What do these mean, and why do people complain that everything was better before these events?
I briefly played SWG when it was in beta, but it didn't really appeal to me. So I know practically nothing about the game.

As a kid I used to have sets of Lego that were just different size and shape of blocks, which allowed you to create your own "creations". It was fun because you were simply limited to your own imagination.
In later years more and more sets of Lego seemed to be sets that were designed to create 1 item. I always felt it ruined the idea of Lego as you were no longer using your imagination, but instead you were creating the same model over and over again.
I feel like the NGE version of SWG is like that version of Lego. You are not really using your imagination anymore, but rather building the same model over and over again.
The earliest version of SWG (pre-CU) was like that first version of Lego IMO. I felt like I had the freedom to create what I wanted to create. My only complaint about pre-CU was that there was not more options, allowing me to be more creative. To use the Lego analogy I wish I had more variety of blocks.
CU and NGE were both publishes in a simple view not anything else then patches. But SWG undergo radical changes with both of these in a time span of 6 months. The world was up and running 2 years at the time the first patch the CU applied. During that time we vets collected much experiences and done big progressed with our chars.
All server were populated , the game appeared complex (32 professions mix-match , various crafting) with many social interaction and sometimes pure ingenious art ( Windspire Balgosa production :P) the world was like a sandbox and everyone was busy with something unexpected. Jedi was introduced as possible achievement and ofc all try all the possibilities around this achievement out. Wich ended up in to all be busy how you become Jedi, at the same time crafter discovered ways to make armor and buffs better then the developers thought, nyway the game was still enjoyable cause it doens't lost all the richness by that time but some change for balancing was needed so many thought.
$OE snap at the chance to not only fix the game but their type of customer aswell. Sales and Marketing officials started to state that the game is too complex to get into , it requires to much reading (targeting for younger audience) and becuase they was always envy at WoW numbers (and btw play more WoW then their own game) they took WoW as an direction to develop SWG into.
First step was CU , particle effects ,a doctor not only restored the targets life but also sends magical beams out of his hands this magical flashing beam envelops the so healed person, a doctor as an elf in universe so to speak , cartoon icon, dead of animations of skills was introduced along with change of skills ,change of game speed ( slower ) cool down timers, armor requirements and weapon certificates , all the things that took freedom out of duels, as well as turning PvE combat in a group required event , whats again took a bit freedom away from player (pretty current and "modern" isn't it eh ? ) but hey the heck with it , the complexity of 32 professions and the various skills were still there.
The next strike $OE planned should necro the game. 6 months after the CU they unleashed the NGE code on the servers not only it removed the last highlight , the 32 professions you could mix-match but also took the last mystery the ultimate achievment you could accomplish the Jedi, with an introducing of the so called "iconic" 9 classes. No freedom anymore ,no even small mystery anymore plain stupid classes and btw turn speed as high as possible (what was reduced cause of CU) calling this fast paced
combat --well needless to say it hurted to be part or even watch combat .
That was some bits of the technical review of the changes. Now some words to what the company telled us during this. No word to the Wow-ish childish cartoonish icons and particle effects, lost of animation were bugs devs looking into ,unlocks of Jedi regarding issues and the shutdown of the force ranking system ( the way to Jedi Master) were just bugs devs look into / is in work .
So a bag full of lies with the goal to establish a new game something the customer don't initially "buyed" and in the last resort to bury him (a well expected one cause of the stupidity of the game after the changes) and to replace him with millions of WoW players (seemsto me $OE officials/developers thinks WoWplayer are somehow dump) ...hahaha...
We all know now..Smed too...this CU / NGE was a disaster ...
Nearly all SWG gamer (of course those who buildup chars during last 2 years see this as a difficult step and of course all thenew player who joinedafter thechange don'tknow about the richness of before -unfortunately and "thanks" to $OE no one can say tot hem take a look and login to experience this-$OE done a "good job" on destroying something at the root ) player wanna play a fixed balanced and polished version of before the changes the so called PRE CU .

CU = Combat Upgrade, a publish in late April 2005 that radically transformed the game, imposing overt combat levels, stratifying the playerbase based on those levels, and destroying the medical professions by giving them magic spells rather than skills to use crafted objects to heal other players.
NGE= New Game Enhancements, which destroyed the game and replaced the skill system with dumbed down for the retarded like Nancy McIntyre "iconic" classes, and while it got rid of "reading", it also got rid of "players".
CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

Amen exactly the best discription yet.. Lego's light as i call it. Or for them thar stoopid peeple..Remember SWG had way too much reading an choices too be a good game. Who wants to play a game as they please, or choose your own adventure? Obiviously over 8 mill prefer easy loot level lead you by the hand none reading games..
And Nancy McIntyre is working for Leapfrog now, an educational software company. I'm sure she's removing reading from their programs even as we speak.
Those are "cuss words' to many SWG players. However, they represent 2 major "additions' to the game and resulted in significant game change. many players left because of it

Stories tell of 2 great evils that were done unto a foreign world,
Both Times the Great Evils came in 2 parts, the first was the initial act,
The Initial act was A great change made in the world which made it a terrifying place to live,
The Resulting act was millions of virtual people dying,
The Original Great act of evil was Called the "CU",
After the "CU" it was scary but managable and after while the game was fun and good again,
People began to return, and it almost felt back to normal, but it would never be normal,
Soon another great evil would come, more powerful, and terrifying than anything anyone had ever seen,
This thing was called the "NGE" this abomination, ravaged the virtual world,
This "NGE" Ruined the trust of millions of people and destroyed that virtual world forever,
There were some survivors but, who still claim life in this barren, evil place, but, these are only legends,
However, another legends fortells, a great genesis, the creation of a new world,
This world would be shaped to be identical to the original,
However Legend also warns of a great evil entity, the creator of the original world,
Once benevolent, and caring, this entity, being as malevolent as it currently is,
Is foretold to attempt to ruin this new world for the people who hope for this new world,
But it is foretold that there will be an epic battle, and in that battle the malevolent entity will lose,
In losing this entity, will go back into hiding in the far corners of the universe,
In those corners of the universe it will control and manipulate other galaxies,
It is foretold that after years of being in the far corners of the universe,
The creatures' evil will leave it and eventually, maybe the other being's will trust it again.
But these are just Legends, children's stories, but I believe it could happen, maybe just maybe.
I have nothing against anyone who still plays this game or anything like that, I hold no grudge against the malevolent creature, its not its fault, its just its nature since its been infected. As to those who still believe this game is alive, I have ntohing against that, I've jsut been hurt too many times by the creature to trust it again. As for those who say still following a game that has become something you hate, is like stalking an ex-girlfriend, I only did that once, and its just you love it so much you hate to see it go, but you can't trust it again, However you can stalk it until someone who looks almost exactly like her comes along, who wont betray you (or just stick around with it till it does) )
And one last thing, no I'm not actually obsessed with this game, yes it was awesome, I was just bored and thought I'd make some jokes.
