I'll use WAR since I know more about it then any other upcoming game, you kill other players but you loot off a random loot table vs looting that player. Sure it takes some of the"risk" away, but it also means you don't lose what you played to earn and keeps the "fun" factor there.
Mythic takes away every last bit of "risk" involved and makes death completely meaningles. At least, That's the way it was last time I looked.
Just wanted to point that one out.
That's nice considering they really haven't talked at all about their death system. So your arse can type! Fascinating!
No actually I play Quake 3 and BF2 constantly... I enjoy pounding tanks into submission with my TV guided missles from the attack choppers... I just have the logic to see things as they are..
Because playing quake makes you not a MMO-Carebear? Why do all you people who are afraid of hardcore pvp even prance into these forums? Why don't you go back to your "Sport-PVP" game and continue dying and respawning with no consequences?

Right, I was confused by reading their FAQ.
4.0.4 Player death?
No permanent death
No item loss, corpse runs 100% sure
Death penalty will not be a deterrent for fun, but will be a deterrent for grievers.
Definitely no level loss.
Dumb moves will be punished (Can I kill this dragon alone?)
Experience debts or similar under discussion
"House of the Dead" Pay to "save" yourself.
Death will sting but shouldn't change your play style due to being afraid of it.

First off, that's general stuff, we still don't know how it will all work out.
Secondly.. the game has a purpose to the war fighting, not "well do what you want and here are the risks"
one of the first things i mentioned in myk orginal post was that its not for everyone and the majority dont like it, however there is a market for it. if it is done right you dont really lose anything cause nothing is of great value. its kind of like counterstrike in a way....if you die and lose your wpn, so what, just buy a new one. should there not be wpn drops in counterstrike? of course id hope darkfall went more in depth then a fps.
Thanks OP... Thanks for another post with things that have been brought up and argued over 100 times before. Are you really that bored?? For you to say there is no market for this game is rediculous. Did you play UO, the King of MMOs, back in the day when it was good? Probably not. Thanks again OP, thanks for another useless post.
I didn't say that there was no market, thanks for failing to read! I asked if you really thought there was a big enough market to make it work.
Also UO is a WEAK leg to stand on. There was UO, and EQ and what....?
Whoever brought UO up as a measuring stick of success... UO was launched years ago into a completely different Market. How many UO style games were made since then?? Ok then.. that should tell you enough...
Shadowbane is the only thing closest to Darkfall to gauge possible success by... And it doesn't look too good considering SB is now free to play.. and was also in development for god knows how long.. launched with dated graphics etc... The similarities between the two are actually pretty disturbing when you think about...
I love how people don't understand this game, because they're so wrapped up in such a warm safe stereotype of what an MMORPG should be that they fear change.
Sooo much flak this game recieves every day from people who think they know it all, trying to talk its many fans into thinking the way they do. Why can't they leave it be and just let its supposed failure prove them right? Who knows, maybe they're bored? or perhaps sore about something and just want to dish out some spite. They're definately not curious, because if they were they could just look up what they needed from various sources.
So I'll say the same thing I say in every DF bashing thread:
No one knows the absolute truth about this game, not the fans nor the haters. We've been told things, shown screenshots and videos, as with any other upcoming game out there.
Some believe in it, some ignore it, and some choose to troll. You have to ask yourself which are you, because someone in between would not start a thead like this.
Just please let them put an age rating on this game I fear the kiddies are going to ruin it for everyone. I am under the impression that soon I will no longer play any game without an age limit.
And I would even go so far as to say make it 21+.
And yes I know it wont eliminate every bonehead out there but maybe just maybe it will lower the goon population.

Actually I AM inbetween. I'm a cynical gamer, been burned by too many games that offered what they couldn't deliver, seen great games go away because of bad development, and frankly I believe that as a consumer of MMO's it is perogative to be harsh with MMO companies whose actions raise red flags.
Well FFA looting can work, it all depends on the game, especially how available equipment is and making smithed weapons and armor useful and inexpensive. If they put in fancy weapons that make a big difference in combat then you can kiss FFA looting good bye.
UO survived before Trammel was introduced. Because they had a well designed trade system. Blacksmiths could provide armor and weapons with out gouging the populace. It was not a big deal to lose everything. You just went and reequipped.
As to the feature list, I will laugh at anyone who thinks the game will initially have all those features. Look at the team, somewhere in the neighborhood of 30+ people. That effectually guarentees that many of those features listed on the site will not be in game at release.
I'd say the devs should focus on what is working and get the game out, not on all these silly extra features.
As to the game, well no one has seen a current build, closest anyone has come to the game was shown a year old build, who knows what has changed since then. No publicity or demos at tradeshows either, you have to wonder why they have no marketing team.
It was not a big deal to lose everything. You just went and reequipped.
That is what I asked though. If losing everything isn't a big deal because re-equipping isn't that hard to do, than that has basically the same effect as not even losing equipment. This is what I wanted to know. I played UO back in the day with looting but the rush of taking everyones stuff sort of died because it was easy to re-equip. If you make it that easy to get stuff back, then what is the point of losing at to begin with? Especially if items do not make much or a difference.
I am only going to respond to question 2, because in my opinion, the only valid question.
The reason FFA/Full Loot will work in this game, is because it was designed that way, most that have tried have added it as an after thought, community pressure. DFO is not item centeric, meaning your armor/weapons not going to make you a god and every "decent?" item is going to be player made, so your guild/clan can stock pile arms, so if you get killed and cleaned out, you can etiher go loot in the battlefield or go to your bank and pick out some new duds for me to take from you.

You don't feel that questioning the mechanics of pulling off real time dodging in an MMO with the current laws of physics and the limitations of the internet is a valid question?

No, it really isn't. None of us actually know what the limitations of the internet are. Just because something hasn't been done before doesn't mean it can't be done. It's not a problem for us to question. It is something developers need to look into and take into account. As gamers, we should only concern ourselves with what would be good/fun. The developers are the ones who need to concern themselves with how it works.
I also want to point out that the Full loot system drives the economy. Just like it did in UO. Sure after dying you can just go back and re-equip yourself and head back out but where do you think that spare gear comes from? It has been said that NPCs will only give really shoddy gear and the majority of things in the game will be player crafted. This, combined with the normal wear and tear of items, creates the need for a steady supply of items from these crafters.
This also adds a completely new aspect to war in MMOs. Logistics. Not only do you have to worry about numbers and having an equal or more powerful force than your enemy, but now you have to worry about supplies. Each guild is going to need to have crafters to stockpile arms and armor for war.
This in turn opens up a new tactics during war. Since the guild crafters need materials to create their gear it is now possible to attack and cut off these materials. Just like in UO, the no safezones and FFA pvp allows this. You find out where your enemy's miners and stuff are farming their materials and attack it. Loot the materials for your own crafters and prevent the enemy from getting them. Sooner or later they are going to start running out of equipment to gear their members and start loosing the war.
This of course is all hypothetical. It's up to the Devs to make it work. But full loot opens up a lot more possibilities than you think.
I like how one person mentioned that we don't know anything about the game, and we are speculating about everything. No shit lol. Why even have these forums then? No one knows anything about anything. Remember wish? Wish kind of reminded me of the next UO and it cancelled mid beta. Darkfall may never make it, however I would sure like it to. Am I stupid for supporting the game because it may not make it? It has the POTENTIAL to be a breath of fresh air if it delivers what it says.
Another individual stated that you can't compare UO to darkfall as in popularity because UO was the only thing around. How about this...more than enough reason to compare them because there is nothing around these days like old UO. Anything new will get an influx of players. Alot of gamers have never even had the chance to have the experience of a UO style game. 1997 some people were still in gradeschool, and may be coming of a more appropriate gaming age in 2007. Ill tell you this too....there are tens of thousands of players that still play UO after 10 years. That is not bad for a 10yr old game considering the strides in technology and gaming and MMOs. Part of that is due the weird syndrome of people never wanting to leave their first MMO, but its impressive that so many people still cherish UO to this day. Darkfall developers have mentioned several times that alot of DF features were inspired by UO.
If you dont like full loot, and don't want to try it then you are lucky....cause you have 100 times more options than us, who do like it. So you have no need to fear our type cuase we surely wont be invading your games
It has the POTENTIAL to be a breath of fresh air if it delivers what it says.
Darkfall is not new and it's not a breath of fresh air. It's a 6 year old project built on old , outdated , first generation ideas.
Everything sounds good on paper. That's all Darkfall is. A bunch of good ideas mashed together on paper. I gurantee you without a doubt that darkfall will *NEVER* play as good as it sounds...
It has the POTENTIAL to be a breath of fresh air if it delivers what it says.

It's a skill-based, full-pvp game. That in itself is not new of course, but has long been missing from the MMO scene. On that basis alone i believe it does have great potential. . . if it ever actually releases.
I really hope either A) darkfall is released or they tell us its never gonna happen because I'm really sick of yall bickering on the playground about the same BS. They should make a seperate forum for this debate.. because it's really annoying coming onto the forums to find info about the game and see nothing but you lunatics arguing over things that either dont make sense or are completely hypothetical.
To answer the OPs "questions"
1. Why is it so hard to imagine why people would follow this game? It's a cool concept. Plain and simple. What they are trying to do is truly next gen. Nothing like this has been attempted. It is not a cookie cutter MMO that many have become accustomed to. Cmon let a man dream. If Darkfall flops, there will be another company that will try to make a game like this. It's the natural progression of things. Whether it be one year from now and 10 years from now, the age of DF type MMOs is coming.
2. ah the FFA loot system. This is great. You have to realize DF will not be a game where you must spend hours upon hours to achieve a uber axe of mightyness just to be competitive. Equipment will be easy to get and inexpensive. If you die and your shit gets looted, damn that sucks but you will easily be able to replace it. This system will help the in game economy too. If you suck and always die you better know a good crafter to get some more goods from. Or make a crafter yourself. Again, you've obvisouly never played or know anything about UO because if you did this concept wouldnt be so hard to understand.
3. Real Time dodging. Hey we landed on the moon too FYI. Have you ever played a FPS online before? Guess not. I was playing COD4 last nigh with people from the UK and I live in Jersey. No lag. Yea, I know your gonna say "yea but that's a small little map with a fraction of the people that will play on a MMO". You are right. Technology advances everyday. If you tried to tell people about the internet 20 years ago they would have laughed in your face and now look what we do with it.
It's a skill-based, full-pvp game. That in itself is not new of course, but has long been missing from the MMO scene.
Their version of the words "skill-based" actually DO mean "level-based". Do people not see this? Yes, more skill is needed than your run of the mill mmo, I agree. But, it still has a level system with your skills. Skills cap at 100 and go up and down depending on how often you use them. You would be a fool to believe that somebody with 100 fireball skill is equal to somebody with 60 fireball skill. That is 40 LEVELS of difference, thus it still is level-based.
Also, what do you mean by full-pvp game? If by full loot, you are correct but if you mean there is no PVE you are incorrect.

Full pvp = unrestricted pvp. No restrictions at all on who, when, where or why.
Wtf was the point of the first paragraph? You just stated the definition of skill-based MMORPGs and then said it's really level based...it really isn't. So Ultima Online is a level based game? Eve Online is a level based game? If you think someone will win just because their skills are higher then are you in for a surprise. It wasn't the case in UO and Eve and won't be the case in this game either.
