Provided you have a decent video card you will be able to play with the High Res textures in DX9. DX10 wasn't required for higher resolution textures.
I can provide you with an idea of how much time and space the high-resolution will require:
I downloaded the high-rez trial on Saturday. My DSL downloads at 3,000 kbps. I think it downloaded in about 4 hours and it takes up 7.8GB on the hard drive. After I installed the game I had to wait another hour while it download some updates. I think book 11 came out last weekend and I don't know if that contributed to the d/l time.
It won't cost you 4+ hours to download the high-rez because the alternative is d/l the low-rez. I don't know how long that takes but if you have the extra hour or two I say, "go for it."
I did not enable directx 10 and I am running the game at 1680x1050 on a 22" widescreen LCD. It looks great and runs smooth on my PC, but I have a dual-core CPU and a 256MB PCI-E graphics card.
The high rez textures don't really hit most systems that hard, and look about a jillion times better than the low rez ones.
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.
Myself, I'm willing to gain a few more fps in the cities and sacrifice a bit of atmospheric and lighting effects. I like the nicest textures that I can see though... so I have those cranked all the way up. Even for people with "identical" systems you'll probably have to tweak the settings for your particular preferences.
You don't have to be a "techie" to do the majority of the option settings. They are all pretty straight-forward and a description of what each change does is available in the options menu. So, you can just play around with the settings until you like the way it looks and plays.
Thanks for the info
I didn't want to download this 6gig file and find out that i need to have direct x10 in order to play it, so i had to make sure.
