I think you're forgetting one important thing. Guild Wars is not a 'real' MMORPG (with monthly fee), thus it will appeal to a bigger audience. Just look at the facts... Bestseller MMORPGs (like Lineage/EQ/CoH) don't sell nearly as much compared to 'normal' bestseller games (like Far Cry, Splinter Cell, Call of Duty, Dungeon Siege, etc).
Real MMORPGs depend very much on the monthly fee while not requiring a really big userbase compared to the userbase of "regular games". Guild Wars will be like any other game without monthly fee. Those games are very much dependent on the success of it's initial sales in the first 6 (?) month, but because there's no monthly fee it will appeal to a bigger audience, thus causing more people to buy it (or at least I would assume more people would buy it).
And looking at the hype it looks like a lot of people will jump on the Guild Wars bandwagon. I think that Guild Wars will sell more than enough copies to keep ArenaNet running for at least several more years. And the don't forget that there will be a few more expansionpacks which will surely keep the cashflow going.
How much will Guild Wars cost? How much will additional chapters cost?
Guild Wars will be competitively priced, comparable to the cost of other titles of its quality. The subsequent chapters of Guild Wars will also be priced at a level comparable to other games.
Am I required to buy the expansion packs to continue to play Guild Wars?
No. Every purchase you make in the continuation of the Guild Wars saga will be your choice. If you purchase expansion packs you will gain access to new regions of the world, new skills and abilities, new items, new professions, and much more. However, if you choose to not purchase a chapter, you will still be able to play the chapters of Guild Wars that you own, and you will have common areas in which you will be able to play with and against your friends who have purchased the other chapter(s).
Will I remain competitive if I do not buy the expansion packs? Will I be able to compete with and against others if I have only some of the Guild Wars chapters?
Yes. Purchasing the newer chapters of Guild Wars will not make you strictly more powerful. You will have access to many more strategic options, due to the expanding nature of the skills, abilities, items and professions that you enjoy with each chapter. It would be similar to building a deck in Magic: The Gathering: The more cards you own, the more different playing decks that you can choose from to use in the game. When you buy the chapters of Guild Wars, you will acquire a larger collection of skills and abilities from which to build your skill set, but you will not gain more power. So if you purchase a chapter and your friend does not, you will still be able to play competitively against and with one another.
Because they way GW is Designed to maintain everybody on 1 server , Yes 1 Server and that they don't require alot of bandwith to maintain is the major factor here as there cost to maintaning the game compared to other MMO'S is alot less add on the fact that because of the no monthly fee alot more ppl will probably buy the product which means alot more sales which will give them money is how they make their money.
ArenaNet are breaking new ground not just with the game itself, but with their pricing scheme too, it seems. It all depends on just how much content will come with the new chapters, and how often they are released, and of course how many people buy into them (which I'm guessing will be a fair percentage). At any rate, assuming you buy every new chapter as it gets released, Guild Wars will almost certainly be cheaper to play - per month - than most other online RPGs out there.
It is a cunning way of making money on the game, but certainly much, much better than the blatant ripoff scheme employed by Sony with Everquest

Well here's my take on it.
