DFO going to have a skill tree?

raihiryuraihiryu Member Posts: 14

From what I've read, it seems as if Darkfall Online is going to have a skill tree. It looks like it's going to be a super beefed up version of Star Wars Galaxies (only thing I can compare it to) and that you're going to be able to go down one path, and if you decide later, you can switch it.... PLEASE SAY IT IS SO!!!

Gaining any/Switching between skills is one of the fundamental aspects of DF.

Of course let me clarify this up. You can not get every skill/spell in the game while playing a human because some skills are unique to each of the races(They said about 5% of skills are racial). Also some skills are only available if you happen to take on a prestige class(Like the paladin prestige class gives you a healing skill which can only be used once per day). You also have the ability to switch between prestige classes with little penalty which means those skills aren't entirely out of reach but remember with the prestige classes comes bonuses and possibly penalties(The Driud prestige class does not allow you to wear heavy armor).

From what I gather it will be alot of skills. But after you have trained them, you can only increase them by doing. So no levels or xp from mobs.

I've been waiting for like 3-4 years for something of this sort to re-release. I loved the versitality of pre-CU SWG and since then have tried to quench my thirst for online adverturing in FFXI, WoW, CoH/CoV, Lineage, D&D, DAoC, EQ II, Hellgate, LotRO, RFO, and Vanguard, spending $50 on most of these like an idiot, and only playing the free month. I REALLY hope this game delivers the versitality and player diversity that the other mentioned MMOs were clearly lacking for me.

Is there a release date set?

The game will have prestigeclasses that gives you access to skills but you still have to increase them by doing. So it will be more versatile than SWG imo.

No beta nor releasedate has been published. The usual answer is Soon (tm).

My qualified guess is that we will see beta 2008 Q1 and release 2008 Q4.

I am curious. With the paladin prestige class and the heal ability that is usable once a day, is that a game day or an actual day?

That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!

I noticed this as well by reading the game FAQ. My question is, since it is a PvP FFA server and there are no levels, how does one know whether or not it is a good idea to target another player to kill?

Sounds like crapy blance if the heal is powerfull enugh to have 1 day cooldown.

From what I remember from SWG, they had colors next to the mob name with a specific color. Rather than fighting certain level mobs, they judged the difficulty of said mob. It might have had something to do with how far you were in your 'skill tree'. Again, this is the only other game that I can compare it to, because it was similar in that sense too.

One doesn't know, simply, however the differences between novice and advanced characters are not as big as in level-based games - much is supposed to depend on player skill, aiming, dodging etc. The fear and uncertainty is what is so exciting about fighting enemies whose skills are unknown to you.

EDIT: Regarding the post above: no, there will be no such indicators, it's in the FAQ. The whole point that you should learn a player's or mob's relative power by engaging it, not by some artificial code or level.

What's so bad about not knowing if you're gonna win the fight before it starts.  If you have doubts don't attack him.

From what they put Paladins also have to give 50% of their earnings to the church(Not sure how it works).

That I'm not sure about. It will either be 24 hours or 4 hours but other than that its unknown to me.

I dont think DF will skill trees as SWG did.

But it will have a more freedom based skill system. 500 skills and 500 spells to choose from as you want.

And only common sense will be the limit.

I love the idea of not being able to con your targets.  Trials of Ascension had a similar mechanic.  Alas, that game ran out of funding and disappeared.  Not knowing how powerful another character is just hightens the tension of pvp that much more.  I really really hope this game sees release, even if it's not immediate.

Try Asheron's Call. If you like complete freedom with skills and no levels than that's the game for you..

Hell you can play on Asheron's Call Darktide  (pvp)server and get 80% of what darkfall promises already..  plus it's been around since 1999 so it has shitloads of content...

not many people play it though and even in it's golden years there was only a few hundred people playing on the PvP server..
