America being the leader is to be expected due to population size, however the UK being 2nd suprised me.

Oh i also saw this and WOW eve's population has been growing...

Doesn't surprise me..... I'd say as many as 1/3 of the players I run into in EVE are from UK/Australia..... huge fan base from what I can tell.

    I live in the UK.

The disproportionately large following in the UK does surprise me at first glance.

On reflection, the UK has a disproportionately large number of universities. Maybe this is where the big following is?

I can imagine students discussing Eve Online in halls of residence.

Oh yeah, there's tons of people from the uk in the game. Large, large amounts. I've noticed there's an even larger disproportion of scots for the size of country. It's really bizarre. You see it in signatures on the eve forums. Lot's of in jokes that only scottish people would recognise. Triumvirate has a large amount of them. One of there corps is scottish and theres lots of others within the other corps.  Everywhere I go I bump into scots. As to why there's a large number, I have no clue. I've bumped into a guy who was in my corp, by chance while in a pub. If you set a date for an eve meet in the player and gathering section, for a UK city, you're guaranteed to get at least 20 ppl turning up. I've been to a couple. Was a good laugh. They looked and acted like regular people also. CCP give out free stuff to these player organised gatherings. Best community in gaming.

I find it odd that the peak population times are in european times even though theres a larger population from america. Peak population time is 8pm eve time. Anyone got any idea why this is the case?

No, its because both Europeans and Americans are online then. EU Players are mostly online until 23:00 GMT, and (at least in my alliance) american players come into game from 18:00 GMT to midnight.

(Thats why many battles start at that time too)

Well in the UK i think 8PM Eve's time weould be peak seeing as Eve's time is GMT and the rest of the europeon countries would be around that aswel. In America They're anywhere between 5 and 8 hours behind us so they should start peaking out around 12am eve's time (GMT) and into the early hours of the morning of like 5am.

what i find interesting is the number of canadians since our pop is so much smaller than the us.

It grows because the number of MMO players is growing at a huge rate.

Most of the players in rookie channel are people that are bored of WoW after 2 years and looking to try other MMO's.

The only site I know of that is tracking what is happening is http://mmogdata.voig.com/

Look at the time zones and it may make more sense.  All of the UK is in 1 time zone, 0 GMT (correct me if I am wrong). Most of Europe is in the next time zone, -1 GMT.  So thier times are very similar.

The US has 5 major time zones.  I don't have any statistics off hand, but I would assume that the pop could be split between the East and West Coast (+5 and +8 GMT). Then you have Alaska and Hawaii, which I assumed didn't count for a lot of players, and the Central and Mountain time zones, which I also assumed didn't count for as much (although central may actually take some numbers).

The only other country I could think of that would have a similar spread is the Russians.  The difference between LA and NY is almost as drastic as either of those two cities and London in terms of dialect and culture.  The US is a huge and diverse country, and so are our gamers.

    Great Britain is GMT.
Rest of Europe is mostly GMT+1

Thing is as far as i know SOE keep such numbers tightly hidden away.

Also the reason Eve keeps growing after all these years is because the game has always been designed to be easily accessable to new players.  Free download, free expansions (included with the download), (mostly) lateral character progression, new content that adds to the whole game and doesn't just tack more stuff to the end, other MMO companies could learn a lot by looking at Eve's model.
