Dungeon Runners - my review

After playing Dungeon Runners in beta I decided to try it again...

I was surprised how lovely this game is

 

First off - it is only 400 MB download ! So it wont hurt your HD

Second - this game is Diablo/WoW clone , and it knows it which bring us to next thing

Dungeon Runners is Steve Jackson Munchkins of MMO

This game makes fun of every aspect of MMO, Hack and slash and CRPG

From quests that send you to "bring gray color for renovating the dungeon" , to "cardboard weapons of awsome geekines" and skills like "to much coffeine"

Graphic is shameless rip off WoW animation is good  , and the game plays like good combination of WoW and Diablo. Dungeons are randomly generated (Like Hellgate London)  , and last but not least - it is a F2P MMO that plays nothing like asian MMOs...

Game is instanced, but does a simple thing all other instanced games fail at -  The world chat caries over to instances - so you do not feel like playing single player game while in instances.

 

Only strange thing I found is that across 4 USA servers ( and one PVP with only 8 players on it ?!?! )

no more than 1000 player all together play DR ?

 

So people , this game needs some LOVE

Small download , fun gameplay , free , mega casual hack & slash !

 

Go for it !

    I have it on a disc given out with PC Gamer a month or so ago....might give it a go to see how long it lasts me..seeing as I'm inbetween MMORPGS

    I remember seeing it months ago. To be honest, no crafting or tradeskills is instant failure in my books.

    I enjoyed the game for what it was, played it when they first came out of "beta" (quotes because of all the drama that surrounded that). Enjoyed it enough to pay the premium service, played for another few weeks, then canceled. Was thinking about trying it again after the recent chunk, but with hellgate coming out so soon, I think I'll just have to pass for now.

    Fun game though, your review is pretty spot-on.

    There was really no reason to move this post from General Discusion here - since i made it to introduce few more people to this game. And people reading this part of forums already play DR.

    I really have to put a critique for poor moderating in this case

    Why is that? The game isn't about crafting or tradeskills, its about "dungeon running" and hacking and slashing monsters.

    Oh come now, you can't tell me you have been playing this game with that kind of review.

    The f2p portion of the game literally sucks.  The restrictions on equipment make it thoroughly unenjoyable.  Nothing worse than finding something decent only to find you can't use it unless you pay the monthly fee.  You can't even join most groups because they are playing the instances on harder levels and with your mediocre equipment you are pretty useless and they don't want you anyways..

    Take the monthly fee away and throw in an item shop model and the game might have a chance.  As it currently exists is just another loser of a game in a very crowded marketplace,

    I highly recommend you give this game a pass, it is not worth your time.

    Since DRs recent "chunk" as they put it, its improved preformace wise at least. I found this game to be alot of fun. Its definaly worth a try. The game does get better once you subscribe due to the equipment restrictions but reguardless its still fun to play and I might add the subscriptioin price is alot cheaper than any other P2P game that I have found. I think 5 bucks a month?

    The humor is the game is great. Cardboard GreatAxe of Ownage.. stuff like that lol...

    Its not something i would base my whole gaming time around but its a welcome distraction to the more time consuming titles out there atm . In my opinion even the free portion of it is far superior to any F2P game I have tried.

    I definitely disagree.  I play both member and non-member accounts and enjoy it thoroughly on both.  Personally, I think that since I play both I have a little better perspective on the differences between them in terms of playability and overall enjoyment.  Also, there are  max level (100) free players, so obviously they haven't had too much difficulty either.  Personally, I've never experienced the discrimination that you say happens and I've been playing since December '06.  I did ping some folks online tonight and some have heard of it happening, but it seems to be rare.  I wonder if it's something to a specific world (world 1 seems to be the rudest, by far).

    Regarding non-member vs. member loot, statistically, more non-member loot drops than does member loot.  Here's some info I gathered and posted on the official boards:

    Conclusion



    While the sample data is very limited, the statistics show that--for my ranger--fighter weapons dropped the most, mage weapons the least. Fighter armor dropped the most, ranger armor dropped the least. The percentages amongst color drops appeared to be fair, with white drops being the most common to rainbows being the least. I believe the high purple drop percentage for armor is an anomaly.



    * Indeterminate means any item that has statistics that make it desirable to more than one class. For example a white pair of 'bouncy pads' with no stats other than def and +% movement would be desirable for either a ranger or a mage. Likewise a green scepter--ostensibly a mage item--that has ludicrous speed and high damage output and has equal stats in STR, END and INt could be beneficial to both fighters and mages (on paper).

     In addition to the fact that more non-member loot drops (which makes perfect sense, because the items colors are based on "rarity, meaning that your blanket statement of "That means you cannot use 40% of the equipement you find in this game. " from a previous thread is erroneous and misleading), non-members get almost as much use out of the member gear that drops since members can't use (anecdotally estimated, based on experience) 90+% of the member loot that drops because it's not specific to their builds, isn't their level, etc...  Both members and non-members alike sell most of the drops for gold.  The only exceptions to the drop ratios are during boss farming and in the Horrific Dungeon of Legend, which is really intended to provide additional rewards for being the most difficult dungeon in the game.

    As to the item shop/cash mall approach?  I would much rather pay $5/month to use any item that drops than pay per item.  I'm willing to bet that many players who play longer than a few months would spend less using the current revenue model ($15 / 3 months, for example) than they would in an item shop/cash mall model.

    As I replied to another of your posts, however, it's a moot point.  In-game advertising is coming for non-members.  This will convey some membership benefits to non-member characters:

    Ads are definitely coming. Let me outline where things stand on Ads now:



    1. Build 93 has the in-game Ad implementation completed. It is only accessible by testers at this point. We need to get feedback from Double Fusion (our ad provider) about the implementation before unleashing it on you.



    2. Only FREE players will see ads.



    3. The most prevalent advertisement will be an always-visible banner at the top of the screen. It's not too invasive, but you will notice it. Here's a screenshot of this in action...



    4. We also show a 15 second movie ad on login and logout for FREE players only.



    5. There is a chance to see a larger static ad when changing zones. This chance is based on the total play time on your character. I believe it tops out at 20%.



    6. There is a chance to see a 15 second ad movie when respawning after death. This chance is based on the total play time on your character. I believe it tops out at 20%.



    Once ads are implemented, free players will have access to more features. Here's the current plan:



    1. 100% of Yellow items that drop will be usable by free players.



    2. Free players will receive one bank page. Members will be given two additional bank pages.



    3. 25% of Purple items that drop will be usable by free players. This percentage will be adjusted through testing...



    4. 25% of Rainbow items that drop will be usable by free players. This percentage will be adjusted through testing...



    5. Minor potions will become stackable to 5. Major potions will be remain members-only and will stack to 10.



    That about covers the ad goodness. I expect it will be ready for release to you sometime in November. I'll post again as it gets closer...

    To be a pro?  What does that mean?  Did you even read my post?

    • Do you need membership to enjoy this casual, funny hack-n-slash game?  No. 
    • Is membership worthwhile? In my opinion, yes.  While it's not necessary, contrary to what some other people think, it makes an already  fun game that much more fun.
