just means the person didn't like it. I happen to like both games for what they are. I don't play TR anymore cause of the content but it doesn't make it a bad thing... just not for me ATM.

Anyway that being said Watch some gemaply videos read some forums... if a friend has it go check it out for yourself. But in all honestly you'll never get a non biased oppinion from this forum i sure never have.

Try see for yourself and decide which is more you're style of fun.

They partnered with EA and thus their business tactics are the same.  The game itself is rather boring and lacks and real knee gripping action especially if your good at fps.  The quests are as lame as hell, and the skills/environments are horrible and uninspired in almost every possible way.

I loved diablo 2 and was even gonna upgrade my computer in order to play it, but I cant kid myself...

Like comparing apples and oranges, there is not much similar at all.  Hellgate is basically a FPS with a few MMO features, TR is a full MMO.   You can bet that you will tire of Hellgate a lot faster than TR, just a big difference in content, Hellgate having very little of it.

All depends on what you like to play, not what others think, only you can make that decision.

Oh and don't kid yourself, Hellgate is not up to Diablo standards.  There are multiple reviews that stress that point.   With the silly subscription model, their servers will be pretty much dead in 6 months or less.

I can tell from your post that you haven't even played HGL.  Yet here you are on the forums talking smack about it.

    Pretty pathetic IMO..
