I just don't feel involved. It's hard to pick a single element that alludes to this feeling, and it seems it's a combination of many. Perhaps the unfamiliar controls have added to this dilemma, but I feel too far away from combat to really be immersed. If any of you have played Hellgate: London, perhaps you could understand what I mean by feeling involved. I seem to always be in direct contact with the enemy, and am immersed in the constant stimulus of combat in that game. In Tabula, it just feels strange and awkward, and doesn't directly feel like I am immersed in combat. For me, this really makes or breaks the game. If I cannot bring myself to be submerged in the mobs I'm fighting, it just feels unfinished and unaffected. Though, all of this may be a side affect for my extreme hatred of Tabula's inability to display Dynamic Lights and a real form of AA. Jaggies are hideous.

HmmI dont know...combat gets very chaotic on a large scale on regular basis in TR..I sometimes feel too involved. Have you tried getting up close and personal with a shotty?
Immersion is what you get when REALLY getting into the game, for example, was fighting some Xanx and nearby where a couple of Boars roaming, suddenly 3 of those boars ...i thought came at me ...but they didn't ...they attcked the Xanx...must be a natural enemy of Boards, same thing happend when some Fithlins sort of helped me against some Xanx, or was fighting Thrax and those Fithlins attacked those Thrax aswell, which helped weakining their armor cause of hte lighting skills those nasty flying crits blast.
Running arond you will see and notice many of the wildlife ...living their own lifes, also the ammount of action is so far unheard and never seen combat this involved for a PVE centric game. Try using different type of combo's , make sure you understand your skills, by reading them (mouse over them to read the info)
Also not sure if you notice'd but there are more options when you set Video Quality on Custom..see screenshot.
Well I hope your using your melee ability (F button), because I raised up my hand to hand all the way, and whenever I melee with my weapon it makes my enemy go flying back like a baseball.
Also commandos get rush abilitys, along with staves later on, swords for spys.
So if your looking for more in your face action you just gotta play for a while, and use melee for now.

I haven't played long, but got to level 15 now. I think combat is nice and very active, but it has some problems.
Problems are that combat is little too much about stand and shoot until one of You die. Also even as You can use tactics, what is very nice, the dead systems makes combat feeling really bad. Because dead has not meaning at all in this game. With this kind of dead penalty system, there is no point to try avoid dead. I mean You stats can have 60% drops and You can still be in combat fine, because it's all about You gear and attacks. If You have good armour and weapons, You can continue You battle from dead in 30 seconds. Like doing self destructive attacks in battle ground. Of cause it's not most efficient way to do combat, but all this cause some kind, lack of danger to the combat. Players doesn't really need to be careful at all in there, if they don't want to.
How ever even if I say so, Tabula Rasa has very nice active combat. Little like in City of Heroes, but different. The ability cover has nice touch and range shooting is fun.

I am very sorry you dont feal immersed, i got to level 15 went into an instance with 2 other people, and we kicked ass, had fun, and started roleplaying for no apperent reason and little funny crap like the Heaveiest RPing ive seen since Earth and Beyond. if thats not immersion i dont know what is. after that we ran arround finding small scale conflicst and ahnialated everything then we came across 3 patroling predators. they killed my squad mates and i guenuinly got pissed off and started firing wialdly at the predator took one out then died. I cant believe i was so focused and immersed.... it was awsome
Sarge:Give me a Boost!

Um... TR has a deferred lighting graphics engine that looks pretty amazing at the right settings. And if you don't feel immersed in TR's combat then you are not playing the game. So please go somewhere else with your veiled attempt to troll.

OP most folk complain the opposite of you. They state HG:L has distant uninvolved combat. TR puts you in the think of it and never stops ,if you keep near some bane. Really im being honest but i dont get it at all how you feel removed from the combat.
Maybe its cause its guns or something? have you tried setting keyboard layout to MMO instead of fps btw? I find it easier and makes more sense to me than the other way round.
Sometimes, I actually get annoyed that I have to wade through formation after formation of Bane when all I'm trying to do is run from point A to point B.
Hence, why I'm going ranger/sniper.
"Combat feels distant" ??
If anything, I'd have to complain that there is NO distance from combat, I feel like I'm always under attack! Which, I guess is the point: You're suppose to feel you are part of a constant and massive war, and I think they've nailed that down perfectly.
The OP has no basis in the argument, a mere fact that you can't really afk anywhere besides non-CP bases in TR world says it's very involving.
And really, try taking over a control point by yourself, not involving? Yeah right.
The OP specifically stated that he could not pin down his feelings as to why TR does not feel immersive; hence, he didn't provide a detailed breakdown. I don't think it was the intention of the original poster to make a negative claim against the game, but rather to bring up an issue that he thought was troubling. While I don't agree with the OP's claim myself, I can understand that he somehow feels detached from the game - I don't there's any solution to this, other than to play the game more and see if he simply needed more time to get used to the style of the game play.
LOL!!! Just one post and its about "how cool combat is in HGL, and combat in TR sucks" kind of post!!! Man...you Fanboys are geting pretty desesperate! Just ignore him.
Um, could the reason why combat feels so distant...
...is because most combat occurs at a distance?
I mean, this is a game where most classes rely on guns, you know.
Ranged combat can still be pretty intense, as TR has proven. I am one to believe that a lot of MMORPG players have gotten too used to the visceral feeling of melee combat that most fantasy-based MMO's place so much emphasis on. But TR has melee-oriented classes and combat, too.
I believe you nailed it down nicely. Really, it's just stand there and shoot till the other thing dies. Tactics which are not skill-based (there's a lot of cool options in higher levels, of course) are practically non-existent. For all the talk about taking cover and whatnot, the devs kinda forgot to implement those options out in the world and even in the instances (they did put some rocks and trenches... but is that enough?). It's all great when you're out there and don't notice it, mainly because you're too busy shooting, but when you're past the beginning and the somewhat chaotic feeling of combat wears off, making you want to try different angles and approaches, your options for tactics are reduced to class-based skills and abilities.
There aren't enough options in the instances available to try out "tactics". What good is pulling a cave patrol into an ambush at the entrance if getting in and just shooting them with your whole team has the exact same effect, without all the hassle? Things like these need to be resolved in order to better achieve the huge potential TR's combat has, IMO.
