Wow, is it already failing that bad that they need member referrals?

Perhaps.  I'm not one of the folks who are positive about TR... I've been quite the opposite, but from the comments of its players it's supposed to be a bit improved from its beta.

I don't believe it because I don't believe in so-called "miracle patches", but this could be a good opportunity to see for myself.  I won't knock the opportunity to give the game (or nearly any game for that matter) a trial run.

Now I just need to get my new computer running so that I can do so.

Probably not so bad they have to give out codes. They're probably giving them out since the Vanguard scandal. A lot of people don't want to dish out $50 for a new game if it is crap like Vangaurd was. Can't say i blame them. Not to mention it is good marketing PR. Try before you buy.

Simply put yes at least if the beta test I tried of the game are any inclination which I'm sure it is. The game was just another terrible grind it felt like every other NCSoft game a chore to play. It's not that the game didn't have potential and strong points, but overall it felt like too much a chore to grind your way up through the ranks/levels that it took away from the game experience itself plus it was too much of a dice roll for a game style that really deserves far more focus on aim/twitch skill given it's genre. It felt bad and wrong in the same way auto assault did I think they out right forgot that the game has to be fun first and for most and tedious isn't the way to accomplish that.

I wouldn't be so quick to judge just because they have released a referral program.  The concept of a referral program is tried and true to expand the community and expedite its growth.  Plenty of games (not just NCsoft ones) use this method from WoW to LotRO all give a free month of credit when a friend purchases at least a month.  So just saying they are failing because of this is unwarranted.

As for grinding, if you have stopped to look around at just about every MMO, there are varying levels of grinding.  In my opinion Tabula Rasa's grind is far less as compared to other MMOs (FlyFF, Silkroad, MapleStory, FFXI and WoW pre2.3 ... just to name a few).

Now Tabula Rasa never said, to my knowledge, that it was in the FPS genre (I've made the leap in assuming that is the genre you were referring to) only that it took several cues from it while keeping its RPG roots to be fun and immersive.  If it wanted to be an MMOFPSRPG they could've taken a similiar route to games like Battlefield 2142 or Huxley.

I may sound like a fan of the game, and believe me I would like to be, but the major points preventing me from playing were several glaring performance issues from my time in the beta (even though I met the requirements I still had to play in 800x600 with everything set to low to even inch above 10fps in the open areas).  Wow, sorry for the post, but I'll reserve my judgement for after I get a better computer and spend some quality time with the game.  Peace.

We usually see referral programs after the game has had a bit of life - not about a week after it went live. That is why I question it.

    3 day trial? LOL.

  • ChrstFckReblChrstFckRebl Member Posts: 13

3 days is pretty short, its almost comparable, but slightly better than the trial WoW gives you.  At least here it doesn't seem to limit you on what you can achieve in those 3 days.

I see all the comments here "buu TR is a bad game played the Beta buuu" and i think its time that some1 put in another opinion. As a man with not too much time i cannot afford to play 1-2-3 Hours in games like GW to earn the game rewards- and TR is in this aspect refreshing. I´ve played about 5-7 other MMO´s and yes, i also played the TR beta. There were times where i was fed up with the game, true. But after the beta was closed something strange happened :D
I´ve began to miss the game so i bought the retail version and im still having fun. Im not saying that the game is perfect- but it IS hell of a fun to play, a refreshing alternative on the market. On the other hand, if you already played MMOS since 3-5 (or even more) years, you cannot await to feel the same way as the first time. Everything in life works this way. The first experience of something positive is terrific and it will always have a special place in your mind (heart) and after that, you can only strive to have something near it, and Tabula Rasa is damn near this feeling. Great story, wonderful and tasteful graphics, some grind, but then there are a bunch of normal missions and if you take the time and read the texts, some of them are really funny. So i´d say give it a try now, and pls... all of you guys who played the beta (and stopped there). Stop talking about how bad the game is- ask someone for a trial key and jump in again. Cheers

Yup so true one guy mentioned all these other games and they didn't start offering trials until after the game had been out for a year or so first prior and subscriptions were all ready slowing down. It defiantly makes you wonder if a new game just released is all ready offering a trial the launch of a new game should be hype enough. I dunno how it changed since I beta tested it, but I wasn't impressed with the beta I got bored of it within a week or two.

Often times a MMO will be released, gain an audience, and then slowly wither.  This may just be NCSoft's way to get as many subscribers as early as possible.  Plus, if it is good (subjective), more subscribers means more word-of-mouth (free advertising).

MMO games played or tested: EQ, DAoC, Archlord, Auto Assault, CoH, CoV, EQ2, EVE, Guild Wars, Hellgate: London, Linneage II, LOTRO, MxO, Planetside, SWG, Sword of the New World, Tabula Rasa, Vanguard, WWIIOL, WOW, Age of Conan

People are so quick to jump to doom and gloom conclusions, could it be that MMO companies, aware of the large number of games out there (and “free” ones), are just expanding marketing practices to be more in line with competition... This is not the first MMO to offer such a program, and it wont be the last.

I agree.  MMORPG market models are changing and we can't base our perceptions on previous generations of games like UO or EQ.   NCSoft might have realized that they should take the approach of crack dealers - 'The first taste is free'  :)

People wondering how well TR is actually doing just have to wait for NCSoft's next quarterly report and look at the 'Income' line.     Things like a very early referral program aren't really solid enough informaiton in the changing MMORPG market to draw conclusions.

So get out there and get recruiting!

bah, how long will it be before someone combines MMOGs and MLMs (Multi-Level Marketing aka Network Marketing pyramid schemes like Mary Kay or Tupperware or HerbalLife or Nu-Skin or VMDirect or etc etc) - you recruit 3 people and they each recruit 3 people who in turn each recruit 3 people and before long there's 10,000 players in your "downline" each kicking up 3-5% of their plat or game time into your account.

Surprised no one has tried this yet.
