Age of Conan Class Interview #1: The Dark Templar < link

On TenTonHammer!

Answers by Jørgen Tharaldsen, Product Director for Funcom

"Ten Ton Hammer: When it comes to worshiping particular gods, it sounds like the Dark Templar really doesn't care what sort of demon being he makes his pact with. Will player controlled Dark Templars be able to choose a god that they make their demonic pact with? If not, how does the Dark Templar stand out in the darker Conan storyline compared to the classes that worship Set or any other vile god?

Jørgen: That is entirely correct, a Dark Templar is not bowing to any one god or demon, but to the ones who at any given time can give him the best (or worst *winks*) beneficial powers. We have not made direct god encounters a part of the gameplay when it comes to worshiping though, so don’t expect, for instance, that a “Monty Python-like” hand of god will come down. A lot is therefore explained through other aspects than pure encounters. This is done on purpose; making such encounters worthy enough would be tricky to pull off for each individual class.

When it comes to the role of the Dark Templar in the bigger storyline of Hyboria, it is a great archetype from lore and one we’ve worked hard on so players can enjoy the role of a sorcerous warlord from the Hyborian age. This class seeks to carve out their own kingdom, lead their own armies and fight for their own personal glory. By not tying them to any specific god or mythos we allow players to determine what type of dark powers they sell their soul to – demon lords, elder gods of pre-history or viler unnamed gods of Hyboria. The warlord aspect really identifies them, for they wield both the soldier’s sword and armor with the sorcerer’s foul magic. They contrast well with the holy powers of the Mitran Priest, the alien powers of the Herald of Xotli and more martial based soldiers. Playing the role of a Dark Templar warlord well will give a totally different insight into the Age of Conan storyline. But it is in the player-generated side of the MMO we expect the Dark Templar to really stand out as it rewards power hungry players who feed off battle, almost in the literal sense. And who knows, maybe they’ll get that chance to forge their own kingdom in the brutal world of Conan..."

Blizzard was FAR from the first to ever use the term dark templar, or even the first to use it in a game. In any case, we would have maybe a dozen games in existence if only those working with 100% original material were allowed. AoC has plenty of new or at least definitely not used enough features and material.

Oh wait, I forgot, everything ever said by FC developers or those who've tried the game, including professional media reps were complete and total lies and all video/screenies we've ever seen were faked!

Nor was WoW the first game to have elves and dwarfs, and yet how many people keep saying that games with such races are WoW clones?

But I digress. My post was but a playful stab at a community badly in need of some of its own medicine. You need not take it quite so seriously.

Considering your post history on these boards it is very difficult to take anything you say as a flippant matter.

It sounds all good and geeky but I wish he would cut the B.S and give us the real low down on the Dark Templar.

Meaning give us the nuts and bolts of the class such as spells melee combo's ect.   Compare it to other classes.   What classes is it strong and weak against ect.

If you are in a Pvp guild and ask a guild member, "tell me about the Dark Templar" they are not going to go on to talk about the history and fictious qualityies of the Character.

    Tell us the important stuff!

I doubt everything specific to the class will be released officially before launch. You wont see all spells, all combos, all armors/weapons/feats either.

Just like every new game, upon the public playing it against each other you will only then know what is good against what and good where.

Personally though, I understand your lust for more information, I believe FC is quite capable in meeting us half way. For example, some media with them out and about being played by someone that knows their strengths would be nice. Similar to when Lord Orion took that demonologist out for a spin filming when using fraps, something like that would be nice - impropmtuous and a welcomed surprise =)

The dark templar looks like a really good class to be. I would really enjoy playing as one.

Yea over the last few days I have to admit with another read of the article, the Dark Templar does look like a decent class. I wish they would hurry up and update other classes with new information like they have done here.

Always took you for a Guardian type though :P
