So, what is the status of crafting in AoC?

The last we heard much of anything on crafting, Jayde told us that crafting had been "mechanically functional" for over  a year.  Avery, what is the status on crafting.  Also, any particular reason why crafting went from the major source of gear last year to "back seat" status this year with the focus being on raid loot that crafters can enhance with jewels?

Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware

"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."

We are still in the dark about alot of how things will work, but we have been given some small bits of info here and there this year so far.

    From AoC Wiki:

There are four world-based resources that the players need a lot of- gold nuggets, iron ore, stone slabs and wood. These are gathered with an active interaction. Additional crafting ingredients can be found in all the normal ways - gathering, drops, etc. The ingredients can be combined at special locations if they are advanced, or directly in your inventory for simple stuff like bandages, etc.

In Conan, the crafted equipment is slated to hold a very special place in the object hierarchy. The player-made items are the only ones where you can insert socket gems - thus their role will be that of flexibility and adaptability. The crafting system is a no-nonsense, quick approach where the focus is on being quick and usable, not quasi-realistic.

    Weaponsmith

As the name implies, a weaponsmith specializes in making various forms of weaponry for arming those he plans to support in battle. Using techniques passed down for generations, a smith trained in these arts can produce some of the most deadly weapons in Hyboria. In addition to creating arms, this smith may also supply various other forms of weapon enhancement materials, such as whetstones and polishes.

    Armorsmith

Similar to the weaponsmith, the armorsmith focuses on crafting various pieces of protective gear in addition to ways to enhance said equipment. Having many avenues available to them in terms of advancement, the armorsmith may choose to provide a very wide variety of armor styles, ranging from leather to full plate

    Gemcutter

Taking advantage of the skills of the armor and weapon smiths, the gemcutter specializes in honing and crafting gems to decorate and enhance equipment. While some gems only have minor effects, others found in crypts or carried by those practicing darker arts may carry strange powers which can be harnessed by the gemcutter’s craft. As the gemcutter is familiar with working with a fresh set of armor or weaponry, they can also provide some more straightforward modifications such as counterweights or other reinforcement.

    Alchemist

Trained in various pharmaceutical and metallurgical arts, the Alchemist specializes in creating various compounds with strange and seemingly unnatural effects. Utilizing both common and rare ingredients found around Hyboria, those trained in this art may provide many useful consumables to their allies for use both in and out of battle.

    Architect

Concerned more with the “big picture” than simply making equipment or potions, the architect is set on designing the more impressive buildings and siege engines used to wage war in the Border Kingdoms and beyond. Carrying a great burden of responsibility to those he allies himself with, architects facilitate the design of cities as well as devices designed to protect his allies’ assets or destroy his enemy’s.

We were also told by Jayde back at end of June that The Crafter Class can probably master 3 of these at a time although that might get 'tweaked'

Lord Orion also said couple of days before that:

With Jayde, quoting the quote to say:

I think this is somewhat of a non-issue.

In having a flexible socketing system, I think it was to be expected that we will use it in order to create some unique, flexible items in various other forms than crafting--be it PvP rewards, certain drops, or things of that nature.

This does not change the fact that -all- crafted items are -fully- socketable, with that being their primary purpose. The select use of the socketing mechanic in other areas of the game does little to diminish the fundamental benifits of the crafting system.

Still don't know where we are with any type of Dying yet as nothing has been confirmed properly.

This year with more siege information released it looks as though the Architect will be most important to make and repair structures.

I'll assume its still the same and not experienced based, the ability to progress is done via quests, so it wont seem like a day job doing the same thing over and over for levels.

Lasty, it was said couple weeks back that crafting is still under wraps, expect and update soon, and that it won't be as complex as SWG but more akin to WoW but with meaning.

We know it will play a bit part in PvP with nearly everything being done by hand from buildings to siege weapons, for example siege weapons are certainly not laying around for you to use, and structures suffer from damage.

Even if crafters can enhance raid loot with sockets, its been said alot that raided gear wont be properly specialized for PvP. So you don't have to go raiding to get the best gear for PvP. The fact that PvE gear can be enchanced by crafters is solely for the purpose of improving your PvE experience.

A bit of a downer. From the official FAQ at www.ageofconan.com i had the picture that the crafter prestige class is absolutely free to do what they want. And of course to master as much as they want.

Another question is about the gems for the sockets. Are those plain gems which add one or more stat to you character or are there also gems with a deeper history. So they not only give +10 fire damage but also change the appearance of the weapon into a burning weapon. Do they have different meanings ? Like adding damage while reducing health  because the story of the gem is a brutal but also tragic one ?

I have read that you can overdo spellweaving. So i could imagine there is the "Cursed Ruby of Burning Doom" which adds a lot of firedamage but also DoT's or life leeches the one who wields the weapon. Or the other way round there could be a "Diamond of Endless Life" which lowers your damage but heals you for a small amount every time you hit.

Which leads me to the question if swaping weapons in-combat is something you want to do in AoC ?

There hasn't been more information on gems other than that they add bonuses. I think it's safe to assume that they won't do anything major like turn your sword into a constantly burning sword (this is low fantasy after all). There was a burning sword shown in the last video on Blackring Citadell, but it looks like the player was doing a combo.

And about gems that give some bonuses and curses, there hasn't been anything said about that.

Well,  for me its not about a burning weapon. I am fine with weapons made of steel, iron, bones and whatever.

It was more a global view on the industry. Lately companies bring in sort of mini programs. Like Tabula Rasa's logos or Heros Journey's Wyrd. EQ2 tried something similar with adornments and the tinkerer profession. Much more then the different gems in D2 for example.

I am not completely familar with the Conan lore, but i could think of common gems and of "named" gems with pros and cons. Not only to change your blade into a flame, but also change your avatar. Like the "Sapphire of  the Daemon Beserker" that turns you into a Daemon Beserker when in combat. And i can think of combinations of gems to discover even new ablities with. well, i am really just curious if Funcom is doing something new here. Lets see what will be in March :)

One neat thing about the Socketed weapons is that its in the lore already, 70 + years ago in a book called "The Phoenix on the Sword" Conan uses a "Socketed" weapon - he turned his weapon in a 'Demon Slaying sword' he also used socketed armor in "The People of the Black Circle"

So to be able to use a gem found as loot in the world is highly in line with the lore around which the game is based.

From past interviews im lead to believe we can use multiple gems on weapons.

March?  What happened to October?  or did you mean March 2007?  Or was that November 2006...  So many dates, I get confused.  My money is on November/December 2008 or Spring 2009.  Yes, you are right.  For once, a game is using real lore that has been around 70+ years and using socketed items.  It is as if REH had a vision for Conan and we'll get to see it out.
