I really hope so, because 2007 has been a huge disappointment. I'm looking forward to POTBS, AOC, and WAR. If those three come out next year, and they're finished, this genre might just be looking up for me. If a great new MMO doesn't come out soon, I'm going to loose it -- and I don't even know what "it" is!

Hehe I hate to be negative but
2008 = Attack of the Clones Part Duex
Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!
2008 will be the year of the MMO, as well of the MMORTS as the MMORPG. However too much MMORPG's will be launched at the same time... However I'm still hoping to hear from the release date of GW2 and Aion, both have some very good concepts, but will probably be Q1-Q2 2009. And Darkfall, which will be around 2010 probably .
2008 will be the year of the big escape of the WoW-fanboy, I already know a lot of people will quit WoW for WAR.

2007 was meant to be the year of the mmorpg but it ended up sucking and 2008 looks no better because it's all the same crap. 2003 has to be the year of the mmorpg because Planetside, Horizons, Star Wars Galaxies and Eve Online, though all of them apart from EVE were ruined.
2005, 2006, 2007, now it's 2008s turn.
I have my heart set on 2010 being the year of the MMO
right now its just year 2 of the WOW clone. 2-3 more years of that before something original sneaks into production.
Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.
I hope that 2008 is the year, because the last few have been THE SUCK!!!!
I have some hope for AOC but i am not counting on it.
When does the game R.A. Salvatore is helping make come out 2009/2010?
It's all about AoC, AOC!
2010 being the year of the MMO? The games which could be released in 2010 didn't announce their release date yet. So the only thing we're sure of are the MMORPG's which already announced their release date. 2008 might be the year of the MMO, but 2009 and 2010 are still open endings.

December 31st, 2012 the best and greatest mmorpg ever designed will make its debut. Millions will be overjoyed!!
Then.........BOOOMM!!!!
So say the prophecies.
There won't be any groundbreaking MMO's for a while. Vanguard failed, AoC and WAR may be interesting but I don't believe either will be that innovative or groundbreaking. MMOs probably won't get a good shot in the arm for some time, the next big ones are years away.
AS for WAR i think it will do great and it will reach the 1mil subs. probly even 3 or 4.
Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.

I think we've seen all that mmos have to offer for a very...very...long time.
The only innovation that I can see coming out would be a VR, .hack-ish game. That would be a good change of pace for me, but even then it would most likely end up the same as the rest.
Yea, I'd agree here. We're gonna see several MMO launches in 2008 and at least a couple big ones, but nothing new or revolutionary. It's all speculation at this point, but the next batch (2009-2012) has more potential for something innovative.
Some big launches coming up but like everyone has said, nothing new. PotBS, WAR, and AoC are all looking like slight variations on the same rehashed ideas. On paper, Darkfall looks the most promising but is a wildcard because of release uncertainty.
why should a mmorpg be "innovative" ? wow wasnt, L2 wasnt and they are by far the buggest succees of the last 3 years. and this using concepts used for a decade.
there is a a few very very promising mmorpg comming in 2008.. actually more ( and i mean REEAL games not unfisnished freebie L2/WOW clones) than the last 3 years
AoC (promising though its FUNCOM... FUNCOM has fgood ideas as they prooved with AO really revolutionnary in hes time but lack coding talent )
WARHAMMER : very promising, plus the huge warhamer licence will gather lot of pplayers if its half good as what people exepct.
POTBS : havent followed it since i dont liek the concept by itself.. so cant say much
AION : ( 1 quareter 2008) probably the one that gona surprise the more, i m anticipating this one the most (though i ll try aoc and warhammer too to make sure i make the good choice )
ANd those are major production from talented and exeprienced developpers that already have been succefful in the mmorpg market. Not some unknown company trying to jump on the WoW / L2 bandwaggon.
IF you guys sais 2008 wont eb different than the last 3 years then you havent been following the mmorpg at all
All I ask for in 2008 is just one new game...one, that is properly released and I enjoy playing.....
such a simple thing..... so long in coming...
(though I did get the time to play EVE, which was a good thing)

Doesn't seem like thats asking too much does it? I feel the same way right now. Could care less what the hell the genre does as long as theres just ONE game that appeals to me. Thats all we need, one polished, sandbox style MMO and the "bitching and moaning" factor will decrease exponentially...
2008 should be pretty big. Of course WAR and AoC are the big hitters. There will also be some medium level subscription MMOs released in '08 to further make an impact on MMOs. 2007 was supposed to be pretty big, however, and like you said, it was a disappointment. VSoH totally flopped on release and probably should of moved back to 08. LOTRO is an immature WoW clone. And TR appears to be more like Guild Wars than an MMORPG. Though these were all some big names and will definatly have a decent subscription base.
I imagine WAR will be bigger in subs than any of them. I think AoC will not be quite as big in subs, but IMO may be a better MMORPG. Only time will tell what 08 will bring us, but I try not to get my hopes up too high since I was let down pretty hard by VSoH and the rest of 07's poor games.
