Can I Handle EQ2 graphics?

sidebustersidebuster Member UncommonPosts: 1,712

I will start off telling you my specs. (note:I got earlier response with people telling me that my geforce fx isnt that good, but i will get back to that)

amd athlon XP 3200+

Geforce FX5200 256mb ddr ::::16::

768mb ddr ram.

I guess that is all that really is needed.
Will eq2 run decent on this? If I need to get better specs like the motherboard, it is
shuttle AN35 400 or somthing.

Oh yeah, I can play UT2004 with the graphics cranked up ALL the way. The game runs smooth as butter

DONT get an ATI.  ATI makes crappy drivers, and EQ2 was made for the Nvidia chip series anyway.

Most of the high-profile games were not made for the Nvidia chips series. The reason that Nvidia is in all the advertisements and loading sequences of the games is that they pay the companies for their whole "the way it's meant to be played" campaign. I've played numerous games that had the whole Nvidia banner on them (such as Far Cry, Unreal Tournament 2k3+2k4, and even FFXI) where my ATI Radeon 9700 Pro ran just as good if not better then my roomate's same generation Nvidia equivalent. On top of that I've had no problems with my ATI catalyst drivers except for one flickering problem in KOTOR (at least I think it was KOTOR, it was awhile ago), which was fixed by the next driver.

This is so false, Since ATI has launched the Cat Series they have been improving left and right with every release they are better giving better IQ and FPS. Nvidia has actually lost a step in thier drivers many cause in compatabilties.

As for your system, Everything other then your videocard is fine. Maybe upgrade to a full 1GB ram but your videocard NEEDS to be upgraded, you wont be able to even run EQ on the balanced setting. It would need to be set to a lower setting, which isn't totally bad but you wont be getting the best eye candy.

I won't be buying this game until i get a new rig. I needed one anyways, the one i'm on isn't even mine. I hope i buy it by the time EQ2 releases, but it looks doubtful image.

OK since you may still be confused I will try to explain it perfectly.

To be able to RUN EQ2 you need a Directx 8.1 compatible card. BUT it will have quite a lot of features disabled.---> these cards support some directx 9 features but in a very basic level.

To play EQ2 well you need a Directx 9 fully compatible card.

Your card WILL play EQ2 but dont expect high frame rates or high resolutions. Like someone (I dont remember) has in its signature.. "Nvidia, the way its meant to be played.. ATI the way it really plays" or something like that.. Nvidia is wayy behind in frame rates and quality of video compared to the ATI counterparts. ATI does have some issues with the drivers but they have been fixed with recent updates.

So.. if you have the money buy a new video card.. if not you should be able to play it just not at its best.

Don't think many are in beta currently unless you are a Friend or Family of an employee of SOE...

Question , would this card be able to play eq2 smoothly

ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9700 AGP 8X GRAPHICS

EQ2 can run on pratically any 64MB DX9 card on the market but it depends on how high you want the graphics. I reacently upgraded from a Radeon 9800pro to a Geforce 6800GT (Oc'd to Ultra Speeds) just for EQ2.

SOE has stated that they are designing the engine for tomorrow's hardware.  This means, even if you spent a ton of money on the best gear you can buy today, you still will not be able to enjoy EQII to the fullest for some time.  The offcial hardware FAQ may answer some of your questions and is available at:

    http://eqiiforums.station.sony.com/eq2/board/message?board.id=faq&message.id=12&jump=true

    Take it easy.

Your card isn't bad Sidebuster, it is like the mx series of the GeForce cards.  It is their low end DirectX 9 card.  It'll run EQ2 but the settings will have to be low or your card will bog down.  Check out the GeForce FX 5700 Ultra if your looking to save a few pennies.
