okay, unless EVERYBODY who plays mmo's get a super fast computer, and the makers of mmo's get super huge databases, we'll never have voice comunication, its slow enough with just chat and the fact you scream when you die, well, in EQ1 I spent 5 minutes dying...

Just use, Teamspeak or ventrillo, for guilds/friends, i assume you mean voice support ingame like you join a party and bam voice support, they have that in planetside and it sucks, my advise use ventrillo teamspeak or roger wilco these are all exclusive voice chat programs for games.
Technical issues aside, Voice Chat may add to the Role Playing aspect of RPGs. Especially if you voice is altered to sound like character you are playing. Additionally, It would save me a lot of time speaking my thoughts verses typing them out.
On the other end, a Developer would have to worry about liability. How many curse word have you said when you PK'd or experinced Death-by-lag. <Hold hand up> at least 10, 20 if it happens more then once. Also, harrasment would reach a new level - in WoW "Hey baby, wanna come ride my bat?" Obvious retort "You couldnt get in up life, what makes you think you can now?" Imagen grifters with voice chat..."I so own you!" well, no more eleet speak, maybe thats not such a bad thing.
I guess my vote is, would be interesting but MMORPG are not ready for it.
Prolly the best voice com since... sliced bread.. or something..
Takes 4 or 5 people, crystal clear sound, they aint kidding when they say "better then yer phone", allthough your hardware can make a diff here.
Me and my RL friends that play mostly the same games use it always, with a headset it is truelly awesome.
I have been trough pretty much every voice com there is, constantly looking for one were sound is ok, pc-telephone was also great, but only took 2 ppl, the in built net2phone in ICQ also works ok, but again only for 2 ppl.
Gamevoice, Roger wilco, netmeeting and all them other is pretty pointless really unless you want to talk to lots of ppl, the sound is awful in all of them.
So, unless you can offer huge amounts of bandwidth or state of the art software for your mmorpg, or both, i would not bother. Sound quality is everything, at least to me, heh anyone played CS recently? the in game voice com there, well people could just as well speak klingon.
License skype and save yourself a lot of trouble if you are hellbent on having one integrated in your mmorpg.

Tabula Rasa is going to have voice chat support in the game. THe devs have said that typing is very hard to do while fighting in TR... so voice chat will be there to make teamwork and battlefield communication easier.
There will possibly be voice masking, unsure about that so far.
It will only work within your group/party, no worldwide voice chat.
That poll was a little too straight forward. You can't gain any real information from it.
What would be a fun idea, is if your voice settings were randomised with pitch and timbre, that way, it wouldnt be your voice. You could then alter these two settings, to find the voice you wanted. Some races would be restricted to how far they could go with these settings, to make sure ogres had reasonably deep booming voices, and elves had higher, light whispery ones. Would sure make character creation take longer!

Using another piece of software is fine, but when you group with some random guy, the chances of him also having the same software you use is minimal. That is why it needs to be built in.
When my little brother and I game together, we call each other on our cell phones so we can talk. With free in network calling and free nights and weekends, we can talk anytime, and I live in Oregon and he lives in California. Works like a champ...
Even if it ends up being just voice to text, it still beats the hell outta typing.
And people keep saying that they'll hear the other guys mom yelling at him, etc. No, all it takes to avoid that is a push to send button.

Couldn't agree more. But it would screw up my newbie leech system.
STEP 1: Make a random female toon. Dress her provocativly, but not slutty (Slutty gives it away that theres about 90% chance it's a guy..ok 99%
STEP 2: Find a high lev male player, ask him question about the game, be polite, don't flirt (thats just creepy). The do the "wow everythings so expensive" speech and act innocent and bewildered.
STEP 3: After he makes a donation to the you making a new pimpy toon fund, transfer the cash to your real toon.
I know, it sounds horrible and mean. I've only ever done it twice. Both time "kind of" by accident.. I had actually made female toons for the hell of it, and guys would try to help me. - First time was in diablo, I was just talking to the guy and he started giving me stuff, then he started using himself as a shield while I killed. Didn't take me long to relise he thought I was a woman, so I played along till I was bored. Second time was in AO, again made the female toon just for kicks, and one guy was ALWAYS helping me, I told him I was a guy, but I guess he missed the tell cause when I mention it again later on he was all shocked and offended. (He had given me close to 10mill at that point.) I apologized tbut told him, I was, the other people on our team figured out I was a guy just based on the way I spoke, but he didn't. Eventually he started talking to me again, what was really funny was THEN I found he was married. I felt so cheap and dirty... ... But in general I prefer to make male toons.
BTW: Hypnotoad.. You win, notice I'm drooling all over myself from your evil hyno powers. But beware. I will have my revenge.
DAoC guild uses teamspeak. It works fine, you only have to use it if you want to, and makes organization during raids/rvr a hell of alot easier. It's also nice to be able to bs with people at 3 am while fighting, etc. and not having to divide your attention between typing and fighting.
As to having an actuall ingame voice chat. I'm ok with it, as long as it's optional to use, and doesn't cause any extraneous lag for those not using it. It wouldn't be very feasible at this point, techwise, unless it was very restrictive as far as making your own chat groups.

You should never have general voice chat in an mmorpg, but specific channels that you must be invited to, or if you are in a group then you can group chat, but I never would want to hear a general voice chat, too many voices and I already hate reading "I pwn joo", I would hate to hear a little 12 year old shouting "I pwn joo biyatch!"

33.333333333333336% of me is a huge nerd! How about you?
would be nice not to always have to type, but the amount of down-time this would cause would be too much.
And like everyone else, i dont wanna hear those screeching little pre-pubecent voices. scary
Bring out yer broad sword. theres the hydra. Slice his throat! and grab his scrote. You take the high road, ill take the low. there! the crevasse. Fill it! with your mighty juuuuuuuice.

An in-game TeamSpeak like voice chat would be great! It should not be a general game chat but instead it should be an optional clan tool for use in coordinating fights and having small team conferences. An in-game voice system would eliminate the need to run the game in windows mode or to do the alt-tab thing to find out who is speaking (via the lighted dot by their name). The menu for the voice chat could even have adjustable transparency.
If you don't want to play with young kids then join a clan that has an age limit.
Broadband will be very common two years from now when long range wireless technology (Wi-Max)becomes commonly available. So that is not even an issue.
It would make communication during large battles easier. I find it hard to type while killing elfers.
It would help everyone realize that the moron running around shouting the dumbest things you've ever heard is really a 10 year old.
There are negatives though. I'm sure harassment would get worse. Especially if enemies can communicate. In DAoC othe realms couldn't understand you, but on the hardcore servers you could kill and tlak too anyone.
Yes i think it would be a good idea, typing while battling is just annoying. And i remember this xbox online rpg game that would also change you voice, so if you were an orc or something of that nature you voice would be deep and low, and if you were an elf or something your voice would change accordingly. Although ive never played this game and dont know how well it worked. Did anyone else hear of that game??
Whether or not you're playing with a kid, there are people out there with voices that annoy the hell out of you, and you know it.
It would be a great idea, but the lag would be so horrible that even if you have T1 you're FPS would still be shitty. We all know it's going to happen, but there are flaws just like anything.
voice chat in game isn't necessarily going to happen on todays spec pcs
with that said team speak aim and ventriollo offered our guild in swg very useful tools when at first launched /tells /group chat and /guild chat didn't work as intended
with that said the guild has since died folks left the game and we still get together on our chat channel from time to time talking while playing our various other games
for a time voice gave our guid group an edge in organzing events/raids hunts real time awareness made up for games (not working as intended bugs )
