The game is definately worth another shot. I just came back after a few months off and i love playing the game now. Servers have way more people on them then they did before, so its easier to find groups. The game has a lot to offer and will get better as time goes on.
I play VG since release, but with lots of breaks. I got bored of every other MMO out there, I wanted something big and complex, but thas was to the time after GU2. I couldnt play because of CTDs like every 5min. I played lots of single player games until GU3 came out. Now I have no CTDs (or just one per day), the performance is great and I can finally play this game. Its great now, Im really happy with it.
Does Vanguard need a pretty hefty gaming rig to play it still. Yes. To be honest it does still require a good gaming rig(your 1.6ghz and 1 gig ram with a geforce4200 card will not handle this game - sorry).
I would say VG probably needs a *good* PC to run. However I would more likely say at launch it needed a "compatible" PC to run the game. By "compatible" I mean combinations of hardware that were actually tested by the one guy responsible for all the code which was written in practically the last 12 months of development. M$ were originally going to do the testing but obviously that fell over pretty fast. This is all documented stuff anyhow...
Sadly I think the months after release have been nothing more than testing period pushed onto the public. The official forums and here after launch were comedy and also tragedy. Though I acknowledge that people on here have had increasingly better experiences. I don't think I 'd like the game to become a roaring success or "do better" because it opens the gateway to even more shoddy releases which "we'll patch later". Later possibly being never in many developers past actions.
I've stuck to my guns on this since launch and I'm afraid it means when I try the trial island, nothing short of a miracle will alter my viewpoint. VG doesn't have to be spectacular it has to be amazingly spectacular. One CTD and I'm off . See why I don't think it will happen ?
Maybe I will be wrong but I wouldn't like to be as it hits a new rock bottom in rushed releasing of software.

There is noone forcing you to test the trial island or even like Vanguard. So with those preferences I don't actually think you are even remotely interested so why even try. There must have been alot of games out of those zillions other good games that offers trials that you didn't bother to test just because you simply wasn't interested in the game.
I'll be downloading the trial out of pure curiosity as to how far a game like VG can be "fixed" after its release. Also to see if engine really is that badly flawed. A few people on here have discussed that idea. Like I say seriously doubt I'll stick around. Its a car crash type thing but heck least VG get one chance in a billion of me playing it to any decent level. If im honest its also so I can flame on if the whole game is still feeling rougher than sandpaper and crashing more than windows ME. VG if its still as bad as launch deserves that at least
Is this fair ? Well... If you think I'm being harsh know one else I know would touch the game with a very long stick. Since games only get one chance to make a first impression any later impressions are going to be tainted so its not like most people using the trial will be going in with the mindset that VG was a complete masterpiece and success.
Good luck VG is also I can really say in light of what its got to do.
If you're burned out on WoW or looking for a game with more depth then LoTR's then maybe Vanguard is that game.
Piffle. This tired old marketing catchphrase straight out of the McQuaid talking points memo is such nonsense. Vanguard has no more depth than WoW or a dozen other games. That's just something the e-peeners tell themselves while they kill cartoon monsters just like everyone else.

"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."
I am thinking about re-subbing to the game, i quit the game some 8 months ago, i only got to level 13 with my druid. I played on the FFA server and it was damn brutal. Chinese plat farmers hunting u down and killing u relentlessly. The game world seemed huge but i cam across very few people in my time in the game. I also found the textures of the world to be very of putting as alot of them didn't seem to fit together The main thing that really pissed me of was travelling the huge distances for quests only to find at the end a crappy item and very little xp. Also the graphics for me in game just seemed to be grey and metallic, like EQ2 which really turned me of.
With all the changes I have read in the past few months, is it worth coming back at this time, or waiting another 2-3 months? I felt this game had alot of potential but just seemed dead and far from finished while i played it.
Why would a Chinese plat farmer kill you relentlessly? Is the name of your character "plat"?
i was gone since april and just came back and im loving it More stable .And tried lots of new ones and Old ones like wow eq 2 Ect ect and This can only get better .

I totally agree. I also beta tested it and quited 1 month after the release due to bugs, low FPS, etc.
I've just came back to VG and I'm also loveing the game!

What a very sad and unfulfilled life you must live to feel the need to play a trial version of a game for the purpose or flaming people you don't know on forums. Very sad...
Vanguard should enhance the medieval fantasy feel of the game. So many games look cartoonish ***to me*** and lack that Tolkien feel. Even LotR fails in many respects for me.
Vanguard needs taverns. Perhaps player run taverns. Medieval music, bards playing music. Implement the immersion and community features of SWG into Vanguard. [In fact, all games should do this.]
----- WoW and fast food = commercial successes. I neither play WoW nor eat fast food.
background: Late Beta member (many peeps would say old launch was "beta"). I believe the consensus in the community is that Vanguard was originally launched before it's time.
It is safe to say that Vanguard has transcended the dismal beginning into what has become a legitimate contender for your mmorpg $dollar$.
Have you tried Vanguard lately? Sworn them off?
Give them another try. N_O_W is the time. You will not be disappointed. This game is getting it's sea-legs and stabilizing.
Just my 2cents...

Server: Formerly Tharridon, now hailing from Sartok
Started in Beta 3. Picked it up at release. Quit. Gave it a second, third, and as of Oct, a fourth look.
Supposedly, they've improved performance. I can't rightly say as my performance was just fine before. However, the game no longer wants to work with my SB X-Fi, though it worked just fine as of June/July-ish.
Core gameplay is the same, though. The first 15 or so levels are pretty fast, and fun enough, but after that it just devolves into another mind-numbingly repetitious grind of ding-loot-grats, just more time consuming than it's contemporaries by an order of magnitude.
The servers are more populated since the mergers, though the conversation is general chat still hasn't changed from the "WoW is soo much cooler than this game! You played WoW? You fail at life because WoW is only for kids, VG is for hardcore players with shitloads of free time^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H skill!" BS, so who knows if that's a bonus, or not.
I gotta agree, and I know that this is going to make me sound like a wet blanket but here goes.
I resubbed last night for the first time since my first month after beta ( I was in beta for awhile). I had this crazy notion back then that if I actually bought the game and saw it live it would change dramatically. I was wrong.
Needless to say I've been hearing so many great things about it lately I had to give it a go again. I gotta say not *that* much has changed.
I must have played for about 3 hours, and an hour again this morning. I didn't get bored which is good, but then again I played Beta even with all the crashes and I still found it worth some of my time.
I have a much better computer now, then I did then, and still running it on the Highest settings is ridiculous. Performance hasn't improved much at all. Game Load time could be much better, and going through chunks still stops you dead in your tracks, just it takes slightly less time to load it.
Combat hasn't changed, it's still the basic combat format, the chains aren't really that great as most of the time they have no rhyme or reason.
I did notice the ships EVERYwhere, which was awesome, and the flying mounts that you can rent.
Ultimately even with all the stuff they haven't changed, it looks like I'll be subbing until something else comes out. The character selections are mainly great because of the different classes, and rolling different characters and classes is just fun altogether. They also have about a lot of different ways to play which means I'm not stuck killing or questing all day. Vanguard is a glorified time waste. Really when I just have about an hour or two a day to play games, thats really all I'm doing is wasting time, so this will fit in somewhat nicely.
Hopefully the new updates will add something that will keep me around when the new games start hitting shelves. Right now I don't see it happening. But this is still the most diverse game out there right now, and to me, that means something.
Meh, the ONLY reason Vangaurd isn't that hot is because of how much it demands computer wise. When will Devs learn to create a much, much wider graphics options that will allow many, many more people to play the game?
One reason WoW is so huge is because practially any computer out there can run it with minimal fps lag. I've seen WoW run on 256megs of ram, what's Vangaurds minimum? 2gigs? Yah, not going to be popular with those kind of requirements, no matter how good the game is.
I hope other games take note of how trying for those "killer" graphics will NOT bring in the "killer" $$$ if people have to go buy a $2k+ (more likely $2.5-$3k) dollar computer to even play it.

Nah, not really One reason WoW is so huge is because practially any computer out there can run it with minimal fps lag. I've seen WoW run on 256megs of ram, what's Vangaurds minimum? 2gigs? Yah, not going to be popular with those kind of requirements, no matter how good the game is.
256 MB of ram I can't really think that WOW actually did run that good in areas like SW or IF. Or any other semicrowded place, or honestly didn't run good at all. I can run Vanguard on a computer with 1g ram and built in graphic card, nvidia 6150LE...
The problem for Vanguard in this matter was not that it demanded a good computer, it was maybe because it didn't run that well on a computer that should have been able to do that. And here people have been argued what is a good computer, but, it didn't always run well on computer with specs higher then recommended.
I hope other games take note of how trying for those "killer" graphics will NOT bring in the "killer" $$$ if people have to go buy a $2k+ (more likely $2.5-$3k) dollar computer to even play it.
That is constantly done, games is in alot of sence the driving force behind evolving computers. So there's no need to take note on this matter as games have always been released with high system speccs and been successful.
Originally posted by Teala As evryone knows I have a love hate relationship with SOE and of course with their games. Vanguard is just such a game. Here is a game that I feel needs to be given a second chance if you are a fan of MMORPG's and quit a few months back or a first time look for those of you who thought it would be a bad game. Does Vanguard need a pretty hefty gaming rig to play it still. Yes. To be honest it does still require a good gaming rig(your 1.6ghz and 1 gig ram with a geforce4200 card will not handle this game - sorry). However with that bing said the games performance issues have been delt with continuely since its launch and it has improved greatly since then. The last patch we saw a huge increase in performance in many areas after they developers did a lot of optimization tweaks to the graphics. So the game is defiantely running smoother and better then ever. There are lots of new quest and additions since the game launched and yes you can solo in Vanguard. Whether you are a group player of a solo'er this game can accomadate you. Also, if you're into a game with good customiztion and character development then maybe you should be looking at Vanguard. This is one place the game is pretty unique and it is one of the last true MMORPG's when it comes to this. With the number of classes(some unique takes on your favorite classes like Cleric) available and playable races(with their own unique traits) and the almost overwhelming ability to tweak your character removes the cookie cutter character development you may have encountered in other games. Add to that titles and the myriad of armor and weapons and you'll see why this game is one of the best games to come along in years. Other things that have been improved are many of those broken quest are now fixed. Travel in game over great distances is much easier with riftways, mounts and flying mounts!). The crafting is getting better and the balance of crafted and quested items is almost perfect. The economy in game is improving. Lots of new players(like my two brothers - one who use to play came back and he brought the other with him) and I am coming across new players all the time. The game is definately worth a sceond look or a first look. If you're burned out on WoW or looking for a game with more depth then LoTR's then maybe Vanguard is that game.
Most of the people who play Vanguard will say "its the best game on the market".
I know a lot of people on this forum disagree strongly but I feel that this statement is so true.
So okay VG is a diamond in the rough, they are polishing right now and it wont be long before this beautiful game really shines.
I believe they are holding back on the 14 day trial til things are sorted out, performances, CTD etc etc.
I urge anyone who likes travel, death penalty, slow levelling, extensive crafting, item centric games to give this a go or another go when the 14 day trial comes out and see the difference.
Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS) Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve
The last I heard was that they were going to try and get a trial out before the end of the year. They are in the middle of a huge update that is addressing a lot of the performance and stability issues. Phase 1 alone fixed a lot of things and phases 2 and 3 are due out within the month.
They're also working on updating the character models to make them look better and at the same time to make them less intensive on the world.
And finally they are currently working on the first dungeon raid content, something called APW.
In the coming months I think this game has a chance to come on strong. Just a matter of Sony handling things the right way. And if not, at the very least I get to what I think is the best game on the market MMO wise until some other options are released next year.
I completely agree that this is the best game on the market right now. I've played every single game on the market with the exception of Fury and came back to VG. Nothing can hold my interest.
