hi there,
so after 2+ years of wow playing, i got sick of it and quitted. maybe ill check it out again when the next exp is released. meanwhile, id like to get my hands on another mmorpg, but i have a few demands:
- for me wow was pretty good, quests system, crafting system and the pvp. i live for pvp, so a game without pvp its not even worth opening its website.
- ive checked lots of games websites, and youtube movies, and it seems that the ones more close to wow are eq2 and vg.
- actually vg seems pretty good, but im kind affraid that it doesnt have enough pvp, im one of those guys when reaches the lvl cap in a mmorpg, the only thing to do is the casual group instance, and pvp and thats it.
btw, i searched the site and couldnt find it but, is there any kind of trial for this game? i would really like to try it out.

Please, if you enjoyed WoW stay out of VG. If you enjoyed PVP, crafting and quest system in WoW, then you will hate VG. VG takes much difficult approach to everything. Crafting is another minigame that can take months to master, quests doesn't lead you by your hand (only first 10 levels) and PVP is not for carebears. If you managed to stay in WoW for so long, ..I'd rather play alone than with ex-wow players.

"Please, if you enjoyed WoW stay out of VG"
a "and the reason being" would be nice, i now only have 50% respect for you.
"PVP is not for carebears"
yeah i imagine that pvp in VG is serious business!

thanks for the reply, but it was NOT helpful, and sounded like what a 12 year old fanboy would answer.
if anyone else could help, i would appretiate. and btw, is there a website that lists quests, items, mobs, spells, etc?
Ignore Thillian, he played WoW to all the way to the end raids and still hates it, one wonders why!?!
There are other PvP specific games out there, Fury, and Guild Wars.
But they are not proper MMOs like Vanguard is.
Things to note about Vangaurd are that the pop is a bit low at the moment, but that will improve when it is re-launched and it is quite graphic intensive.
It is a 3rd Generation MMO so is a step up from WoW and most other MMOs out at the moment, how much PvP is in there at the moment i dont know, maybe an active player can tell us more.

LOL Thillian is an Ex-Wow himself and is definitley a VS fanboy, i think he actually has shares in the game!
You see, you are a perfect example of ex-wow player. You want a game that is a walk in the park. Playing in minimized mode or at least alt-tabbing every 10 seconds to see the exact location of every quest, like you did with Thottbot. You are not interested in depth gameplay, nor exploration, now finding out things by yourself. You rather has a long guide for everything with a fat describtion and explanation for everything.

making assumptions about what others want makes you look like an idiot, and if you dont have anything useful to add, just dont reply. i understand that you're one of those typical fanboys, and fanboys suck wether theyre from wow or any other game. and if you find VG so superior, why dont you point out why? especially since you came from wow, that would help.
vultureskull: thanks for the reply. ive tried both GW and fury, and found both a bit lacking (i dont want just pvp) and their animations sucked. what i liked from the movies i saw about VG were the animations, they seemed smooth and nice, not like GW where it looks like youre controlling a robot.
ps: the edit box from this forum is kinda weird lol.

I don't find VG superior. I'm playing it for only a couple of hours per week. But it's still one of the best games on market at the moment for a minority of the players. I pointed out a few major aspects of the game here: http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/150145I am not really an ex-wow player. I played it for a couple of months and left, just like almost every other MMORPG. I have to say WoW was the biggest waste of time. I found every feature of it copied from AC2. It's my opinion, it's not a fact.
To the second part, animations are actaully the weakest point of the VG visuals. You really notice that when you start playing. For me it doesnt matter much, but there are people that care about that.
REALITY CHECK
There are loads of people like you looking for something new, me included.
I tired LOTOR and it doesnt do it for me. The only other games are EQ2 and VS, that have the depth or more depth than WoW.
EQ2 has PvP and is a pretty good game. The last itme tired it i found it hard to find a party for PVE quests.
Ultimately i went back to WoW and rolled a new char.
Normally Thillian is very good at prompting VS, please let us know what the pvp is like or what the plans are for it in VS.
There seems that there are dedicated PvP servers, much like EQ2, the pop on the VS pvp servers doesnt seem high, from what i have read on these forums
I don't know much about PvP in VG. I don't play on PVP server and i don't intent to. From the opinions of people that play there it's harsh to play there. The classes are really not balanced for pvp nor 1v1 fights, and they will never balance the game for it. It's a PvE game.
OP you really should consider different game. Look I want VG to grow and hit at least 100k subscribers, but I won't lie to you. You enjoyed WoW, and it's a big chance you will be disappointed with VG to such extent you will come to this forums smash it to pieces. Most of the quests don't have any guides on internet, and you will be searching for what to do. You will be exploring that huge landmass, and there are tons of things that needs to be learned. How to add powders during crafting, what kind of parts a normal leggings do, where are the quest givers for next tiers, where is the next quest hub town for your level etc etc.
The game doesnt lead you by hand as WoW does. It requires to be doing plenty of research, and searching for things.
REALITY CHECK
If your looking for excellent PvP Fury has just come out. The game is all PvP and literally no PvE, now if what your saying is true you may love this game. On the other hand it takes some skill to be good.
I think they're still planning to do a "trial island" kind of thing when they're done remodeling the character models and such. I'm definitely going to go back and try it. I played WoW for about 3 months but got bored of it. I really enjoyed VG during beta and when it launched, even though it had many flaws, largely performance related. But that should be clearing up. I've heard that the performance has already increased noticeably, and when the models are redone that will be a huge bit. Plus they remodeled one of the cities, Khal, or are doing so, to make it less laggy etc, but it also looks better. It was fun when i played it though, so keep your eyes open for the trial.
If you have a strong computer, then performance is not an issue.
512MB cards, 2gb ram and some dual core is considered strong. With 8800gtx and 4gb you can run 50-60 FPS and around 30 FPS in cities. There is still one bug that is obviously hard to fix that occurs sometimes, that makes you fall throught ground. That happens only when you are jumping from a cliff and fall to ground in some strange angle. So try to avoid jumping from too high cliffs (as you should do in real life as well ;p).
I wouldn't bother to play this game with 1gb ram or some 6x series Nvidia.
The trial island will be out within 1-3 months.
REALITY CHECK
I'd give it a shot if i were you, i think you can download the game for 10$ somewhere.
I quit wow and played VG for early beta and a few months after release getting up to 46. Quit the game while it was still under Sigil and absolutely horrible. Getting up to 46 was mind-boggling our static had to have spent hours just looking for a place to level. And any gear past level 35 was non-exsistant.
Though I still really enjoyed the combat system and completely in-depth crafting / diplomacy systems. As well as how they all tie together.
I recently got back into the game, and it's changed quite a bit. The new development team, even though they are SOE. Are pretty damn good, much of the memory leak problems have been fixed. It runs a lot smoother in places where it used to be unplayable. And there is actually content past level 35 now.
The learning curve for this game is extremely high. I had to spend a day with my character learning why I wrote the macros I did and how to use them. Nothing is right out given to you, you do have to work for it.
IE reading the quests, listening to the NPC's etc. For anyone who replys here and did used to play, it is now a lot easier to level (rest xp and more xp per quest / mob). The brotherhood and caravan systems do actually work and are quite awesome.
Brotherhood - share xp with a group of people, you log off you still get xp
Caravan - share location with a group of people, you log off you get moved with the group
PvP is brutal, be prepared to be camped, ganked, killed while fighting mobs etc... Just let it roll off you and move on. Cause after all you can do the same thing back to said person in time.
All in all i'd give it a chance, the new devs seem to be working really hard to salvage this and doing quite a good job so far.
Firstly, there is no trial atm, though it is in the works.
I only played the game for PVP, as that's all that interests me - PVE bores me to tears.
Secondly, the PVP in VG is completely different than WOW. There is one PVP server in VG named Sartok, and it is is FFA - basically it means everyone can attack anybody as long as they are above level 6. There are no instanced PVP arena's, battlegrounds etc as it is all world PVP. There are no realms either, and the only sides are formed by players eg guild vs guild.
In terms of PVP risk/reward, there is very little. If you kill someone with your level range (10%?) you get a certain amount of their carried coin (15%?) and 10% of their infamy (which means nothing at this point bar bragging rights).
I've never been griefed, or altar camped, and IMO as long as you play smart I don't see how you could - especially now that you can release to bind/altar on PVP death.
In terms of population, I'm not to sure as I quit shortly after server merges though at that time the population was great, and finding fights was easier enough.
There is not much balances in terms of 1v1 PVP, but in groups it is a much different story. Unfortunately there is also quite a bit of hacking that goes on (not only on the PVP server mind you), so keep your dot spells ready to counter that :P
Anyway, I guess it really depends on your playstyle. I have always enjoyed FFA much more than RVR. I have always enjoyed world PVP over instanced bg's. In summary even with all it's bugs/problems I enjoyed VG's PVP much more than WOW's item/zerg fest/instanced PVP, but neither of them come close to AC1/UO.
thanks a lot for the replies guys, it really gave me a nice reading about the game features, especially the features i was interested in (pvp and others wow look a like features).
btw osc8r: since you're a pvp addict like me what do you play now (if anything) if you dont mind me asking?
Eve online may be worth a look as the PVP there is great - if you have patience and like space, and I did enjoy Vanguard's PVP. Atm I'm just trying to find things to tide my over until AOC/WAR or Darkfall. Hopefully one of them will offer the rewarding and meaningul PVP we have been craving.
Good luck!
