When you don't subscribe the only game mode you do not get is Hardcore mode. You still get normal and elite. So you can not create a character who can not die, that is the only game mode you are restricted from.
People keep putting out that you can only play in Normal mode which is a LIE!
Currently playing:
LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)

Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)

The character seleccion screen states it clearly:Elite mode,subscription needed and normal mode finished(using the MP client 1.4 ...i think its 1.4)
So....all this mess is a bug in a text description?
They decided to remove the elite mode from the subscription list.
Hell i'm more than happy since they did that i see fss trying hard to keep everyone happy yet they have a few mistakes but nothings perfect and nothing will ever ever be "perfect" in my opinion in a few months this game will be top dog will never be number 1 but it will def be in the top 15
