What is truely unique about each MMO?

I can't speak for all, but most of the MMOs I've had the privilege of playing have had some exclusive quality or feature that can't be found in the others. People often use words now like 'clone' and 'rip-off' when describing games, but I think that's rubbish.. every game is unique in its own way, even if the UI or quests or whatever is similar to another.

EVE online - the first MMO to let all clients connect to the same server and play in the same persistent universe.

Final Fantasy XI - the first MMO to let players from multiple gaming platforms to connect to the same servers and play at the same time. First FF on multiplayer.

Lord of the Rings Online - the first MMO to let players play as monsters

anyway correct me if that's wrong.. but what do you think? what makes your game really stand out from the others?

Waiting for Fallen Earth, World of Darkness, Old Republic, FFXIV

For me it's not single or a few features what make mmorpgs different from others. It's entirely gameplay and all what's in the mmorpg. Just because some mmorpgs has some unique feature(s), doesn't really make the mmorpg really different from other mmorpgs.

How ever that is depending a lot of everyone personal view points. Some may say that one small difference make it all different, but some other players sees one same feature and feels like it's same old same. It's just opinion and view point, there is no correct line to draw where the limit is.

Lord of the Rings Online - the first MMO to let players play as monsters
    Preceded by Everquest.

Unique about FFXI I think is its chains if I'm right, well not unique as EQ2 copied it but it was the first to do it.

    DAoC, first to do battlegrounds.

    AO- first to do instances?

    First seamless world- AC2?

First mmo to implement raiding(sadly)- Everquest.

  • StaatsschutzStaatsschutz Member Posts: 90

first on instances was probably everquest (lost dungeons of norrath)

  • SramotaSramota Member Posts: 756

    The was Unique, not 'first'...

WoW sure takes the price as being unique in the sense of being the only MMO that ruined more lives than Hitler...

Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW...
    It all sucked.

Asheron's Call 1 - Only MMO that I know of that allows you to dodge projectiles such as Arrows, bolts, and spell attacks.  It also didn't make use of instances and instead had a seemless world.

    Currently playing:
LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)

    Looking Foward too:
Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)

SWG - the only MMO to ever be totally revamped after launch

The Name, in all honestly when it comes to MMORPGs the Name of the game is truly the only unique thing that makes them stand apart.

"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."

I think Asheron's Call was the first to do instances. I don't think LOTRO has any claim to fame, really, except most blurred backgrounds.

Yeah, some games have a hook. Still, it's pretty pathetic if your only way to distinguish one game from another is a different looking interface.

Actually I believe it was Funcom's Anarchy Online that invented the instance, but I could be wrong.

Asheron's Call didn't use Instances.  Everquest 1 was more instanced since it had zones.  AC1 was seemless.

What about Motor City Online?  First (and only) to incorporate racing to MMORPG...

Loved that game and played til the last day... :(

DDO allows you to dodge projectiles and spells as well. I tried Vanguard and LOTRO for a bit but the combat in DDO spoiled me and I couldn't stick with them .

AC1 had loading screens to enter some dungeons (i.e. 'portals', but the world was otherwise seemless), however I don't think you can classify the dungeons in AC1 as instances because no mirroring of them for separate groups took place.

    Star Wars Galaxies

First(I think) to incorporate an array of non-combat/non-crafting professions - Musicians & Dancers

Had an extremely deep crafting system & economy that was, for a while, entirely based on player made items.

First game to have the ability to pilot spacecrafts PLUS walk around inside them mid-flight, invite friends onboard, all that fun stuff

Had the most expensive ebay characters? I remember over $1800+ for Jedi

Correct me if it has changed since beta but in DDO you can dodge the projectiles and spells but it still "roles" to see if you succeeded.  So if you don't have enough dodge skill you will still get hit.

While in AC1 it was twitch based and only your RL skill of actually being able to dodge mattered.

But you don't dodge it if you don't twitch the key to dodge. :)

ID say WoW and not just for its huge fanbase or playerbase, in WOW it felt like i was really my character, it was such a epic feeling when a massive horde gathering would happen in the barrens and we would all march all the way to astrannar to go to war with the alliance, and the skirmishes that would occur along the way to astrannar and massive wars that took 3 days or more. Every level, every class every race would get involved. It proved why WoW was one of the best mmorpgs ever.

Sometimes its not a distinct feature but the overall feel of the game for me.  EVE Online for example has a very grown up, cold, hard feel to it that encourages a certain type of player and thus the large corporations are ran like real business's.  What does frustrate me is seeing a game that I do not particularly like but it has a unique feature that would be outstanding in another title.   For example I loved the idea of Diplomacy in Vanguard and even though I played it for a good few months I found the game slightly void of 'soul'.   Hard to put my finger on why that was...

That wasant the question tho the question was to name a unique feature of each MMO.

For mine it has to be the single server, single shard Universe of EvE.

In the last year, the only unique mmos I saw released were Vanguard for its open world, and Granado Espada's multi-character control and advanced AI.
