Are Melee classes tolerable?

Hi,

I have a lvl 35 heretic on Gareth, so I have some idea as to what playing a casting class is like in DAOC. While the heretic is very versitile and fun, It is hard for me to get absorbed into the game when itemization is so lame. Who cares about buying the next mace or cloth clothing? For this reason, I'd like to roll an armored melee class. They look rather dull when grouping with them, however, and the lack of a dash skill like in WOW seems to diminish their value in PVP. It would be nice to be able to buy cool armor and weapons though. So the question is, are melee classes tolerable to play in DAOC, or are they nerfed, slow, and boring?

There are lots of nice items for casters - and all classes.  Just not much available below level 50 - at least not worth the trouble to get it.

Second, there are more cool items if you have the ToA expansion, so this means not playing classic.

Third, most of DAOC is based off of distance.  So in keep sieges, tanks have little to do besides run siege weapons.  You can also climb the walls and fight now or build a siege ladder to get inside.  The issue is that tanks are always at a disadvantage to other classes because they lack distance.

So, most people that enjoy tanks to the 8 v 8 gambit.  That way you can get into quick battles and actually use your skills.

Tanks can sprint to close the distance, or use certain abilities like "charge" to close the gap.  Melee classes have some awsome styles to use and it is very fun to fight tank v tank.  You might prefer a hybrid melee class to a pure tank.  Vamps, maulers, wardens, mercenary, skald, thane might be good choices.

The last toon I played was a Warrior.  I got him to 50 and spent most of my time finding solo people to kill.  Given that I was a lower RR then most of the people out there I think I did pretty damn well.  At rank 3 I was able quite often to kill people 2 ranks above me but that required a good playermade suit of armor, my own enchantment template and pretty much all my weapons and items were custom made for me and my playstile.  Getting to that point takes some time.  You have to figure out how you like to play and then make your own suit of armor and weapons according to your needs in those situation.

You will never get the same spiky shoulders that WoW used to offer you.  DAoC was never really about the next loot or geting that super glowing sword of the screaming monkey.

Like the guy above me said.  If you go play on the ToA servers you can get items that will morph you into a wolf or an undead thing, and have a bunch of wacky and different effects.  So if you're interested in that stuff go check it out.

Before I left, DAoC had a patch that enabled most tanks to scale walls in keeps to allow you to go up on the ramparts and fight on the wall without the aid of ladders or blowing a hole in the wall.  I personally enjoyed my warrior in solo play.  I'd often go out on my own to the alb fronteer and kill the people that strayed too far or were farming or pl'ing people out int he pvp zone.  The were fair game and would often bring others whom I would fight to further enhance my fun.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
