would advice you not to buy this game

    reasons:

    - since its release in 2003, this game is very outdated

    - very very less or only a few play this game, so its impossible to find a full group for quests (I will get flamed for this statements, because there are a few swg fanbois who keep in touch with some SOE employes or developers during some game summits and they enjoy beeing "pet headed´" by them and they are proud that they know some SOE devs and that they talked to them in reallife, so no mather how wrong the game is, they will always keep playing it and saying that it rocks... dont listen to them)

    - its not a very popular game and has a very bad image, since the company sony online entertainement does not care much about its fans and their feedback of how the game should be

    - player based content has been taken away with the release of a patch called "NGE - next generation enhancements" and been replaced by something similar to the world of warcraft questing system, and the overall interface looks like a copy from world of warcraft as well, so its the same old get 7 of Y and bring it to X quest which gets boring pretty soon.. SOE thought that it was a good idea

    - the customer support is terrible, because the employes make a very incompetent impression when it comes to live chat support for example (ingame support says ask the live chat support, live chat support says ask the ingame gms)

    - 15 bucks each month is not worth to play the above I have posted

and so on and so on...

so overall this game is about to beeing shut down, you would throw 15 bucks out of the window...

my advice: dont play this game, I gave you reasons and didnt just say this game sucks, so its up to you of what you decide now...

If you love Star Wars, I would have to say yes. You can get the box and all expansions for $20. Even if you decide you don't like the game after a month, you still not out much and you can say you have experienced it.

If you wish to try it, there is a 10 day free trial on the SWG site.

  • TheChronicTheChronic Member Posts: 253

here are a 2 alternative games, which you might like and that are far better then the current state of star wars galaxies:

    - lord of the rings online:

it also has the same old "get 7 of X and bring it to Y" but its a lot of fun and the graphics is very nice, so if you got a nice pc to play it, I would advice you to check it out..

    - world of warcraft:

why play a copy when you can play the original? wow is one of the most successful mmorpgs and you wont have a problem to find a full group in game with almost 9 million customers

Heh, it's funny how some here like to think that anyone who has something good to say is an insider from SWG.  Following that theory, can I assume you're working for Blizzard, CCP, or any of the other competing companies?  Impossible to find a full group for quests?  You couldn't be more wrong.  The problem currently is that I simply have too many people wanting to group, hence why people are requesting the group sizes be increased.
    - its not a very popular game and has a very bad image, since the company sony online entertainement does not care much about its fans and their feedback of how the game should be
It's not WoW popular but I wouldn't say it's that bad off population wise.  Chapter 6 & 7 have brought back a large chunk of people to the game, and made it appealing to many that have never played it before.
Player based content has actually been improved with the introduction of Storyteller.  People can design their own events.  Essentially, you can decorate an area in the game just like you can in a house.
    - the customer support is terrible, because the employes make a very incompetent impression when it comes to live chat support for example (ingame support says ask the live chat support, live chat support says ask the ingame gms)
It all depends how you talk to them.  If you wrote to them in the same manner as your post in this thread then no, don't expect much help.  If you're polite and give exact details of the problem then you won't have too many issues with the CSRs.  I know I don't ;)

It's always been my experience that the best time I've had in any MMO was one in which I was apart of from the beginning. I like being there from the start so I can help develop a community early on.

I'd personally be concerned about going into a game nearly 4 1/2 years after launch, as I like being a pioneer rather then a follower.

These are just my feelings though, and others I'm sure will feel differently.

  • daarcodaarco Member UncommonPosts: 4,276

    You really should try SWG.

Its the best MMO i have played so far...and i have tryed them all.

One of the best character creation features in a MMO.....city building, lightsabers and its not fantasy : )

  • One word:

    Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

SWG lost what made it a great game 2 years ago.

And even if you got into it and liked it, it doesn't matter, the game is very likely to be closed in the next few months.

Not worth it. No. Don't play it. Or, play a free trial, but the game is not worth paying actual money for.

If you want to play WoW, play WoW, at least that game works. Don't need to play SWGWoW-NGE.

And please ignore the shills that are trying to get anyone to play in their now mostly empty game. Names need not be mentioned.

  • HellCasterHellCaster Member UncommonPosts: 234

I played SWG back when it was first released. Then they turned a game everyone loved into what it is now today, a game of pathetic proportions where myself and everyone i used to play with in SWG avoids it like a plague.

And they have the audacity to call it the "New Game Experience".

Tabula Rasa is an awsome Sci-Fi game, in my opinion it is of far greater worth then SWG will ever be <UNLESS> SOE wises up and releases classic pre-CU pre-NGE servers, which we know will never happen because that would require them to admit they were wrong and that would violate their dogma.

Playing: varies every day it seems.

  • KazaraKazara Member UncommonPosts: 1,086

If you are a station Access Pass holder, you may consider forking over the one time $20 to add it to your pass, but if not, I strongly suggest you get a free trial first. Also ask your self how important a player community is to you and if you want to play a game long term that is well supported. If so, SWG is not the game for you.

SWG has had minimal improvements since being completely gutted two years ago by sweeping, unwanted, changes implemented by $OE. The worst part (and on going) of the disaster was the loss of well over 200k players, leaving most of the servers as barren ghost towns. So the currently active 25k or so players may very well enjoy SWG for what ever reason, but the 'Playing Majority' left long ago, never to return. $OE has has a bad history of poor customer service, questionable business ethics (at best) and serious lack of intelligent management which compounds the SWG problem.

You should also know that the game is on 'maIntanence mode' and will never be getting anymore expansions nor will it be getting any upgrades. The watered down, grind fest,  lack-luster content comes several months apart and constant smaller changes tend to negate players' efforts. After two years since the big changes implemented by $OE, there is very little to show for it.

If you are looking for a sci-fi game go for Tabula Rasa!! It's a fast paced combat RPG that is very fun!

If I were you I would go get a grape fruit, put it in a pillow case and promptly beat my self about the head and neck instead of buying SWG. :)

Just a little friendly advice from your uncle Cal. Seriously though, save your self they headache and your money.

  • Yeah, I am afraid that when SOE and LEC announce their divorce (and the shutdown of SWG) in the next few months we will need to send help to Obraik.  We wouldn't want him hurting himself.

He's just as much a victim of SOE as we are.  The difference being that we chose to fight back, whereas Obi came down with "Stockholm Syndrome".

    Obraik.

Obraik has SOE bedcover in his bedroom. He also has "I love NGE SWG" posters in his rooms. If 350.000 people say "its wrong" then Obraik steps into the light and says, you are ALL totaly wrong, I know better, its right..."

Obraik is something that is known as a fanboi.

    Description: Fanboi:

"Someone who is hopelessly devoted to something and will like anything associated with thier particular thing."

    also know as:

"A person who posts in internet forums with a bigger signature than what he posts. Signature sometimes contain full computer specs, 1-2 images (that contain the LOGO for the company/game/other the person is a fanboi of)"

    Alternate of fanboy.

"You must be either retarded or a fanboi."

I hope Obraik doesnt take it too personal :)

I know he is an alright guy when it does not come to NGE-SWG.

Yes, it's true I'm a fan of the game...I wouldn't be posting here if I wasnt, so well done on that observation ;)  However, do note that SWG is the only SOE game that I enjoy, I don't play any of their other games nor do I have any desire to try them.

On the flipside, you could be labeled as a hater:

"A label applied to people who are more negative than positive when discussing another person. It most commonly refers to individuals whose negativity is so extreme that it is all-consuming. However, there are various levels and forms of being a hater, ranging from completely dismissing any positive traits or actions, to merely painting a less than flattering picture by using words with negative connotations. Hating is often attributed to jealousy, but just as often, it seems to stem from some other source."

You know, Obraik, I can appreciate that you like the game so much and that you bring alot to your community. That's a rarity these days in SWG IMO. However, your enthusiasm I believe can be misleading to some potential players just as much as the negative opinions can be.

You take it upon yourself to deflect much of the critisim of SWG, when in fact it could be valuble information to potential subscribers in knowing the past and the mistakes made. Without knowing the past we are doomed to repeat it, or so the saying goes.

I think it's important for people to be constantly reminded that by subscribing and supporting SWG is a potentially dangerous thing because for SWG to be successful now is to justify a very dangerous precedent.

All of us, regardless of our views on the NGE and SWG, should be concerned over this. We have no rights as consumers so long as that tagline remains on the games we buy - "Gameplay may change" And I have to stress that point - games we buy. I think what happened here to SWG should be a wake up call to the industry and it's consumers.

  • I am a SOE "hater".  I will freely admit it rather than obfuscate like the fanbois do.  I wasn't a "hater" of them until the CUNGE, until the lies, the fraud, and them taking my game away and refusing to give it back.  I have an agenda, and that is to be an agitator, a constant reminder of the wrongs that they have done, in hopes that I can influence others and harm the company.  My goal IS the cessation of SOE as a commercial entity.  And all I have to do to achieve this is to use their own actions and history, not make anything up.  Fact of the matter if they hadn't DONE the CUNGE they'd never have been in this position.

Judging by their sagging subscriber numbers across ALL their games (not just SWG) seems to me I am far from alone.  You can only piss on your customers so much before bad things start happening to your company, especially when your whole revenue stream depends on people making the decision to buy your product every month...

SOE's chickens haven't so much come home to roost as flew the coop.  We'll see a lot more of this in 2008 when POTBS and other new SOE branded or associated titles sink rapidly into Davey Jones's locker.

Check out the free trial and give it a spin.

You may like the game.  Especially since you don't have the burden of having played it over two years ago and have comparisons to make.

Just go in with your eyes open and understand that SOE and LA are not honest in their dealings.

CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

    Obraik,

I am glad you like SWG and I am glad you have found a game that will help you pass your free time and I must also say that I somewhat agree with Suvroc on this.

The only thing I want to add is LA also has a huge blame in this as well.

Would I try this game or even think about giving SOE and LA my money??.. I can answer No to this because I have been around SWG from beta. Like a lot of people here, they talk bad about SOE and LA because they "Have been there" and they know very well what SOE and LA have done to their customers and I can tell you that SWG has lost a HUGE, HUGE, number of its player base due to bad customer service, the NGE, the lack of putting anything in to this game, and not working with its current player base.

So, from a player who has been around SWG from beta,.. I can say.. No, I would not try this game. It's really up to you but I will say,... by giving your money to SOE and LA,.. Suvroc is right,...   you show your support for the way SOE and LA have handled things and trust me,... the way they handle themselfs when it comes to SWG,... is not good at all.

Obraik,.. I am glad that you show your support,.. but for every person you show me who like SWG the way it is,... I can show you 10 others who hate the way SWG is now.  If you have been around SWG from beta Obraik,... you also know as well as I do,...  this game does not have the player base it once did and thats not because of how old the game is. You know the reasons and it's VERY hard to sit and try and defend SOE and LA,.. I am glad to see that you are trying to defend this game, but trust me....  it's to late.

    Been there done that:

thats a very important point and I thank you for posting that...

of course we swg veterans maybe "push to hard" on the NGE thing sometimes, the game we lost is not our main point of why we do all of this...

the main point is that we want to put a sign for gaming companies like SOE, we want to let them know that its not always just about the money you get, you have to take care about your damn customers...

you have to listen to them or you will suffer what we do on mmorpg.com each day, we fight back and keep on telling every potential customer of what you have done to us...

and I think thats the damn point and why WE veterans are so frustrated about SOE.

and Obraik, you really need to understand that.... we hope that you support us at least a little about that, because we all are gamers like you..

and we veterans have a responsibility to keep on telling of what happened to us and even after 2 years we still dont feel understood by Sony Online Entertainement..

I hope those who say "get over it" understand now that its not only about getting over it... our goal is something else... to put a sign...

All depends on your playstyle, Try the trial and if you like it buy it. You won't get any straight answers from this forum, just flames and negative feedback. I myself like the game, as do many. Just try it for yourself, you don't need opinions.
