Will fewer players make "invasions" impossible to overcome?

brihtwulfbrihtwulf Member UncommonPosts: 975

I have yet to play the retail version of the game.  I spent a bit of time in the latter part of closed beta, and while the game was interesting it wasn't enough to make me jump on board at launch.  However, I have been keeping an eye on comments and reviews.  That being said, I noticed a lot of talk about quick respawn times and these "invasions" where the Bane take over player bases (this in turn removes the quest/shop NPCs from the base).  My question/concern is this:

Most games increase in subscribers for the first month or two (though there are of course exceptions like WoW and EVE), and assuming TR follows suit, won't this be a problem?  Most say the bases are difficult to take back, and with less players, won't it be nearly impossible?

There seem to be some games that shoot themselves in the foot with these downward spiral effects (like DDO), making it so that when there are less players, the game becomes a pain.  Then more people quit, and so on...

I have held off from purchasing the game based on both the contradicting reviews and opinions out there, and the fear that this game is going to end up like another Auto Assault.  I enjoyed that game as a diversion, but it was a poor use of my $50.

The game has only been released like a week, I don't think anyone really can tell yet with pops...There aren't any major reviews published yet either....give it a minute

I wouldn't think so... I think 2-5 people are enough to take back a base, besides there'll always be enough players willing to get into the action a bit.

Also small groups of players can group up and run around taking back the bases etc.

Also I highly doubt TR's playerbase will fall, rise more likely.

I hope so...  It would be nice to start seeing some sci-fi titles make it into the scene and survive...  Anarchy Online is just too dated and there aren't enough new concepts out there.

When its time to take back a base you will also get groups of AFS npc's attacking.

One thing I have noticed is you can put a few shots into the force field and a mob will swarm out of the base to attack you. So thats a great way to lure some out.

If you are in a clan I am sure you could get some people to come help take a base.

Its pretty quick to move maps. Just take the nearest portal / dropship back to a major town with a wormhole. Take the wormhole to foreas, dropship back to twin pillars in wilderness then run to the base.

So say 5 minutes to get some people there to attack a base.

Its easily possible to take over a base with no one other than the NPC's assaulting it.  The trick is to be around when a major assault is going on as opposed to just the drop ships of 3-4 troops.   Letting the NPC's soak up the damage while you hang back and take out all targets of opportunity with your rifle will whittle the bane numbers down quickly enough that the ASF forces wont be slaughtered and you'll get quite a sizable army to help you actually cap the base.

dude the beta of a game is not to see if you will like the game it's to test it and find bugs.  Also getting a sneek peak at the game. This is why they give you 30 free days when you first start any mmorpg so you can try the game out an dsee if you like it.

Beta is to find out whats wrong,a nd how to make the game better . Just cause a beta of a game is no good i've never heard of a beta of a game that is cool lots of bugs crashes and bs that makes it no fun but beta isn't made to have massive fun it's made to find bugs.

Beta isn't just for bugs.  Beta is also for gameplay feedback, balance issues, immersiveness ,and load testing.

TR wasn't buggy in beta for me at all....it just lacked any fun or reason to play.

  • I take and defend bases with groups as small as 2 all the time.  The only hard part in small groups is the force field.  As even EMPs only do about 2-5% damage to it.  but it is very easy to defend and take back.

It wasn't supposed to be incredibly fun..we were testing.

And the reason to play? We were testing.

We didn't even get to see the whole game, or all of the features. We were concentrated on certain gameplay aspects for testing purposes.
