Level based question

StellosStellos Member UncommonPosts: 1,491

First off I want to state that I wish AoC was skill-based, but since they want to follow the power house of WoW and go level based can someone tell me if they are going to broadcast people's levels and mobs levels (i.e. having levels #s over head or in status bar)?

Mob levels or people wont be over their heads, it looks from recent videos to be in the area where it displays opponents health, stamina etc.

This might also be something that you can turn off in the game ;)

You know that WoW was hardly the first game to use levels as a basis of advancement don't you?  I'll assume you do.

Believe it or not 'skill-based' advancement is just another form of level advancement.  It is just not define as well.  Take Eve for example.  Here is a purely skill-based advancement system (and a well done one at that since newbie characters can become competitive with 3 year old characters in just a few months of game play).  This game has no levels in it.  Instead of being asked what level you are, you get asked how any skill points you have.  Corporations (guilds) have minimum number of skill points to enter instead of a minimum level to join.

It is the same basic thing - only the terminology changes.

Yes I know WoW wasn't the first, but they are the most popular and it makes other developers jealous -- seeking the WoW pie sort of speak.  My main point is, I don't like it when the game takes all the guess work out of the game.  I don't think mobs and other players should have viewable levels, it just makes the game more childlike.  Getting into a brawl with someone who is much higher because you made the mistake that they were wereing sloppy clothes to be weak is the essense of PvP for me.  I suppose that was the key factor to UO back in the day because nobody knew how tough a guy really was.  There were certain things that experienced players could pick up on that they would know the guy probably is a beast in sheep's clothing, but for those who couldn't -- it was death.  People are far more polite when it is skill based and you can't see what a guy is cabable of by looking at his status bar.

Trust me, eventually we will all learn what level of what class can beat what level of another class.  At this point it is played by numbers and not skill.

Levels aren't there to replace skill, they're just a way of advancing your character. The game is still skill-based. You're likely to spend most of your time at level 80, so mainly you'll be playing with and against other people that are the same level you are anyways.. If levels were the only measure of skill, endgame would be really horrible :)

Now, I haven't played EVE, but from what I gather you have different ships, some that are better than others.. They're a way of "advancing" yourself, like levels, except you can't loose levels..

If you're able to learn what level and what class you're able to beat, the system isn't skillbased, it's based on balance between classes.. Hopefully any class can beat any other, based on skill not what your class is capable of..
