Dofus: New Hardcore Server

SzarkSzark News ManagerMember Posts: 4,420

Ankama Games has announced that they will be launching a heroic server in December which will operate under a hardcore rules set where advancement is fast and death is permanent.

This December, a brand new DOFUS game mode will introduce another dimension to battle-weary veterans and wide-eyed beginners alike.

This game mode offers quicker character evolution, allowing you to gain more experience from fights and quests. But you will also need to be more vigilant and tactical in your game play because if you die, you won’t come back. The new mode will also call for more dedicated and concerted guild activity in order to help players survive for as long as possible.

In this highly intensive mode, the game has been adapted according to new rules which are exclusive to this server. Among other exciting modifications, this mode allows players to increase their level far more rapidly and to make better and bigger drops! Experience in professions will also be gained more quickly. This server has one cruel rule above all, however: death will be permanent. You cannot come back to life. If your character’s level is in the top 100, however, the corpse will rest in the Cemetery of Heroes.

Another diabolic hallmark of the server: whether players lose against monsters or other players, their victorious enemies will keep all their items. Some enemies, though difficult to beat, will be tempting to fight for just this reason.

In future, part of the official site will be dedicated to this server with regular updates giving information on the new world, including its background. This part of the site will also host the Cemetery of Heroes. Warriors of all nationalities will take each other on to rise to the top of the world league table.

To those who thought they’ve mastered DOFUS or seen it all, the Ankama Games team hereby challenges you!

Huh...and they said that no one would ever try to make a permadeath game/server.....

looks like "they" were wrong.....   will be interesting to see how well this experiment fairs....

Who is this "they" you refer to? Regardless, this is good news to whoever it appeals to. Personally the turn based action never appealed to me enough hardcore or not.

Here you have it! Finally a Permadeath game!

With this game, I'm in.  Now let's see the carebear griefers of Darkfall come along for this ride.  This is server type I've been waiting for.  This is what pvp is all about.

Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware

"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."

    Yeah, cool.

The 200 people who play on this server will probably really like it ... until it is closed due to lack of subscription revenues.

"They" being the people who have fueled countless debates over the years over whether Perma-death can work in an MMO game.

All the way back in 2003 (when LotRO was still called MEO) there was this article about the subject:

    www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/loadNews/200/

and then there's been countless threads over the years discussing it between players like this:

    www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/102798

Its a long debated topic, and I'm glad to get a chance to see if it can successfully work out somehow.....

I love the idea of a permadeath server if I'm playing PvE but I'm not so sure about PvP.  It seems that Dofus has something like free-for-all PvP but is it restricted to certain areas or is PvP unavoidable?

So by "they" you mean a bunch of random people on the internet. People say all kinds of stupid or uninformed things, usually based on their opinions. I do agree with wanting to see how it turns out even though I for one am not interested at this time. Then again this game is a flashed based game with turn based battles so I don't know how many hardcore people will really turn out for this. What this game proves and a larger funded game requiring more manpower and resources are two completely seperate things. That's why I at least question what results may come, good or bad for PD servers.

I hardly even care what the game is about - a perma death MMO server is enough to get my monthly subscription

  • angus858angus858 Member UncommonPosts: 381
Well, I gave Dofus a try. Turn-based combat is not for me. The community was atrocious. I don't speak much French but what I did understand was generally offensive. People were actually PKing newbs in the very first quest. I only played for 30 minutes but that was enough. I love the concept of permadeath but I'll pass on Dofus.

Which is part of the reason I doubt this games implementation of PD will prove anything. Turn based gaming really isn't for the masses, probably even less for turn based Perma death.

Besides the fact that if you read the problems alot of people complain about disconnection problems

I couldn`t care less about permadeath on this game, it`s a waste of effort. the game sucks.

Permadeath`s no good for some childish sad thing like Dofus. nobody`s going to check it out on that game... and I happen to like TBS battles. I`ve been hanging on Final Fantasy long enough I guess.

But the game just doesn`t look and feel mature enough for something like DEATH. coooome on...

Y`know who`s should? if they haven`t gotten a permadeath server yet... >.> Blizzard.

They should definately put out a permadeath server in WoW. Best place to test it out too, enough people there. And heck, you can have more than one character per account anyway, so one that dies all the time wouldn`t be in the way... it would make the game pretty much interesting.  well, it would ofcourse be way more interesting for blizzard if permadeath meant you have to buy a new account :P

And well, it`s just the type of MMO you`d expect a permadeath in. or wish for it.

games like Rappelz, Conquer Online, Silkroad, heck, even Ragnarok, would do great with permadeath. (probably Ragnarok a little less, but that`s only my opinion, I die too much in there, I`d never get over level 5)

I find it a bit strange this is called "revolutionary" tho, I mean, I`ve been playing with "Iron men" characters alot longer than since yesterday... even if it means something old like Diablo, or something oldskool like those text based games. It`s all been there long before, but now finally some company copies it on a graphic interface.

All I can hope for is that the guys over at RF online don't think of this. EVER. chaos pots are abused enough as it is on novus for bellato. with perma death......itd be pure HELL

Although, for the chip wars on it, if there was no lag, it would add a wonderful tactical edge to it

Regardless of what the game is, someone was bound to try it eventually

*sits back and waits for the results*
