Is this a true MMO?

I don't want to try it if it's instanced like Guild Wars. I am looking for a seamless world, not a multiplayer version of a single box game.

Don't try it then. It's exactly like Diablo II.

That depends on what a "true" MMO is,

However, if you don't like instancing, then this game isn't for you.   Good luck elsewhere.

You will like Tabula Rasa better RED =)

Do NOT buy Tabula Rasa if you want to play a game. I've tried for 6 stinking hours to try and log on to their servers!!! I'ts an absolute joke. It was the same in Beta as it is now.  I'm mad at myself for buying the bloody game, I should have known better.

Glad i came here and got the heads up on Hellgate too.

  • salamander13salamander13 Member Posts: 100

I love Tabula Rasa ..its one of the most fun games Ive ever played. (MMO or otherwise) I have never had a problem logging in nor have I heard others saying that they had problems logging in.

HG is nothing like what one would call an MMO .. it is a fun single player game though.

  • ram3oram3o Member Posts: 134

I wouldnt call this a mmo because 90% of people dont  group.

LoL, your first post, and you post something like this....

I am really enjoying the game, but it's not an MMO.  It barely even supports multiplayer.  As a single player game, I recommend it.  I certainly wouldn't recommend subscribing... I can't even really recommend spending 50 bucks for it... but if is pretty fun.

If that's your criteria, then a very big percentage of the games on this website won't meet it.  The vast majority of people solo.

Well you must not play any of the MMO's on this site then because the vast majority of people I know group in these games.  Sure there are a few that solo, but not that many.  Play some of the games that have some content.

Hellgate is a Diablo clone, everything is instanced except for the hubs.  So no, it is not a MMO.   Fun game though, just not up to the standards we would expect from an ex-diablo team.

I can't believe this is actually on this website, it is no way a MMORPG. Its not even close like Guild Wars...Oh well, must have paid a bunch to be on here.

HG:L is a single player game that can also be played co-op.  As such it is an addictive and enjoyable game (albeit currently buggy) that you will pretty much like exactly as much as you liked Diablo II.  It is not, by any stretch of the imagination, an MMO, and don't let anyone tell you differently.
Fortunately for me, I liked Diablo II quite a bit.
    What he said.

It's like GW, only with even more instances, less 'multiplayer' and much less 'massive'.

Good co-op rpg though...until you finish it.

With the introduction to some of the future content this game will have. It will deserve a spot on mmorpg.com.

With FURY making it to this website, why not HGL.

A game being packed with features doesn't make it an MMO when 'being massively multiplayer' isn't one of those features.

Don't get me wrong, It's a good game.  I haven't played anything else since it came out.... but I have spent 100% of my time playing alone.

  • NewMonsterNewMonster Member Posts: 417

Tabula Rasa is more of a true mmo than Hellgate.

    Hellgate = Light MMO

Tabula Rasa = Medium MMO (as heard max 300 players in main map)

Vanguard  = Heavy MMO aka True MMO

    Fury/Guild Wars = PVP MMO

im more interest in Tabula Rasa than hellgate...... tried hellgate demo and wasnt what I expected for it to be.

Umm...what relevance do those points have to when defining an MMO exactly?

HELLGATE IS A MMO BECAUSE IT HAS A STORY!!! OMG...well guess what, so did doom.

    Here's my MMO checklist:

    Is it MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER?

Does it have a PERSISTENT WORLD?

& in my experience HGL has neither of these, and works much the same was as Diablo did - so why isn't Diablo on the list? or NWN? Hell...why not doom or quake world?

    Seriously

you say its not even close like guild wars...whats the difference? guild wars is populated cities, single player(if not partied) world to explore. the same thing as hellgate. theyre adding pvp tournaments and such in time as well. the only difference i see is the option to subscribe, which in time will give players an economy feel(auction houses, etc.)

for those considering Tabula Rasa I would suggest waiting at least 6 months until they are out of the pay-to-test beta stage and have actually delivered on their promises - right now its just not worth the cash

as for Hellgate - yup, buggier than a moscow hotel room in the cold war, blows up on me constantly, but is still the most fun I've had in ages

  • baphametbaphamet Member RarePosts: 3,311

no it isn't an mmo, its pretty fun though imo

OR, it could - just possibly - be that many of our readers begged us to include Hellgate: London on our site.

Hellgate is very much like Guild Wars. It has hubs where you can interact with others, and it has instanced missions where the only people around are you and your group.

a mmorpg is a mmorpg. i want coverage of unreal here, i dont see how that justifies including it tho. next youll be listing fantasy sports games since you play the role of a manager and interact online with other owners?

sites like ign etc. cover ALL games , shit i bet 95% of us want porn flicks covered here also. it destroys your credibility to cover a game like this on this site (tho not as much as say hosting ads that say lotro is a outstanding and hugely popular game). do one thing and do it well or dont bother.

HGL is every bit the mmorpg that any fantasy sports game is.

Unfortunately for you, you can't please all the people all of the time.

You can stretch the meaning of basically anything to include whatever you want, but most people can tell the difference between Hellgate and porn. Unreal is certainly not even close to an MMORPG, although the engine has been used to develop some.

I'm sure you can ask that we include porn coverage, but I doubt your wish will be fufilled.

As I understand it, Guild Wars was close close enough to a true MMORPG that we included it. Hellgate: London is almost identical in function, if not form, to GW and many people that frequent our site asked that it be included. I'm sure some of the fulltime employees have more insight on the inclusion, but that's it in a nutshell.

Actually, if you look in our FAQ, I'm pretty sure our criteria is listed there.

     Ah, found it.

I think there is a game that needs to be added to your list. How do I submit this?

First, please make sure that the game is not already on our list.  If you know the name of the game, make sure you sort our list by "Title" (click on the Title column name) and look for it alphabetically.

Second, make sure that it completes our definition of a MMORPG:

    • 500 or more simultaneous players in one world.
      • The game must include some form of graphical common area. This distinction means Diablo II is not considered an MMORPG, while Guild Wars is.
    • It must be graphical...so no text based MUDs.
    • Persistent characters.
    • Some form of character advancement.
    • It must use a true client/server connection.  In other words, no HTML or "web" based games.  Games that run in a browser using Java are OK.
    • Five or more screenshots from inside of the game engine itself.
    • A professional web site free of annoying pop-up ads or Spyware programs and access to some kind of support system.
    • Must fully support English.  This means the client interface, in-game chat, help system and support website must all be in English.

NOTE: At this time we are no longer adding 2D/Isometric games to our list - we will add these again at a later date once we adapt our list to allow feature filtering.

If the game fails to meet any of these criteria, we do not include it on MMORPG.com. Occasionally, we will cover high profile games that have not yet met the screenshot criteria, but they will still not be included in the “Game List”.

Ultimately, MMORPG.com reserves the right of final judgment on whether or not a game should or should not be added to our game list.

If you know a game that meets all of the criteria listed above, please email it to editor@mmorpg.com.

It's not worth spending money for it. I mean, it's gameplay is not like an MMORPG. Then, why play it? We all know that only MMORPGs are good stuff!
