I've heard problems with Avast in HG:L. And personally I've had false positives with AVG. So now I"ve ditched that junk and use Nod32 anti-virus and a wireless router as my firewall.
I haven't had any firewall or anti-virus issues at all. Perhaps you need to manually grant HGL access through your firewall to get it to connect properly.

what firewall and virus scan do you use?
None of my internet security has noticed Hellgate. Not Windows, not Mcaffee not Counterspy and not my routers inbuilt firewall.
Try lowering your security settings and rebooting. A lot of firewall softweare stays resident in the memory even when "disabled".
