Is DAOC worth it s salt as the main monthly game of a hardly hardcore player?

I have been looking to hook on to something till WAR and Conan come out and I  have some difficulty deciding between this game (of which I have heard good feedback for years now),EQ2 ,FFXI and LOTR...

I did get a fair share of time as a disciplined semi professional raider in WOW before the expansion came out and I quickly grew bored not only of performing instances but of the game and community itself, how would you judge the game play and community for the kind of player that doesnt hook for more than a few hours a day?

You will always get troll answering these posts, telling you the game is dead, it sucks, elitist community etc. Nevertheless I still find DAoC the best game out there. If I was into point and click as well as space, I'd say Eve Online. -But I like big axes! And they don't go hand in hand with space ships nowadays!

My advice to you is to start up on the american classic servers - or the newly reborn kilibury cluster! Thats the only 2 places left where you will be certain to get some action. But those two clusters still rock!

-So go for it! DAoC all the way!

All of the other games you mentioned are more towards "hard core" types of players - well maybe not LotRo.  I didn't like it enough to stick with it so not sure how the upper levels are.

Leveling in DAOC is easy and probably the fastest in any US mmorpg.  There is only a tiny amount of raid content in DAOC anymore - and such things are optional (like slaying the realm's dragon).  The game is oriented towards solo/group play.

The key thing is to find a good guild/alliance if you are wanting to be social.  There is an advice channel in the game and 99% of the time you get serious answers and help.  I have almost never seen any trash talking since that channel went live.

Most of the game is open with only a few things as instances.  Some quests from the DR expansion has instances, there are task dungeons (instances that you just clear out of mobs), and special adventure wings in dungeons.  The best XP is made outside of instances so you can avoid those.

You can start killing other players begining at level 1, although you really only get a chance around level 20 because no one bothers doing it before then.

I thank you both for the very helpful responses!

I am trying the LOTR trial and so far it's been pretty nice.

Although I can't exactly say my mind is blown it does show a certain polish and charm from the WoW standards, both it and DAOC's seem to have a healthy soberity of color and composition when it comes to visuals (Sorry ,I am still traumatized by the hi ghsugar content in most new MMO's)

As for big axes (and shambling undead!) that is my problem as well,I just love them too much

Taking into acounts the solo play liberty and maturity you mention...what the hell! methinks I ll give the trial a run!

Well if youre into big axes, then DAoC is in my opinion the only game

Nothing beats cracking an albion casters skull with a big, crude, dirty, heavy mallet!

Sounds like something a fellow middie would do.  I'm all for it.

I however no longer play the game.  All of my real life friends left the game and I no longer got the enjoyment I once had so I bailed out too.

I however hold out hope that all the games due to come out for the next decade fail horribly and mythic decides to just fix the problems in camelot and everybody plays it.  That way I can go back and play it and the servers wil be full of people once again, all of them!

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

    Yep, fellow middie here!

I will start playing again when I return to Denmark. Probably will start playing monday 17th of december!

Look for Wilda on the US classic servers!

Or if you want, we could start a stealth gang! Me and a friend have talked about making 2 shadowblades... you wanna be no. 3??

I m kind of inclined to go unearthing bodies necro style or cracking heads a la norse, but stealth sounds fun, I ll pm you as soon as I fix the trial!

  • IlliusIllius Member UncommonPosts: 4,142

If anything, give the free trial a try.  It's the best way for you to figure out if you'll like it or not.  There's not much we can tell you that a load of experience won't beat.

    just go try it.

I am about to lunch in and have already secured my horned historically unaccurate norse helmet, I ll try the classic us server and look for Wilda and the kilibury cluster :D

I say yes, DAOC is definitly worth its salt.

The trial account for 2 weeks will give you a good idea of what you can expect. Doesnt look like WAR or AoC is coming out anytime soon, so its time to find a home for the winter

Well,  all I can say is have fun because if you are looking for a good time then DAOC is it.  I have tried so many MMO's and only a few caught my attention.  The greatest time I had was in this game and SWG.  Tonight I will be installing this game again and grinding task dungeons...  If you want to group and level together just let me know.  What server I will be joining I do not know yet more or less the normal server due to popularity and just a good time.

Okey I wasnt able for some reaosn to get in the kilbury server

I ve started a couple of test characters in the Kay server for the Midgard nation ( Old manowar fan here)

    The characters are:

    Gostrerker (viking for berserker)

    Gostro (mystic for runemaster)

    Gostroll (viking for savage)

Im thinking of trying an shadowblade or a necro in some other server

    Pm me!

I see the confusion.  DAOC has lots of servers, but because of declining populations they had to "merge" them.  There were a few issues with this, so they linked the servers together called "clustering."  Killbury is the name of a cluster.  You can go here are look at the right to find servers on the killbury cluster:

    http://www.camelotherald.com/index.shtml

Edit:  One more thing, do not play a Shadowblade, or any assassin classes.  They are fun to play in the BG, but at level 50 become suckage unless you want to only fight other assassins.  Archers get a realm abiltiy called Mastery of Stealth that allows archers to see assassins at a distance.  So, assassins will get shot at and knocked out of stealth most of the times in most places and therefore die.  You will be forced to either hunt other assassins, play a weak pathetic melee version of your class, or spend all of your time in the Lab where the close quarters nulify some of the Archers advantages.  If you have the patience, you can bridge camp and wait for hours for a solo caster to come by to kill and hope some other assassin hasn't hunted you down and killed you while you wait for prey.

Necro's are ok, but there are better RvR choices.  Alb is overpopulated with Albion scum anyway so play Hib or Mid.

My question for you would be.. how would that be a troll answer?

Compared to before the archery changes the game IS dead.  Compared to before they clustered Gareth with the other 2 "classic" servers... the game IS dead.  There is also most certainly an elitist community in DAoC...

That doesn't mean the game can't be fun... it means pretty much its like almost every other MMO out there.

If you find *fun* its mostly going to be on a personal level.. not because someone else tells you the game is fun... or that its bad.. (it may still be fun to *you*).

Best answer.. there is a free trial.. (directed at OP) so you can try it.

Just pull up camelotherald.com and see where the population is.. becase the "dead" servers.. are pretty dead.
