Looking for a replacement space game.

AzureProwerAzurePrower Member UncommonPosts: 1,550

There was once a great game called Cosmic Rift, Rogue Trader zone.
Back in 2001-2 it was the best 2d space game out there.

It had an arena that was 26x26 screen lengths. Pretty big and enough to immerse that you were in space. Filled with asteroids and bases at every corner. With a maximum player cap of 100 in the one consistent arena.

The objective is to mine minerals of various types, refine and trade it in for credits to buy weapons and upgrades for your ship. You could even build up mini bases along with defence satellites that would help speed up the process of gathering the said minerals. Then once you were ready, you could engage in smooth twitch combat with other players any time you wanted.

Assaulting the mini bases and pirates picking on miners were a common thing that added to the atmosphere of the game. When you died, you lost nothing, but pride and a death count added to your score.

The problem is in 2003: SOE made it pay to play. Gave it crappy updates and basically drove the community away. Now, 2006. It's free again and reverted back to before the updates. It's still a favourite of mine today, but no body plays any more and the arena is almost always at 0.

So here I am looking for a replacement game. Looking for some thing similar. But my search is coming up empty, I'm thinking I've tried it all or it's not out yet. Any one know if I have missed any thing?

I'm looking for either 2d or 3d space game (MMO/FPS/RPG) that can fill the void. It can have PVE, but would like there to be PVP in it of course.

I've tried and found the following games not up to par for various reasons:
EVE(PVP is boring/jump gates), Star Sonata(glitchy combat), DarkSpace(lag), Vendetta(boring/constant jumping lost the space immersion), Supspace/Continuum(old and played to death), StarPort GE(this was actually good with exception that your fuel was limited), Ace of Angels(old and boring now :/ ) and a few more.

    Jumpgate.

And its coming update Jumpgate : Evolution

Yeah, I saw Jumpgate and heard about it's updated graphics version come out in the future. But then again, that's one occuring in the future and will be a while to wait until it comes out. Like all the good ones. :/
The original jump gate does seem unrealistically outdated as some said, so I'll stay away from it for now. Thanks for the advice though. :)

Really mentioned it so that one might begin the process of learning to fly in that environment.  :)

Also, if not really set on being in 'Space', then Planetside is not bad.  Has a full complement of Air vehicles from small fighters to large transport craft.  In addition to the ground game, of course.

Would not recommend Tabula Rasa.  Not quite cooked yet.  And is only Ground game.

For freebie, Anarchy Online is nice, but is really just a standard ground MMORPG.

And, finally, the sad SWG with its JTLS addition.

If I had to pick, I would do either Jumpgate (for training for the future game), or Planetside for the flight.

Of course, there is always BF2142, which is like Planetside in that it is a ground game with flight vehicles available.  And, its free after initial box purchase; always a bonus. :)

    Good Hunting

Yeah, I've thought about Planetside. But with no trials available. I'm not sure if I want to buy into a dead game because I've heard it hasn't been doing so well in player numbers as of late. Same with SWG. They sound like good games that have passed their time.

Tabula Rasa, waiting for it to shape up and get good reviews before I'll try that one. Been following it closely as well.

Anarchy Online, I tried to play that. Downloaded the client. Start the huge number of patches and then got to one patch. Error. Did the whole patch download again, got to the same patch: Error. Gave up and uninstalled. xD

But BF2142. I might actually go for that. Even though it's made by the evul EA. I thought BF Modern Combat was fun. :)

Thanks again for the suggestions. ^_^

People can easily cheat/hack (whatever) the titan mode last time I played (few months ago). Plus it bored me for some reason. Not so sure if it was like BF2 with the nades killing tanks thing. But it just seemed a little weird to me, tanks get killed easily etc. Not sure if the cheating thing is fixed though. But hey go for it if space/future is your thing. I think I disliked it because I'm not much of a future guy.

Download the new beta station lauchers and you can play an trail for PS. PS is still good in the numbers though and still fun even in the low pop hours. It might have as much numbers as SWG (not sure), but fights in Planet Side are focused around a few bases and towers at a time, meaning that the biggest part of the online comunity are spread around 2 to 4 places.

PS: Both have not passed their time yet, there is simply nothing with can replace SWG and PS. And no Battlefield series are NOTHING like Planet Side, beside the fact they both have fighting in air and ground and both are FPS.

Vendetta Online definitely check it out! There have been quite a few updates especially the dynamic hive system (the rogue bots have formed an large contingent and will expand throughout space if players dont prevent them). Might be worth trying again.
