My point being there hasnt been a single innovative MMO released since EQ1, theyre all eq1 clones, and theyre all crap. nuff said.
Nonsense statement actually, while many games have followed the EQ 1 model, a number have stepped off the path quite a bit including EVE, COH/COV, Lineage 2 and SWG to name a few.
You may not like them...but they don't follow the mold of EQ 1.
SWG: EQ with a lucasarts skin and better crafting. Grindtastic!!!
Lineage II: huh? ah ok it has unrestricted pvp, big innovation XD but Lineage II == EQ II (which came from EQ 1). Grindtastic!!!
Eve: yea, eve is a pretty unique game, but there it's an isk grind instead of xp. Grindtastic!!!
TR: WoW with guns, which is an EQ clone. Grindtastic, but read on.
The real innovation in TR is a grind that doesn't make you feel like you are grinding. CP's are actually fun and get your blood pumping. So much better than walking around a 100x100m area which is appropriate to your level and killing stuff as it spawns, with no goal other than getting xp. You are assaulting a base or protecting one.
They are still tuning the spawn rates, so yea there are issues with some CP's not spawning often enough.
Then rather than granting abilities by level, you need to find logos that unlock abilities _and_ you need to level. Finding the logos gets you xp when you turn in the logo missions. Some logos/areas have prereqs and puzzles and some you need to explore the map to find them.
TR's innovation is to make grinding and leveling actually fun. This is a very positive step in the right direction. It's not genre breaking, but you need to start somewhere. As far as gameplay, he made terrain count. This is a second innovation that kicks ass. It's not perfect either but is 95% there. Other than that it's SWG with limited target lock instead of something that stays locked.
I'd lay 100 credits on the fact that you'll see more games incorporating this method of making xp fun and including terrain in calculations. He just crossed king of the hill and scavenger hunt with mmorpg. I haven't seen any other game that successfully did this. Ask anyone that likes the game and they all agree CP's in TR are really fun. Getting logos and being able to step up in armor/weapons scratches the achievement itch.
So while still grindtastic, at least TR is fun. At least I think it is. To me fun factor is everything. I don't care if you spent 3 years developing a game model or whether the model is based on this or that game back in 1989.
A game is either fun or not.
The difference between TR and all those other games is you aren't leveling exclusively as a means to an end. The leveling is actually fun. In all those other games, that's what the grind is... get to level cap so you can pvp or grind purple loot. If you are a person that plays games slow and doesn't race to level cap, this game will appeal to you too.
Then there are clones so you can have multiple characters without starting at square 1.
The fun begins on day 1 with this game, not after grinding for three months. This is also true for Eve. You can fly a tackling pvp frig within a week or two, but frankly, eve is boring. It has it's moments in fleet battles, but most of the time it's as exciting as watching elderly porno. TR doesn't have this problem. The flip side is that in eve, during those boring periods, it's a good time to hang out with your clan mates on TS/Vent and shoot the shit, which is actually more fun than the game for me. In TR, not so much because there's always something happening LOL.
Maybe it's just shiny and new, but I don't remember SWG being this fun early on, at least pre-CU. I liked WoW for about 4 hours. By the end of my two week trial, I was logging back into Eve.
I cancelled subs on SWG last week. I'll probably play again, just not right now. TR has me hooked. Even if it's only fun for a few months, it was worth the money. I'll just go play AoC and try that out.
Tryed it, didn't like it. I really have just an all around issues with levels. Why I've been playing EVE for years. A guy playing for a few month can kill me if I make a mistake. And some one stated that its a grind for isk, not to true. It depend on taste, and how good you are. I mission for a week and I'm set for the rest of the month for ships and mods.
Well, there's criticism, and then there's annoying bashing.
Personally, I didn't find the game to *my* liking in beta and I voiced what I thought was wrong with it. For me, TR falls under the umbrella of "wait a few months and check back in."
Then you had people that acted like TR ate their firstborn. Happens with every game. These people are quite irritating and soon find themselves muttering in a corner to their troll friends, while others either move on or settle in to enjoy their game.
Well, I mean that statement is alittle so-so. They had the vehicles and all the new areas ready in Beta, but they didn't implement all of them, even when they said they would implement them to test them. I think they do have alot of content "ready" problem is, in Beta when we'd hit a major patch for a content update or a bug fix, we'd run into a plethora of other issues. They've done some spit and polish before launch thats for sure, but I think they're trying to be 100% sure before they push the new content that they won't have the same problems.
I don't enjoy correcting people, but I think I should point this out before people jumping off the walls. The most recent message from Richard Garriot pretaining to 'mounts/vehicles' is that they are now entering artwork stage. Meaning, they figured out what it is for each class, but haven't even begun developing them for the game yet. The new planet, I believe the name of it is Mykon or something of the sort, hasn't started development yet either. However! They have released new pictures such as new mobs that I'm guessing are part of the new planet.
So we'll see!
Maybe we're talking about two different things. Near the end of Beta they were implementing Mechs (mounts somewhat I guess) and new higher level areas.I can't find the article off the bat, then again I haven't really looked for it. As for actual vehicles, I haven't been keeping up with it enough to know whether they would have it or not.
Of course, you've followed this game much more closely then I have so no doubt that you would know more, so let me know if I'm wrong about them not suggesting that Mechs would be available at the end of beta for +40.
wow what a bunch of BS from people that obviously didn't even play the game.
It all comes down to personal opinions really, and my personal opinion is that TR is the first innovative MMO since EQ1. Well let me rephrase that the first one to sucessfully inovate the gameplay associated with a MMO. others tried but none have done it soo well as TR.
Since EQ the MMO model has always been on time sinks and passive gameplay. you stare at a UI waiting for refreshs while cleaning your nails. TR changes this and other seemingly hard coded gameplay quirks and turns them upside down.
Another thing that TR implements extremely well to a level unseen up to now is immersion. The world feels alive around you as NPCs fight and die, dropships drop their squads guns blazing, a stalker deep space drops in front of you and slowly unfolds its legs standing tall, the outpost you were just lazily afking suddenly gets stormed by the bane and you find yourself fighting for your life with the rest of the players/npcs at the base. Its amazing and you have to experience it to understand how well its done in TR.
Its a great game, and if you are bashing it just for the sake of bashing then i feel sorry for you because you missing out on something fresh, new and most importantly fun.
I for one don't know what it was like in the beta, because I didn't get to play it. If the beta somehow ruined some people's experience of the game, then I am kind of glad that I didn't play it. Right now, after release, I simply love this game. It is very fun. Except a few issues, such as bugs and network lag (I play on Centaurus), I think they are doing quite well for themselves and have released quality.
Lobo, why hasn't Mythic been added to that list of yours?
"Time is not money, it is much more; For I would give my very last dollar just to have one more moment on this Earth; But I can't, for time does not accept payoffs, only lives"
Actually I think the reason for the absence of haters is not because the game is that good. When people have very high expectations from a game and the game does not live up to them (SWG, Vanguard etc), you get very vocal reactions from the people. In TR's case, I think that people just don't really care. Everyone I know that is playing, is playing while waiting for the next bug thing, no one seems to expect to be in TR for years to come. Low expectations equals mild reactions.....
I love the way people talk about how they tried the game but didn't like it because they don't like levels. Didn't you look into the game before purchase?
Actually...scrap that, I have done the same thing on many occasions...bought a game on impulse/hype and then been dissapointed.
Just so happens for TR wasn't one of the dissapointments.

There is really nothing to say about it. Its not that good, its not that bad.. its an average game. The pro side is, the fan boys are not making up lies and pure fantasies to pull in new players (like the followers of another newly released title) so people that did not buy the game do nto have to come in and put the foot down with the harsh reality, so that the gullible dont buy somehting that is sure to disappoint them.
That is, up to a post like this, when you think the silence means the game is awesome. No its not. Its just nothing to be upset about.

Compare that to Vanguard where the hype was amazing even after release. The critics and haters felt like they had to keep saying stuff to counter the hype. They were literally agitated into a froth by the stonewall of hype. Especially post-release since there was no "Its Beta".
Ive got a lot of hating for this game. Its boring and repetitive. No character dev. No RP. Constant clicking. WoW style questing with a map that will tell you exactly where to go. I'd rather spend 15 dollars a month on peanut butter.

Speaking of this, I just bought 15 dollars worth of Peanut Butter last night (made those little Peanut butter and Honey treats for a party). Was a much better investment IMO.
I played 3 classes up to lvl 40 (not including clones) and I have to say the game is fun up until a point (repetitive)...And being able to do this in a matter of a little over a week, I passed on this games Retail. I got everything out of it for free in beta lol.
Maybe in a year they will flush out all of the fail and have a pretty decent game.

Who in their right mind would make 3 level 40s in over a week (ok I can see making 3 classes since your in BETA) and say they sorta enjoyed the game, but unfortunately peanut butter/honey treats is a better investment (I know this is exaggeration, but you get my point).
Since BETA, this game has made HUGE improvements. Its a shame you wont see this and just remember it for its BETA.
Anyways, I guess its best you wait a year anyways. Enjoy the peanut butter. As a matter of fact, that sounds pretty good, going to get me a PBJ sandwich now.

IMO they are all clones of Meridian 59.
Waiting for a decent PvP MMO here.

I was a bit of a 'hater' on the beta forums, as I caused some ruckus and banged my head against the wall trying to get more PvP into this game.
Needless to say, I lost and one of the most innovative combat systems of all time will be wasted on mindless NPCs! Downright tragedy I say.
True to my word, I am not playing this game, and I'm sure my hour long PvP vs PvE debates in the general chat will be missed
