P.S. I am looking for a game with a lot of class/job and/or race options. In fact, something with a lot of depth comparable to many MUDs. A thing about FFXI that turned me off was only 5 races to choose from in the beginning.

swg rocks to i played it a long time
or just check out the game list
Playing: City of Heroes/ Dark Age of Camelot
Upcoming: EverQuest II
navyzacktex, if you can, wait for WoW and EQ2. Those games will be much more noob friendly than previous generation mmrpgs and should give you a much better mmrpg experience.

Played: AC1, DAoC, E&B, SWG
Tested: AC1, AC2, DAoC, Eve, Planetside, Rubies, Lineage 2
you can try ryl online to its in open beta atm.
www.ryl.com.my
downlaod the client and the patch register at the site and you can play
I do currently test AC2 and I have to admit that it got quite well now. First you can never gimp your character due the fact you can untrain nearly everything. Second the death penalty system is not harsh.
Third the quest are really providing in that game. Third the community is really great! An excellent case for beginners at MMORPGs.
Betatesting: Unknown game coming soon! :P
Betatested: AC2; Lords of Everquest; Horizons; Fung Wan Online; Wish; Saga of Ryzom.
Testing: AC2
Playing: ?????
Retired: EQ; DAoC; SWG; Shadowbane; UO free shards, Ashen Empires; Horizons; AC1
Attempt to test or play: Darkfall; EQ2; Dark & Light, WoW, Mourning
Play My magic Tales
Play Rise of Immortals
Play Regno card game for free.
Premium membership available.
Only thing that I don't like about FFXI are:
1. Force grouping
2. Characters are wiped if you haven't subscribed for 3 months.

Ok everyone is right about the upcoming MMORPGs, yes they will be awesome any you will be able to get stat over with everyone else. But if you want a MMORPG to hold you off till the new ones come out I would have to suggest without question Anarchy Online. Why.... well lets just go through the ones you said you were interested in.
Everquest: Perhaps the greatest MMORPG, and defiantly the most popular. However at this point in the game the 5yr head start everyone had on you will become painfully apparent. Not to mention all the expansion packs your going to have to get. Yes Norath is expansive but if you a noob at this point in time finding a party might take some time (this is in my experience). There is a free trail if you have a buddy key, but even then you need a friend with the cds. And with EQ coming out... if your not already playing why start?
FFXI: My first MMORPG.... and the worst addiction of my life. If there is one redeeming quality about FFXI it is that you will feel a great sense of accomplishment. However there is a reason for that feeling, this game is a lvl grind no matter how you look at it. Forced partying can suck, but I was a whm so I had to swat party invites away. Another problem with this game is its complete lack of variety... you will be fighting crabs lvls 1 and 30. You see due to the restrictions of the PS2 they could only do so much... so to create lots of different mobs they used the same graphic over and over and simply changed the name. Tradeskills in this game are also time consuming and expensive, but there are allot of good guides out there to help you. Finally YOU WILL PLAY LVLS 1-18 THREE TIMES AND LVLS 18-30 TWICE if you want to have any chance of finding a party. Unless you have nothing better to do and love level grind challenge you will not like this game. And oh.. it is nothing like all other preceding Final Fantasy games.
AO: I loved AO from the minute I started playing. Yes people may complain about empty areas, but not in the Shadowlands (choose RK-1 server and Jobe as home city). There are always people looking for teams at all levels. Yes the learning curve is kinda high, but the the community is great and you can find any info you need at http://aovault.ign.com/thegame/guides/. This game isn't even difficult if you pick an easy profession like Martial Artist. There are many many places to travel and soloing is very possible. You know what, screw it this game is currently offering a free 7 day trial so just go see it for yourself. If you don't like it in 7 days you haven't lost anything! Beat that!
In conclusion welcome to the wonderful although sometimes frustrating world of MMORPGs!
Oh yea... real quick. City of Heros is a fun, simple, and cool looking MMORPG. However it lacks depth, and so I lost intrest after a month... But the MMORPG you pick is all about you!
