Something similar to FFXI?

SrCardgageSrCardgage Member Posts: 2

Hi folks,

I played FFXI for about two years, leaving it three years ago to concentrate on school. Now I'm back in the market for a new MMORPG, but my FFXI account no longer exists. I really enjoyed FFXI, but I can't imagine starting all over again.

I also played Scions of Fate for a few weeks about 8 months ago, but left that after my account was hacked and I had my gold and most of my items stolen. I liked SoF as well though, but not to the same extent.

I'm looking for something similar to these games. I really liked the character customization and job types of FFXI (heck, I liked most things about it). What I didn't like was that soloing was impossible, or that it was nearly impossible to obtain any good equipment at the end of the game.

I guess what I'm looking for is a game similar in form and function to FFXI, but with the potential for solo exp that was present in SoF and less time required (to do anything in FF, I needed to play minimally three hours at a time -- more at the end of the game when camping HNM's is a big part of things). I just don't have that kind of spare time anymore.

Thanks in advance for any responses!

in case you havent tried yet, go for world of warcraft. a free trial of 10 days is available, and i think you will really like it. you can pretty much do everything you did on ffxi and more (and better).

wow shines a lot right there, you can get very good gear solo (ofc you can get even better on a guild).

wow can get get as casual or as hardcore as you want, and still enjoy it a lot. give it a try.

Yeah wow can def be played casually, but anything beyond reaching level cap is unreachable for casual players. Even gearing up through the  easy 5 mans would take a long time if done casual and that gear is less than stellar. You slowly, but surely can get pvp gear through battle grounds and arenas, but for most classes the pvp gear is a bit weak for anything other than pvp and you would need to find a reliable arena team. If you are indeed a casual player, just reaching level cap can be done solo and take you a fair amount of time.  The game is fun and I played it for a long time and raided quite a bit, but once you get over the "omg I gotta have those boots" phase there really isnt much the game offers. Atlhough what it does offer is very well done.

After rereading your post I would say look for something other than Wow...if You are looking for a game like FFXI you may or may not like Wow, but they are not very similar. I would suggest  waiting for one of the games coming out in 08 like Aion (which I think would be the closest to what you are lookng for), or Age of Conan etc...

I played FFXI also and had lost my account, but just in case you didn't know they have Welcome Home to Vana'diel events pretty regularly now where you can renew old lost characters.  As long as you didn't sell your account of something you can get it back.  Check the main site for details..  I know they are releasing an expansion soon with the Scholar and Dancer class and are having a Welcome Home event around that time.

**I don't know if there is anything you have to do.. I logged back into the game and my character was just back after it had been gone for some time.  I think you may have to apply though if this doesn't happen.

I got my character back from one of these events and it has been a blast...  I don't play regularly but I play for a month or two then cancel the fee and always go back every few months.  This is one of the best MMO's ever for me and i'm really looking forward to the new Square Enix mmo in the works.

Like the others said though I would go with WoW.  For help starting WoW this late go to warcraftrealms.com, us servers, sort by date, and pick one of the servers released latest which I think is January of 07.  I have a character on the RP-PVP server Ravenholdt and I generally stick to the RP-PVP servers for some hope that there will be at least a few more mature players that don't write Pwn in every sentence.  These servers have more people not at level 70 yet so the world will feel alive.  If you get hooked then try the expansions..  There is plenty of content to get you until the next good MMO.

Although try FFXI again when you can.  The servers are still as populated as ever, and they add amazing content pretty constantly.  Best end game mmo ever.

Oh, that's cool. I didn't know they were still adding new WoW servers. One of the things that was holding me back from trying WoW was not wanting to be a newb when everyone else was already max level. I might check it out now.

As for FFXI, I was really kinda sick of it when I left. I have to disagree with you about it being the best end game MMO ever, because while there is no doubt a lot to do at the end of the game, most of it was just stressful and/or boring to me. But if you're still enjoying it, that's cool too.

Big thanks to the people who replied. I'm going to try out WoW and maybe look more into WAR when it comes out. If anyone else has an MMO that they really like, feel free to post about it -- I'll keep checking in.
