Hopefully the big companies will show everyone how it's done and bring polish to mmorpgs like Blizzard brought with them and hoprfully more companies run their mmorpgs like CCP do where you don't pay for expansions and they care about their community.
I'm sick of all the buggy same old boring crap that SOE or NCsoft etc etc produce.
There are many games that have comparatively tiny populations that still have a monthly sub fee, and they manage to stay above water. Look at Asherons Call 1 - its never had that many subscribers, but it is still around since launching in 1999.
Upcoming games in development that can be considered "big guns" are AoC, Aion, Darkfall Online, Fallen Earth, PoTBS, STO, Stargate Worlds and WAR. Expect two or three of these games to tank before release. Sorry, not being negative, it is just the business. To that end, I say the deck is stacked against Aion, Darkfall Online, and STO.
Aion is an Asian game and we know Asian games don't really have a lot of success in NA/EU. Darkfall Online has too much competition from AoC. The devs from AoC are going to be making some FFA PvP servers, so the pvp crowd will have a place to call home without waiting any longer for Darkfall. STO, what can I say. P.E. consolidated their efforts and they are obligated to Bethesda for their engine. As such, I see them going to back their Perpetual Platform as their focus and letting others develop games. They need to stick to what they are good at and that is platform. As such, I see these three titles being put to rest as far as the NA/EU within the next 12-18 months.
AoC will do fine, but to do the game right, I don't see coming along til end of 2008/2009. They have shown us too little for me to have faith they can deliver by March 25, 2008. When it does release, I believe will be the "Big Gun" of those upcoming.
Fallen Earth is going to the Sci-Fi sleeper there. If you have not be following this game, do. If they can pull of their features list, they'll be in prime position to take over the "Big Gun" spot for Sci-Fi.
PoTBS, meh. SoE does their marketing, distribution/billing. Everyone is seeing SoE all over this game. It will be a hard sell for Flying Lab Software to shake the "Sony doesn't own us" mentality when they are going to be a Station Pass game.
I'll be honest, didn't like the series and I don't know much about this game. Saying that, the company behind has some great people behild who do know how to make games so I suspect they'll survive with 150,000-250,000 subscriber.
The one thing all the games that are out now have over these upcoming games is the ones on the market today are paid for. It is far easier to maintain a game once it launches than to get a game to market. The only one's I see in trouble are Fury, HG:L, and TR. These are all ok games stuck between the big dogs. The last place you want to be is between two big dogs fighting over a bone.
Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:
"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."
Current gen games won't become free...games usually don't go from F2P to P2P even if they are outdated (EQ1) or on their last legs (Horizons). An exception to tihs would be AO.
When WAR and AoC are released, we will all be pissed on how little promises they delivered on. Then we will all be talking about the next gen mmorpgs while WAR and AoC fade to mediocrity.

The problem starts when you listen to promises. In fact, paying attention in any way to features lists. Pay no attention and when the game shows up you can assess its worth on its own merits.

If Mythic delivers on what they've shown in their video blogs and what was seen/played on in hands on previews at Game Workshop conventions ( attended by thousands of GW fans ) they will be sitting pretty.
STO and SGW aren't "Big Guns". Only WAR and AOC could be considered a big gun at this point. I'm afraid that neither will be as good as we want or deserve.
With stargates following if they can get a good game rolling i think they will be able to compete.
Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.

I do not think games that are P2P will go F2P. No, However, we can hope that those games will continue to survive. the lifespan of a MMORPG is still not yet known.
And for all those who think AoC and WAR will somehow destroy WoW, not going to happen. I'm no fan of WoW, but I hope they continue to be popular and thrive...because they are bringing in players who never opayed MMORPGs. And more WoW players will mean a larger customer base for more MMORPGs and the industry as a whole growns and thrives.
what will happen when the big guns come out like AOC and WAR..will most games like COH/V become F2P becuz of competetion
Personally i think they will still end up selling out and trying to make the game more "wow"ish. Like the games recently have been. They'll repeat the same boring quest grind, level grind etc. Heeeey go kill 500 of these and come back thanks! Seems like a big time sink to me.

Out of the Big Budget MMOs it will be pretty hard for them to create the quest grind or level grind. They will probably have another type of grind though just cause mmos have no lasting appeal without some form of grinding.
AoC, WAR, and Chronicles of Spellborn are PVP based. If it comes down to collecting kill tokens, then atleast the AI on the monsters you are killing is up to human intelligence.
Aion and RO2 are the only real upcoming PvE games and they redid the combat and the leveling system. In Aion you level by completing an instanced scenario of your level. So it could be a level grind if you just can't beat it. In RO2 once they start testing the actual content, you progress by completing long dynamic quest chains that give massive exp. So atleast you will be able to choose how you progress through them. However, both seem to grind out the skills and RO2 grinds out the equipment since you have to level them.
However, I have started to see some old P2P games turning into F2P. Like pRO has opened up its f2p competition server that you can buy items on. NCSoft also seems to be looking into f2p business models. Even SOE is starting to experiment with f2p models for a couple of its new games.
When WAR and AoC are released, we will all be pissed on how little promises they delivered on. Then we will all be talking about the next gen mmorpgs while WAR and AoC fade to mediocrity.

Well TBH this is the biggest issue with both AoC and WAR: Up until now most vet MMOers and a few new commers have known a MMO release is NEVER a 'complete game' it's just how polished and stable it is..
Both EA Mythic and Funcom have containtly delayed their games under the 'we don't beleave MMOs should be released 'uncomplete' and unstable, so we are delaying our game until we feel it's done' flag, with them constantly hammering that fact in everyone will be expecting a complete (if not near complete) game from them both..
So if either does get realeased and it's a bug ridden unstable mess, then their game will tank horribly and they will lose all credibility from us the playerbase and it would have a every hard time trying to come back in our favour... (See: Vanguard, Dark and Light, and to some players SWG: Post-CU)..
It's a huge risky promise for both and personally I damn hope they live up to it
When the big guns come out, people will say they suck, they will scream for nerfs, they will say the games are awful because they dont work on thier computer and their 14.4k modem, they will scream that its too expensive, too easy, too much like WoW and not enough WoW feeling, the PvP will be awful, unbalanced, all other classes are godmode and their own class is terrible, terrible. The graphics will suck, the gameplay will suck, the connection and lag will suck, everything will suck, its so godamn awful, I am going back to the game I know!!! And with a huff and a puff they storm out of the forum and... continue to pay the monthly fee in silence

I agree. I feel that the days of the 3-4 your developement time for MMOGs are over for big, AAA games. I wouldn't be surprised if these games start taking 5-7 years to complete like the old days. Blizzard proved with WoW that you can deliver a quality game. Any game that releases in the state Vanguard did will be shot down by the masses. I'm glad the community is expecting just as much quality now as potential. It is long over-due.

Well techically WoW's release was just as bug ridden and messy as any other MMOs release, it just got patched up within 6-8 months, shame the 'balancing' and 'content' didn't really hit it until 2 years after.. Hence why both games are set to be as stable as WoW is now, as most WoW players actally missed that 'bug ridden' time
Yep WoW players somehow seem to be under the impression that it was perfect in every way. I played beta and was there at launch at there were massive issues which were well reported in beta that weren't fixed for launch. I'm not talking just small issues either, some of them were pretty big. There are a few problems with early quests and low levels that still haven't been addressed because Blizzard is still catering to the high levels and ignoring new players (discounting alts who know all the tricks)
No game is going to be 100% perfect at launch but as long as it's not massively flawed then quick fixes and regular patches can fix the worst of it while minor issues are worked on.

you wish. why would any game go F2P because of competition? this genre is tiny atm its only gonna get bigger...
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

WAR Will take 1 or 2 million Subscription Then fall to 700K

Wow Will Keep on Going, and will Laugh At all the idiots Trying To Copy there success.
