Atmospheric Flight: When?

I found this video on "you tube" from an Eve Fanfest that shows atmospheric flight with combat. It is from 2006. Is this something that is still coming down the pipe with the upgrades for 20089?

I imagine its a long ways off. Avatars are what they're currently pushing forward. They'll probably spend time adding features to that and fleshing out what players want for their avatars for awhile. I vaguely remember reading once that CCP had a 10 year plan for new stuff for Eve so I'm sure once they know they can do it right they'll add it. I wouldn't hold my breath, just enjoy what's actually in the game for now.

Ya I read about their 10 year plan as well. Its always been a "game dream" to do in a live game what that video displays. Either way I love this game. Fly safe.

As far as I can tell they've canned atmospheric flight, though I don't remember CCP saying much after that fan fest. They had a working demo of it and people were excited but then it just faded away as Revelations got closer until CCP just stopped mentioning it. That's one reason I'm rather sceptical that ambulation will make it into the game before 2009. Until the CEO states himself that it will be a feature and by which year it's still a bit dodgy in my opinion.

Actually if i remember right they said that atmospheric flight was a 'Possable' Future idea. The video you see on youtube is just a normal ingame video with a different background made to look like planetry ground.

So its not exactly a promised feature just an idea they were playing with 4 years ago.

During 2008, CCP will introduce a new supercomputer. I imagine a lot depends on how good it will be.

Judging by Fanfest, "walking in stations", is the focus at the moment.

Atmospheric flight sounds good, but I think ambulation is better because I spend much time docked, and it would be great to be able to sit down and talk to people.

I'd like to have a drink with Sirmolle and Curzon Dax!

Yes they showed some Concept art for it in the fanfest. Cant find it but ill describe what little i remember.

One image showed a planet broken into zones hinting at terratorial warfare.

Another image showing 2 mimitar dropships deploying troops and tanks while Amarr battleships are firing on the dropzone base.

My favourate image shows whats obviously a caldari tank moving over a hill while comming under fire from some soldiers.

Note this is not much more than concept art right now as they are concentrating on Ambualtion the new graphics and of course the new Supercomputer they are getting to replace some of the node connections which will allow live node resource changes [thats what causes blob lag because resources cant currently be moved while servers are live].

Atmospheric flight was never canned, it was just put on the backburner until they felt they could do it properly. It's the next goal after they get ambulation in now, it was stated at the fanfest in oveurs presentation. From the way he described it it'll be very rts like.

As for ambulation, it'll come out next year without a doubt, from what they showed at fanfest they have a lot of the art assets done or nearly done and the engine looks like it's pretty far along as well. Just watch the fanfest vids and you'll see there's a hell of a lot more done on it then there was on the planetary flight concept they showed at the 2004 fanfest.

I dont think you can even warp close to planets with a Titan, If they get to close to a planet it pretty much destroys the planet due to gravitational fields and such...its in one of storys for EvE...forget which one. But ever since one destroyed a planet by getting to close to it they have banned titans from getting in close.

But, from my understanding Planetary Flight has been pushed back until they get "more important" features into it. Such as ambulation "ie testing out what will work for the White Wolf MMO"...

Short gist of it.

Currently Sidelined till at least after ambulation and most likely 2nd or 3rd part of planetary interaction

RTS/FPS Style game engine.

Frigate/Destroyer classes only available in atmo, maybe cruisers at largest but more and likely not even destroyers.

Thats the current gist of what has been released about it now. There has been on going development of it but they will be effectively adding 40+ ships and upwards of 40+ weapons systems into the game when they finally gets around to it, So expect late 2009-2010 at the earliest at my guess.

Thanks for the updates and the info- either way I love this game and the integrity behind CCP. I can wait for these concepts to enter Eve. It will be done when its ready and that I appreciate. It is very interesting to see how this game has evolved since 2003.

After seeing the full trinity trailer I can only imagine what CCP have in store for ambulation and planetary interaction.

This game just climbed right back on top of the best graphics list. Even DX10 AoC will be hard pressed to match it now.

Problem with that assertion is that Devs ahvent even reached to limits of DX10 sofftware tech yet so who knows?

Netherless its a great video and i cant wait till it comes out.
