I will be entering the glaxay of Tubala Rasa next month, it seems that this game is what Smed really wanted the NGE to be. So I shall try it after hearing many good things about it, if I enjoy it and have fun I'll subscribe. If I subscribe I shall get the extra satisfaction that I'm paying for what Smed wanted SWG to be, the more players TR gets the more it must hurt Smed and the more it must hurt the NGE. Perhaps TR will lay so much pain by draining the NGE playerbase Smed will be forced to rollback to Pre-CU or pull the plug?

You may call me small minded and petty but it was the evil of Smed that twisted and warped the very fibre of my humanity to such a degree I no longer recognise the face in the mirror. I wish to know what the council of Veterans thinks of my plan and who will join my crusade into TR with a three fold mission,

1: To destroy the playerbase of the NGE and force a rollback or closure.

2: To have fun in TR and destroy the Bane.

3: To PWN noobs!

Who is with me?

I am in doubt, agricola1. Clouded the future has become. Probes sent to the Bioware system in the Outer Rim have been inconclusive. Summon the RL investigators we must !

I would go back to SWG before paying a subscription for TR.  SWG is actually better imo.  If you are looking for something similar to pre-cu then  there is nothing out there that will meet your needs.

You really need to get out more my friend.   Perhaps stop playing MMO's completely, as it appears that they are effecting your mental wellbeing.

I voted no to the poll.

TR will never be an alternative to SWG simply because the two dont have much in common.  Yes TR has nice up to date graphics, but its repetitive, non-socialable, and down right boring after 15 levels.  Trust me I tried it in beta.

If you are looking for a quick fix alternative to single player shoot-em up's then TR is your game.   TR's world feels shallow and not alive.  Its just a battlefield hub surrounded by battlefield instances.  There isn't a living, breathing world with a civilisation in it.  Its nice to look at, dont get me wrong.  But it misses some of the typical MMO aspects that make other games so attractive.

Lastly, if SOE were even going to consider rolling back SWG that time has long since past.  Forget it, move on.   Until another MMO comes out to directly challenge what SWG had and has now, then SWG will be its only competitor on the Sci-fi MMO market.  No others currently in development will come close yet.

I found the above review from one of the staff writers here at MMORPG to be a very good read.  I saw some features I think I'd like in the game (fighting for control points) and some features I know I wouldn't like (trying to manually target friends with heals).   I remember one of the  early NGE frustrations was trying to manually target friends as a medic--oi that is so not fun.

If you're thinking about the game and want to get a good objective review, I'd recommend the link.

P.S.  the link doesn't seem to be "linking."  Copying and pasting the line into your web browser works fine though :)

I beta tested TR, to me it seems too shallow of a game for an MMO but I'm sure Richard Garriot will improve that sooner or later, and the interation is alot like WoW's but the FPS style is what people compare with the NGE. IMO if you want to compare that to the NGE, then i would say TR's way of doing is about 50x better than NGE's, no ugly blue/green target box and a much better over-the-shoulder zoom.

I may buy this game someday but not now, and I know it won't keep me any longer than 2-3 months since I'd get tired of it pretty fast.

City of Heroes/Villains was my best replacement after the NGE but I'm kind of burnt out on it right now.

Ya after Beta testing TR, that game is really not so great. Especially when you reach lv30, wow nothing but grinding and repetivness.

  • LinnaLinna Member Posts: 387

I voted no. The game is boring and repetitive. I tried all classes, got my highest to 36 before I couldn't bring myself to log in anymore. Hubby made it to 13. I have a high boredom treshhold (hey, I DID have a jedi pre-CU).

Im actually surprised at the number of SWG players who dislike TR. before its release I thought it would  be a nice refuge for SWG players.

IM sorry to hear that it isnt.

Was that TR or the NGE or both?

Just kidding, I know you mean TR but probably both since you're posting here! I quit just before the CU because I had a really bad feeling after Jump to Lagspeed and they wouldn't release any info on the CU. My GF kept playing until the NGE then she went apeshit, she had a jedi too and was not happy.

Well I'll be off to start a new life in TR, I know I need to get out more but they won't unlock my door unless I'm wearing the white coat that ties up at the back.

TR is worse than SWG:NGE. No content, thoughtless button mashing, and no community.

I tested TR in beta. All it succeeded in doing was make me want to reactivate my SWG account....

i so much agree there is nothing out there that was or is better then SWG/PRE-CU  hands down

TR is not an MMORPG, it's an MMOFPS. There is absolutely no adventure in it. Just battles. Tres boring for those looking for a SWG replacement.

I think a large part of the negative reaction to TR (and there is alot), is the brand association with Garriot himself. He should have realized that he is a brand himself, one that says complexity, economy, and basically everything that SWG gleaned from UA that we pre-cu vets loved.

Many Garriot fans are jumping into TR expecting the usual Garriot game design and are quite disappointed to find it's just not there. The folks at NCSoft pump it out under the Garriot name and then can't understand why they get all the negative reviews. It's funny with all the marketing genious at these big studios these days and they can't understand the friggen basics.

To sum up, TR is not a terrible MMOFPS (it's not that good either), it's just in no way comparable to SWG, pre-cu, or sadly, even the NGE. Even the NGE carries a little bit of the pre-cu depth with it (ie: social commands such as 'dance' or 'sit' or 'air guitar'). In TR you get to blow sh*t up, that's about it.

Funnily enough, thats exactly what I did.

However, I suppose watching Episode 4: A New Hope may have had something to do with that too hehehe.

C''MON MMO DEVS!!!  SWG NEEDS A COMPETITOR!!!

Give us a ground pounding / space combat sci-fi MMO with plenty of social interaction and a semi-decent graphics engine and you'll be onto a winner!

Put it in a familar lore setting e.g. Star Wars, SGW or Firefly (yes there is an MMO being developed) and you'll be laughing all the way to the bank!

My god, listen to yourselves all talking about re-subing to the NGE rather than TR. If you had to choose one or the other are you really all telling me you'd rather your money went to the evil Darth Smedley?

You have become weak, once your hate made you strong and powerfull, but now you have lost that strength. Now you sit there snivelling for your PRE-CU and discussing how you'd give your hard earned cash to Darth Smed before you'd hand it over to Master Garriot (look at Garriot's hair it even reminds me of Obi-Wan!).

I would burn in hell before subscribing to SWG again and a couple of years ago you were the same, but now I feel the influence of the darkside on the weak minded of us. All of you that expressed a desire to return to SWG should go crawl back to Smed now and grovel on your bellys like worms for forgivness. I shall continue my crusade against his evil influence with any who wish to join me and the AFS,

Speaking of which I remember going to the store to pick up ToOW  in November of '05. I was disappointed to discover that it was only available as a download, as I like having hard copies of the games and expansions I buy.

I remember thinking how odd it was that there was a retail version of RotW but not of ToOW.

It all made sense to me 2 days later.

Yeah as far as I know JTL was the only expansion for SWG available in package, ROTW and ToOW were both digi download and if you didn't want the digi download you had to go buy the whole game again (TTE and NGE boxes).

Now I heard they're not even packaging the game anymore, it's only avail through direct2drive from what I've seen. I've been around my town and haven't found one box yet, my local EB games won't even order game cards.

Could be but I would have it if I found it, I had to buy the TTE box to add the expansion. What's funny now is that if I install using the original SWG CDs I bought in 2003 doesn't work and I have to use the TTE or NGE install CDs for the patch download to work (and for some reason my CD drive doesn't like either of the newer CDs). I found a workaround with the 2003 CDs is to install the downloaded trial version as well.

I agree with who ever edited that post and filled em all in with SWG-NGE (and just in general... nice.)

  • ShiloFieldsShiloFields Member Posts: 252

I voted no.  Perhaps I am wrong, but my understading is that TR is like Guild Wars, it is not even a MMORPG.

Although it doesn't make a mockery of Star Wars like SWG, purely in terms of featurs TR is worse than SWG even in its current labotomized state.

  • wizyywizyy Member UncommonPosts: 629

Sorry my friend, I bought the game and it did hold my attention for good 2 days.

Never will I log in to TR again.

Gave it to a friend who played it... for 3 days lol
