Fury, one of the best solo classes by far.  Necro is ok as well but can't take a hit being only a cloth wearer.

For caster types, Wardens, Furys, Necros & Conjurors appear to be the better choices.

For fighter & DPS the best choices would be Bruiser, Swashbulcker and Berserkers.

All classes can solo though, the above in my opinion do it more effectively than other classes.

A quick breakdown of all the classes for you....

    Fighters

Guardian, Bezerker, Shadowknight, Paladin. All plate wearers, solo extremely well. Guards & Zerkers are the main tanks of the game. SKs have an array of spells to cripple mobs. Pally's heal as well as dish out damage.

Bruiser & Monk. Leather wearers, still solo very well, and get a bad rap cos they lack the plate armor of other fighter classes, but don't let that put you off. They are excellent tankers.

    Scouts

Swashbuckler & Brigand. Excellent soloers, and good stand-in tanks (some raid mobs actually go down better with a swashy tanking!).

Assassin & Ranger. More of a support class both of these, but still able to solo.

Troubadour & Dirge. Commonly known as buffbots ingame. Able to solo but work better in groups due to the nature of they're buffs. Troub's mostly debuff the mobs, Dirge's mostly buff the groups.

    Mages

Conjuror & Necromancer. Excellent soloers. Both these classes have 3 pets. A tank pet, scout pet, and mage pet. Soloing with a tank pet is a one man group, and I have managed to solo extrememly well with both. The Necro has the edge over the Conjy imho, but that's just a personal preference.

Coercer & Illusionist. Solo fairly well. But have the reputation of being 2 of the hardest classes ingame. Coercer's turn mobs into temporary pets, illusionists mesmerise mobs. Both excellent additions to grouping and raids.

Wizard & Warlock. Insane damage from both of these! Able to solo very well, but will die very quickly if it all goes tit's up!

    Healers

Fury & Warden. Great soloers. Fury is the most played healer class ingame. Do outstanding damage for a healer. Wardens not far behind them.

Defiler & Mystic. Good soloers, though both considered quite hard to play due to the nature of they're heals.

Templar & Inquisitor. The plate wearing healers. Templars struggle at soloing, but can take a lot of damage so get there in the end. Inquisitors have the edge over templars as far as damage per second is concerned.

My advice, try anything! If you don't like it try something else!

Currently returned to Norrath after disliking Hyboria.

On a PvE server here are the classes I’d highly recommend for Solo play

Conjuror – pet class, Typically uses a tank pet and acts uses nukes & pet heals.  They have roots, slows that can be used creatively in some situations.

Necromancer – Like a conj but also has the ability to charm undead mobs.  A charmed ^^^ caster pet is awesome in it’s own right. Necro’s also have an ability called lifeburn that allows them to trade their own life for damage at a 4:1 (5:1 ?) ratio.

Warden – Can change all their attacks into melee versions and get 75% crit on melee attacks. This gives them great melee damage without having to spend anything on upgrades.  Can also self buff their mitigation to almost the level of a plate tank while still having the avoidance of a leather armor wearer.  Have their own in-combat power regen, and are one of the best pure healers in the game.

Inquisitor – I haven’t played one but I understand they are very much like a Warden, except they wear plate armor.  IMO their defenses are not as good as a Warden. While they have Plate armor their mit isn’t any better because they don’t have the self buffs a Warden does, and their avoidance is lower because the Warden is in leather.

For a new player Warden are the best of those choices hands down. Get the melee AA skills, and crit chance from the Warden tree as soon as possible, then go for the Str line for double attack, haste, 2 more melee attacks and a heal that procs when you use a melee attack.

For mobs that are just too tough to melee, Wardens also have some of the best roots in the game so they can root&nuke with the best of them if they have some spell upgrades. Aside from invis Wardens can basically do it all.

In additions to being absolute monsters in melee combat they are very cheep to equip.  Rare leather is one of the cheapest rare materials in the game so if you are a tailor you can be in master crafted armor for almost nothing and the most of the important spell upgrades are free because they are Master II choices or are replaced with AA abilities. They don’t have invisibility so expect to spend some money on totems.

Metal is much more expensive then leather so Inquisitors need to spend more on armor then Wardens, and Master I Conj/Necro pet spells are some of the most expensive items in the game.

For PvP servers go with a scout of some type for the stealth, tracking and burst damage. Swashbucklers, Brigands, Assassins, and Rangers all do well.

I have a lvl 52 alt Necro, who I've been solo leveling at a nice clip.

I typically use an Adept III tank pet, and can take solo even con ^^^'s rather easily. What makes it easy for me is going down the 3rd and 4th AA Lines in the summoner AA tree. Bunch of Passive AA's in there that increase pet HPs and skills(defense). Then I took the AA line in the Necro tree (forgot what it's called) that has a master Passive skill that heals your pet 18% for each debuff you cast on your target. It's a free pet heal in relation to the typical Necro heal, which siphons health from you to your pet. And Necro's have like 5 or 6 spells that can be used in this way, and they recycle rather quickly too! Also having the highest spell tier for the pet defensive skill possible (Adept III, M1, or M2) helps too.

Do the melee AA skills just improve the dmg from auto atacks? or does the Warden get some real melee moves as well? I love the idea of a melee druid, but looking at auto atacks only is just... boring.
