As I have stated before in one of my posts, my criticism of the game is based on its merits of being presented as an mmo, which it is not. As a singleplayer game, it's fine. Its multi-player is shoddily done, and goes even further by being the only singleplayer game with multi-player support that charges money by trying to tap into the mmo market without being an actual mmo.

And unless you know every game installed on my machine, don't make assumptions about what games I play.

Level 7? Thats is? Like i said, i am not trying to signal you out or anything and not making any assumptions on what games you play, just asking, what games you play besides HGL since you hate it so much.

First  off, yes that character is level 7. i posted it since it shares the same moniker as I have on this forum. That character is one of 6 i have right now, as i like to see what the variations between classes are. The highest is a level 10 engineer, which I am  finding to be more fun than the marksman in my screenshot.

What mmo do I currently play? Usually Anarchy Online, been playing off and on since beta.

I have also played just about every game on this sites list, either in betas, trials, or through actual subs. I play the games I comment on.

And you seem to be confusing criticism with hate. I am enjoying the singleplayer mode of HG:L. It is good for what it is, a simple hack and slash actionrpg. Just like Diablo 1 & 2, Titan Quest, Dungeon Siege, and the rest in that category.

As I have said many times, my main criticisms of HG:L have to do with HG:L being presented as an mmo, which no matter how the devs or the fanbois want it to be, it is not. So, when I look at the multi-player side of HG:L, I have to base it around other games in the mmo genre, instead of games in the actionrpg genre where it should be rated. No actionrpg has ever required you to pay for access to full content, and HG:L would have never gotten past release day with a sub required if not for Flagship slapping an mmo moniker on the game. They don't call it an mmo because it is one, they call it an mmo so they can justify charging money for subs.

Also, look around. This isn't the only game site which is printing articles about massive billing issues and shitty customer support. It is also not the only site on the internet citing the bugginess of the game in multi-player, as well as the half-assed mechanics of the multi-player portion. The multi-player game gives the appearance of something which was slapped together at the last minute, again to try to justify the mmo claim.

You enjoy the multi-player part, and that's fine. Everyone has their own opinion. I don't expect everyone to agree with mine, and I'm sure you don't expect everyone to agree with yours. Plainly, If I bother you so much, I would make the same suggestion as I gave the person who makes frivolous reports: there is a block feature, use it.

  • EvelknievelEvelknievel Member UncommonPosts: 2,964

Nope.. You dont bother me, so no need for me to block .. hehe .. This is a forum where we can debate and share experience on a variety of games we all play.

    Goodluck to you..

My question would be this:  What happens if you subscribe for some time, then cancel?  Do you lose the ability to use items you acquired?  Do you lose ability to access all your characters?

And if you choose NOT to subscribe, that means you don't get any updates (aside from technical fixes)?

I mean, it sounds like something worth purchasing as a single player game once the price drops to a more value-equivalent level ($30, maybe).

These days I think most MMO players expect a bit more for their money when it comes to both quality and quantity.  If you're paying $50 for the game and a subscription on top of it, then it needs to at least meet the standards of most other MMOs.  And if they're going with a more "free" model, like Guild Wars, then they need to offer similar features.

As an MMO, it's missing a lot of the player interaction features that define the genre (and so is Guild Wars), but they expect you to pay for a subscription despite not having much of a reason to.  The only reason to pay for a subscription is that they are witholding part of the game from you unless you continue to shell out money for it.

How often will they provide new content?  Once every 5-6 months?  Well, that means you're paying another $60 for less content that is likely in a typical expansion.  This is similar to what happened with DDO.  They promised frequent updates to make up for their lack of content.  But this turned out to be semi-annual at best.

Personally, I would never pay $60-$120 for an expansion (and that's only at $10 a month like Hellgate offers).  I don't care how good it is.  I guess I just have higher expectations, but I'll be holding off on this single-player game until it drops in price.

I think your questions are very valid. What I can say is you can purchase the game right now on Amazon.com for $40. HG:L is a very fun hack-n-slash game and I believe the SP is worth it. However I would wait on subscribing. You aren't going to get much benefit right now. As a matter of fact the event loot you receive right now takes up most of the space you get for the extra inventory slots you receive. And you constantly have to destroy the extra blueprints out of the inventory that non-subscribers don't have to worry about (in a near future this is supposed to be fixed). There is supposed to be added areas to explore and monsters to kill. But they haven't been added yet. I would wait on the subscription. You might have moved onto something else by the time the subscription is worth it.

The SP is fun though. The character classes are different enough that the game has replay value. The skill trees are set up differently in that there aren't many trees but many choices in what you have. The attributes will make a difference in how they are allocated. For example as a summoner with pets Willpower is king. But it comes at a cost to being able to wear the best armor. The game hasn't been out long enough for anyone to write the best character builds yet for each class, so you are going to have to experiment. Right now I feel I am gimped because tormenters really throw my summoner for a loop.

The game is addicting and IMO the best new generation action RPG available today with a lot of promise. It's still fun but could be a lot better.

Now this I agree with. The singleplayer game is good, although as said definitely not worth $50. $30 would've been a decent price for the game. As far as the subscription, they're putting out 300mb of content in December. So, I would definitely advise against subbing before then, as you're really paying for nothing of any real value right now, plus they've got some work to do on the mp side of the game regardless.
