Richard promised innovation, alot of us saw/see none. He was almost arrogant in his dev videos. Alot of people were really hoping the master of the insanely fun pre-trammel UO would deliver again.. I heard him talk about how he wanted TR to inspire future MMOs. Of course a few dissapointed people are going to be pissed off and wish ill upon this game and try to keep prospective new players away.. what'd you expect?

Well, as someone who didn't follow the hype at all, I didn't see any of that. I'd probably be pissed too if that's the case.

All I know is that for someone who wasn't caught up in the hype, it's been a blast for several months of beta and now live. If Mr. Garriott set expectations too high and then yanked the table cloth on the delivery, that makes a lot more sense as to why people are so upset.

Still doesn't make the game any less fun though :) And for those who weren't wrapped up in the drama, the game should deliver just fine and might just be well worth the 50 bucks and 50 cents per day...

For me, in comparison to anything else out there at the moment, it's easily worth that.

Well put.  I think I've been viewing TR incorrectly.  While the game doesn't fit my ideal of a MMORPG game, there's probably still a lot of fun to be had killing aliens and leveling up characters.  As long as I'm not looking for it to be a long term experience (like I've done in the past) then I won't be disappointed.

Might have to give this a try just to have some fun until one of the games I'm waiting on (AOC, WAR, AION etc) gets released......

Man... page after page of crap. To the OP... stop worrying about what anyone on this site thinks about anything at all. I've seen these same tools spewing their disdain on every forum on this site. It's not just TR. They're bitter little bitches that have forgotten what it means to play games. If you're having fun, wtf do you care if these idiots don't like it? If you listen to the whining trolls then every game ever made would not be worth playing because one or more of them don't like it. Play what you want and be happy.

Game forums are the fastest way to lose the fun in a game. There have been lots of games that I've enjoyed enough to look into its community. Invariably the forum is full of complaints and people pointing out every damn little flaw they can find. I don't just mean MMOs. So do yourself a favor and make up your own mind about a game's worth. Use forums to find information or get an idea of how a game works. Don't use it to determine if a game is good or bad.

EDIT: Basically, when using game forums, don't ask for nor put any stock in anyone else's opinion (if you're so inclined, that includes mine).

I am praying that by the time Aion releases, NC will have a packaghe deal in the works :)

I would love to play TR, CoH, Lineage II and Aion all at once :)

I'd never have the time to get past level 5 in any of them (playing them all at once I mean), but I'd have all kinds of fun trying :)

Seriously, folks, lets stop the insanity of expecting to influence other people's opinions.  People who are that open-minded are incredibly rare in an atmosphere mostly built of youngins who think they know everything.

There probably needs to be a more tactful way to acknowledge yet dismiss their opinion.  Perhaps a simple, "Well, I respect your opinion, but I liked/disliked the game because..." will do.  Think of it like you're speaking to a flustered teen and you've probably the right attitude.

Personally I feel TR is very innovative in the way of play mechanics. I think its a truly amazing feat they accomplished how with internet lag, they have made line of sight almost work perfectly. you can use your terrain to great advantage. the targeting feature works great.  a nice blend of tactics without the twitch factor. movement, type of weapon/skill your using etc all have effect on damage etc.  The mechanics engine is very revolutionary for an MMO and I think other MMO designers will look at look at TR's combat engine and be like "whoa, how did they do that?".  I know I am truly amazed.  As far as social aspects go, Its easy enough to add a "vacation R&R planet" connect to all the wormholes, and BAM, you have all the social stuff you could ever want. Lots of potential.  Honestly to make a good MMO you have to start with good solid foundation that works, and grow from there.  This world has all the base it needs to grow to be whatever we want it to be.

    I agree 100%.

And personally, I think TR does have unique, innovative game play. I'm so tired of "press attack, stand there spamming specials for 2 minutes until mob dies, repeat".

The only mobs in TR that take a long time to kill are the ones that SHOULD take a while to kill, IE bosses, etc.

Other than that, when I shoot something, it dies. Refreshing.

While I agree on some levels, there are a few I don't. People want somewhere to express their opinion and get a debate going/feedback from others. That is the true purpose of forums, and why a blog is the same. The difference here is that forums have bigger followings than blogs typically...but thats an issue for another life.

I played TR through beta...did well, but it just didn't seem to catch me as an "I would enjoy playing this down the road". Even by level 30 it seemed to just be getting slower and slower. TR does represent some good ideas, such as that range based combat can still work in this day and age, even with melee monsters and the occaisional melee player. They represent a nice change of method for acquiring quests and some new and old implementations of pvp combat., and it was creatively different enough to not appear the same as auto assault.

I do think TR is one of the best MMO's that has come to the market, but none of them have been particularly groundbreaking since wow in the past few years....more of "more of the same". I'm not saying wow is god, I'm just saying nothing has been in that "I reaaaaallllly want to play this/try this" category.

We can thank DirectX 10 for that just as much as anything else, because all directx10 has done is very minimal graphics changes and very high amounts of performance requirements for computing. Maybe when there's a DX11 it will be nice and actually be more efficient, not cause performance to go to garbage. DX10 is the real true reason why games have been crappy lately, in addition to poor development/creativity. Anyone remember DX8 -> DX9? It was great. It did well, it was something we all wanted, it ran better than the previous. Remember DX9-DX10? Things just ran worse, period.  It's like running an emulator to play a windows PC game. Thats where you really should be looking for what the real problem is.

As far as my opinion of the game goes, I pretty much agree. I'm not overly impressed and I don't play the game. My wife does however and she thoroughly enjoys it regardless of my opinion.

While I agree of the purpose of forums to express one's opinion and debate the topic, I'm speaking about game forums and of mmorpg.com forums in particular. People here dislike every single game on the market if you believe most of the opinion posts. They dislike the companies that make the games and anyone that says anything positive about anything is a fanboi or a drooling lemming. You can pretty much post an opinion thread on any game here and will have trolls filling it with hatred.

In my experience, I have enjoyed several games. Then I read forums about that game. It's filled with people pointing out bugs and flaws and demanding this and that be fixed. This game is better than that one. All the shortcomings discussed over and over and over. Then there's the people that don't even play the game or quit the game that think it's their calling in life to bash the game and turn as many people away as possible. Nothing good ever came of reading game opinions in any forum in my experience.

If you find a game you enjoy, don't worry about anyone else's opinion of it or you is all I'm saying. In fact, I'd go as far as saying forget forums even exist. Stick with online resources and official webpages. The main point of any game should be to have fun. Why ruin it by reading about how other people think it sucks?

Thanks for the replies everyone. As you can see by my post count I'm new to posting on MMORPG.com and game forums in general. I mostly created this account a few years ago to take advantage of stuff like free trials and such as well as learn about new games.

    Thanks again.

So far I'm having a great time on this game, it's fast passed and the shooting elements fit in just fine. I like them here as much as I hate the alternative ones from NGE.  My sub is payed for at least 2 more months, so I'm not planing to leave it after the 30 days free.

That is one of the most selfish things I've ever read. 'Terrible' is subjective -- no, don't argue about it. It is.

Like I said earlier; not wanting others to get the chance to enjoy something because you happen not to enjoy it is one of the symptoms of a much larger social disease.

i can only laugh at this, but, maybe if the game developers shot a little higher then we wouldnt have these trash games released that go under in a few short months. only time will tell.

Edit: also, if you want to know about my "social disease" that you seem to know so much about.

NCsoft recently signed a pretty big deal with SoE.

If Tabula Rasa craps out in a few months it is a very good possibility that SoE will buy out NCsoft North America and get rid of the Garriott brothers.

After so many fantasy titles I am happy to have finally come home to a new sci-fi MMO. My first game ever was Anarchy Online, I moved on to WoW from there and enjoyed it greatly -- for a while. But this is my niche.

Why I can't understand is why some people go through such great lengths to slander this game. (And yes, it is slander for the most part) On my crappy setup TR's graphics are ok. At max settings, from what I've seen they're great. Yet some here are saying the graphics are horrible and I don't get it. Older games like AO have comparably horrible graphics. WoW has ok graphics -- TRs are well above that mark.
Same could be said for everyone saying the game is buggy. I've encountered one  (which could be argued actually wasn't) bug which I consider very good if you take into account the game's just been released. I was climbing around places I definitely should not have and got stuck in the terrain. A simple /stuck fixed that.
I don't know what they expected from TR. It is not revolutionary per se; hard to have that these days. But it does  bring back a theme that has largely been ignored in the MMO market. Most the titles out there are fantasy, most of the coming ones are as well. I think it has certain aspects that will garner it with a sizable and loyal playerbase.

Basically this is just me venting at the selfishness of people. I am not asking that you should like the game, just please stop spreading misinformation. As I wrote in a earlier post, most of us posting on this board have an agenda. I make no secret of mine: I want this game to do well because I enjoy playing it and want to be able to play a healthy, evolving MMO in the future. This is a pretty logical thing.
Wanting something to suffer because you do not enjoy it is not  logical! (or nice)

You might check out Q3 reports (just google up NcSoft). Looks like TR preorders were not exactly a shot in the arm. Net income down 21%, even with the successful release of the the new Guild Wars update.

I've never played TR, nor have I said anything good or bad about the game, but I'm guessing this thread is about a fanboi who got upset over someone saying they didn't like the game. How is that wanting the game to fail, exactly? Its just someone's opinion.  Get over fanbois, some people will not like the game you are currently in love with.

Maybe you should actually READ the thread before posting in it.

The TR forum, and really, all of MMORPG's forums, are infested with trolls. There are people who create accounts specifically for trashing a game, and insulting / degrading it's players, or anyone who dares say anything positive about a game. THAT is what this thread is about.

And plenty of people have said they want this game to fail because it's not what they expected or up to their standards and they want to punish the game designers and publishers for not giving them what they want.

If Tabula Rasa craps out in a few months it is a very good possibility that SoE will buy out NCsoft North America and get rid of the Garriott brothers.

Perhaps you could provide a link to back up your wild speculation of a SOE buyout. Even a link to a korean newspaper with an unanmed source would do for this one.
