Call of Duty 4: Wow

I was greatly looking forward to COD4 as the next big shooter since Rainbow 6:Vegas. The Halo type shooters don't do it for me and neither did Gears of War. Usually I don't care for the Call of Duty shooters since the Battlefields came out, but I am now going on 3 years without a gaming computer and have had to adapt the way I game to what works well on a console. Vehicles, especially flying ones, just don't work well with consoles.

Anyway, I am never one to pre-order a game or even make an attempt to buy it on the first day, but I was looking forward to COD4 so much that I went out early on my day off yesterday to get it, and I even drove the 20+ miles round trip with a sprained or twisted ankle in constant pain. Unfortunately they didn't have the copies in yet for the public but were going to have them later. I made the trip again yesterday night, with an ever worse off ankle, to actually get a copy.

Unfortunately I couldn't get to it until this morning, but being that today is the second of my 2 days off I figured I would have plenty of time to play it. I skipped the Single Player for now, though I usually like to start off with Single Player to learn the ropes, and dove right into the Multi-player. I have to say, even though I was looking forward to this game I was skeptical that it would live up to my expectations. Almost no game ever lives up to my expectations. COD4 is really the first one to do so in a long long time, and it even surpassed them. Ever since I started playing 360 games online I have run into constant annoying issues that did not come up so often on the PC. Getting into a game is almost always a bitch, there is always a lag issue in at least 1 of 4 games I can get into, and once you make it to a lobby you have to wait for the damn 12 year old hosting to finish his very casual conversation before he'll launch the damn thing. In the meantime you and 10-19 other people have to put everything on hold to wait for the little shit and if you say something to him it results in a kick and a lot of pre-teen giggling.

The great thing about COD4 is there is almost 0 waiting. You choose a game type(Free for All or Teams, as well as many many many other game-types you unlock as you play). It then takes 10-20 seconds and you find yourself immediately in a room full of players. The game then automatically starts to countdown until launch without leaving it up to the asshole hosting. After a round finishes it does the same exact thing with a 30 second intermission or so and then the game launches. The game also auto-balances teams and there is no damn ready or switch-team button. However you can choose to team-up with a friends and the game automatically assigns you to the same team. Also, if no games are in the "lobby" you launch right into whichever one started most recently. I hated with Rainbow 6 having find games that were near the end of the timer because if you chose one currently in "Lobby" it would most likely launch before you could finally load in, then you had to disc and start all over.

I played with at least 10-15 different hosts this morning and the results were exactly the same. What was also exactly the same was the lack of any lag what-so-ever. I never ever saw a single freeze-frame or skip the entire time I played. The really amazing part of this is that the graphics are the absolute best of any online shooter I have ever played, and probably of any game I have ever played. The environments are detailed as hell but you can still see what you are shooting at, while at the same time you can really hide yourself if you want to do some sniping.

I played for 6 hours straight and only stopped because I forced myself to. I have never ever had so much fun gaming, or at least not since UO and BF:1942:DC.

The amount of unlockables is amazing with 2 different challenges for each weapon(such as "Kill 100 enemies with this weapon"), and this is not type of weapon but each actual weapon. Knifing has always been the bitch-slapping of FPS games but in COD4 it is 3X more fun with the viciousness of the swipe.

I kind of ran out of steam here and I know the review thus far is only positive which doesn't really balance the review very well. I guess if I had to say something negative I would point out that a handful of the many many maps(over 12 I believe) make sniping almost impossible, and on these you really just have to pull out a machine gun of some sort. Also I only lasted a few minutes on one of the unlockable game-types which I can't remember the name of, but it raised the player count from 12 to 18. There were just way too many players on the screen, but at the time I was still working toward a sniping challenge and so maybe an assault type class would be better there.

Anyway, if you were doubtful because you never really enjoyed the other Call of Dutys, I strongly recommend you give this one a shot. Also, if like me you enjoy the more tactical shooters, this game is not Rainbow 6 but is much more along this line than Gears of War or Halo or Team Fortress. Actually, I would say the gameplay is very very similar to BF2 minus the vehicles. You can still launch bombings or helicopter strikes with 5 and 7-kill Combos though.

I found it to be boring with dumb AI and too heavily scripted, feels way too much like COD2, way bored of the gameplay.

Its common sense the gameplay and multiplayer are the key points of todays FPS, not its single player and storyline. So it really shouldnt be used as a knock against the game. I traditionally dont like FPS, but im very interested in this "rank and reward" system they have for the PvP multiplayer.

Yea i really liked the way it was nothing at all like Call of Duty 1,2 or 3.

And the historical accuracy was great.

Cant wait for the next one set in Vietnam with the death gliders and para Cyborgs.

I bought COD:4MW, I wanted to like it because I play mainly FPS. I'm just going to say that I am not impressed with the multiplayer, Sabotage is decent.. but at the same time, the gameplay is horrendous. I personally think it would be fine for Xbox360 live. But for the PC, I'll stick with playing Team Fortress 2/Battlefield series.

There are several reasons I don't like it, and few things I do like it.

For the PC this is the score I'd give it.

      Graphics - 7

      Sound - 8

      Gameplay (singleplayer) - 7

      Gameplay (multiplayer) - 2

I regret paying 50$ for it, just because I am an avid multiplayer PC FPS lover, and it is a complete failure to me at that. I would only recommend this piece of shit to somebody that I hate so they could waste 50$ too.(PC version).

By the way - the game has instant prone.. so haha!! Use it and be untouchable. Not many people are utilizing it at the moment, but when I was playing I was exploiting it and got 15/2 K/D with various machine guns, the first night I bought the game.

Seriously this is the worst FPS I've played all year. I wanted to like it, being a big Call of Duty/Call of Duty 2 fan. I just hope this doesn't catch on for PC FPS's.

And would you knock Bioshock for being unrealistic, saying there was no such city in 1960?

If you want realisme play Armed Assault(Great game)

oh and BTW, FUCK CoD4 IS AWESOME! I simply love the multiplayer.

Also, there ISN'T instant prone. I don't know what that guy was talking about, but it takes a moment to go to prone.

You have to expect that no matter how good you think a game is, a lot of people just won't care for it. That is why I tried to provide a list of similar FPS games that I found enjoyable in Multiplayer and those I did not. As for the single player game, I have not tried it yet, but I assume it will be enjoyable though I can't vouch for it yet.

i dont know if its cause I played the other 3 COD, but im just not excited about this.  Much more looking forward to Crysis

It doesn't feel like the other COD to me. After playing BF:1942 I never really liked the COD Series. Everything just seemed too damn restrictive. Tiny maps, limited movement, and the lack of vehicles(Until the Tank and Jeep in 3) seemed like a step backward compare to BF:1942. This one seems to have made a leap forward. The Maps are giant(Not Gazala Giant, or BF2 Giant, but compared to a lot of FPS Games they are), also I feel like there is a lot more movement allowed in everything from jumping to climbing to running.
