With all of the recent games switching to F2P do you think it is time for Dark Age of Camelot to do the same?
What if Mythic implemented either game advertising with an option to subscribe to get rid of said advertising or an item shop.
The item shop could include potions to increase XP gain. Maybe even the ability to purchase things such as Epic armor, Champ XP, etc. As long as they did not allow you to purchase Realm Ranks I don't think using an Item shop would be unbalancing to the game.
I do know that if the game went F2P and had a modest advertising campaign promoting the change to F2P the game would become quite popular. The game mechanics are quite sound already and the game itself has a ton of great ideas the only main plague it has is the low population.
So what do you guys think?
Currently playing:

I don't think its a good idea for 2 reasons:
1: The first reason is more heart than mind: I want DAoC to grow again, and I believe that it would be the beginning of the end of the game if they went F2P... Lower income means less dev work etc
2: F2P mostly attract kids that before couldnt pay the monthly bills - and I am not fond of playing my MMO with 10-year-old kids. I was in a guild where we were not supposed to use swear words because someone had her 9-year-old daughter playing once in a while....I accidentally said the word ASS in a sentence and was told to apologize! LOL -I even said ARSE, not ASS.....kiddies in MMOes is not for me. Mature audience please.
Agree with your first point. Second point I disagree with.
I was in a guild, when I was 13, with a bunch of 25-30 year olds. Vent was racial slurs and cursing, and guild chat was "dude I'm so wasted." I was in that guild for a whole 10 min...I am not fond of playing my mmo with 20-year-old stoners and losers.
See? the extremes can go both ways. Yes, f2p may attract a bit of a younger audience, but DAOC does not need to go F2P. It's making money. Maybe when WAR comes out, Mythic will make it F2P. Since the two share a lot in common.,
Same I agree with him if the game goes F2P that when this game goes down the drain. We will be lucky to get a update if any customer support. You need money to maintain a good game if its F2P then its not a good game its just something that was threw on the market.

It is not the extremes that bother people it is the averages. The average teenage player is going to be much worse for a community to have than your average 30 year old. Your statement can be read as saying that teenagers wanting to play F2P games and adults who are paying for a game are on the same maturity level and it is just the extremes of both groups. That just is not the case.
Also, it is not that there are stoners or people using adult content that is necessarily the issue with younger players. It is how they communicate, how they play, how they treat other players, their priorities, their conversational topics, etc. It might be a group of adults might be open to discussing "adult content" or they may want to talk about their job, kids, college, etc. A 14 yr old dealing with his first crush just is not going to fit in. If a community starts to be filled with those kids, then it is no longer just a few in guilds, but it is running into them all over the game.
If 30 yr olds do not hang out at middle school in real life, then why would they want to do that in a game? Sure there may be a few young kids that if given the chance in certain social settings things might work out, but if a place (or a game) becomes flooded with them, the adults are likely to move on to another game.
Also WAR will be nothing like DAOC. For those wanting DAOC 2, the closest in game development will be AoC.
I think a smart tactic for Mythic to do is give away DAOC accounts to all those who have WAR accounts. That way, when people begin to tire of WAR they can holiday in DAOC until they are ready to return to WAR once more. Mythic keeps the customers, and the players have more than one game to play with an account. Win Win

Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
It's not going to happen. DAoC is going to dwindle and die, as much as I hate to say it. The damage has been done, and the playerbase has been lost. I can't even imagine anything that could bring players back. However, if they released a sequel (much like eq2) I think a lot of the veteran community would return at least for nostalgia. I know I would.

Hahahahahhahaha

But to answer the question, Personally I would love for it to go F2P, thats the only reason I can't play it now, I'm 16 with no income and strict parents :X I used to play this game a lot when my dad payed for it, it was truely a great game! RvR was a lot of fun(Even at my low level of 20 something <_<) I miss my Theurgist T-T... But, as another said, F2P would bring in all the little kids and cause other problems.
So, in short, my answer is Personally: Yes
However, for the good of the game: No
I think free "cannon fodder" accounts, sort of like what they did in Planetside might liven things up a bit. Maybe cap them at realm rank 1 or something. The problem I see is that you need players at 50 for them to help populations in RvR, and it takes weeks to get a toon up to that level. So adding in some sort of F2P accounts wouldn't immediatly help that much.
In any case, from all I have heard the game is still supporting itself pretty well on subs.
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.
