Im most MMOs if you want to try a different class you started an alt from lvl 1. Doing this in turn gave those New to the game people to group up with and people with greater game experience to draw knowledge from.
With the TR cloning ability doesnt this eliminate That mechanic. Isnt it going to get harder and harder for new players. Is allowing people to skip content for alts in this way anticommunity building?

TR can live without grouping. Come to Vanguard where groups need you!!
I think that there will always be a few people who either clone early (level 5) or don't clone to save the credits, who will still be running the very early content.
I'd imagine there'd be many people going down the Soldier branch right now, who might later go back and try their hand at Specialist once they get a feel for things.
Also, they have said many times that around +/- 10 levels will still be fun and rewarding to group with. Hopefully, this means there will still be groups for new players with slightly slower leveling older players.
Hell I didn't group in Vanguard as a Necro and DK up til level 35/sarcasm off.
I don't think it will be a problem in the long run. I think TR has a plan in the aspect of hieher tier content for those who want to clone straight to 50 without going through the usual of doing a quest over 80 billion times in a game (why I had only 2 avatars in every single MMO I have played (exception Guild Wars).
The usual MMO usually pugs or join a clan anyways (they don't give a damn about the community usually).
Don't know but i like it. major thumbs up for removing a time sink. Just speeds up the alt process.
You have to consider the server design too. In a year or so, we will not see 9 instances of the newbie area like today but 1 or 2. That will make it easier to find a team mate, naturally. Love or hate the instancing in TR, but it affect the gameplay in many ways.
I also play(ed) Ryzom, a skillbased game where a highlevel character can choose a lowlevel skill to team up with new people. The result was a very friendly place for new people. The cloning could work like this in some ways - work on one of your lowbie clones to recruit new clan members.
It's not an entirly new concept, for instance DAoC allows a character start at 20 once you have a 50th level one. Getting to the first decision point is very quick, especially once you know the game. The advantage comes later if you want to try a Commando after being a Ranger, or Spy after Sniper. Overall this function I don't think is a big selling point.
The way the tree system works as gave me the thought that, although cloning does allow you to make a new character at a base higher level. It still doesn't allow you to make a whole new character. You cannot be a [tank] and clone at 50 to be a [healer], you'd have to level your level 5 clone all the way up through the [support] tree. [For example]
That being said, I agree that this feature isn't a huge selling point nor is it a particularly game changing mechanic. I don't think its design would impact the community as heavily as that. Mostly, I believe, it's there to make your choices in class not completely dependant at higher levels, but not worthless either.
Mostly the, "Damn I hate fighters, why wasn't a a brawler?" syndrome. Helps remove the tedium from bad or regretted choices.
Cloning is one of the main things that made me quit playing this game at the end of beta, that and holding down my mouse button indefinetly thinking i was doing combat.
The problem with the clone system is it is the only way to get your skills back, for example to a brand new player in tr they are going to take skills in the t1 armors and weapons, well once you switch to commando or specialist those points in that armor are uselss (unless of course you want to opt out of using your specialty armor for the motor assist) Thereby FORCING you to clone if you want to be able to use those points. And you dont get to respend your Attribute points EVER.
Which in turn completely disconnects you from your character seeing as how if you want to be actually effective at end game you WILL not be playing the character you rolled in the beginning but a clone of them that you HAD to use to get your points back so they can be spent on higher tier skills.
For someone who has gotten max level you would actually be better off rolliing a new character so that you can reconfigure your attributes for the new class you want (i.e. more Hit Points for a brawler or more energy for a specialsit( and try to squeeze through the first 15 levels without spending any points that would force you to clone. Thereby not wasting a credit.
Its a gigantic flaw in the game and it really turns me off to it.
Lick Here you could be one of the lucky 10!!!
I completely agree that cloning sounds like a good idea, but leads to serious tedium instead. To get tokens you have to complete goals such as finishing every quest in a zone which is very difficult with a good 10%-15% of quests bugged.
You also end up farming large amounts of equipment to break down just to craft anything decent for your clone.
Instead of letting you experience another tree fully you end up placing points in your current tier and not experiencing the meta class. To progress reasonably efficiently you have to set a plan and clone every tier. Otherwise you will not be able to use the defining gear or skills for your class and might as well just run around with a shot gun and maxed firearms...which is honestly the best leveling advice for someone who doesn't want to focus on collecting clone tokens.
Just hold down the fire button and buy ammo every time you enter town. No need to worry about cover or anything.
It isn't that TR is bad, but it is really unpolished in many areas and considering all the delays in its development that really isn't acceptable. NC needed it out this financial year and that is why it was released in the current state. Too bad because even if they patch in the polish it may be too late to hook enough players to stick around.
