Mysteriously disappearing characters

i exited and restarted and now my lv 10 engineer was gone...like vapor.
has anyone heard of a solution?

Some hellgates/portals are known to delete players characters. I was told that injecting your character with shock pill before stepping into the portal, should negate that effect.
My lvl 6 Blademaster popped up as a lvl 1 again oO
