First and foremost, Hello, I'm brand new to the forums. That is, these forums. As I'm a veteran forum member elsewhere, I understand how annoying it can be when new people show up and start threading up the place. I apologize, but I have a MMORPG question that requires advice and I know not a better place to ask it. Bear with me.
I've been playing City of Heroes: Heroes vs. Villains edition for about 4 months (The Jack of all Shades, to my fellows), and I love the game. I have had nearly no desire to play another game for those 4 months. But tonight I'm watching The Matrix and remembering that The Matrix Online is out there too, taunting me with it's Matrixy goodness. Or not?
Generally The Matrix Online gets poorer reviews than CoH, but still, it's the matrix. And that alone has to create massive resolve.
My real problem springs from the fact that I should not (almost cannot) pay for both games monthly, and I'm not entirely sure my laptop (who hates laptop mmorpgers? sorry) can hold both of the games. The following questions need to be answered, and you no doubt could've skipped the whole thread and read these to get the gist. I apologize.
How is the Matrix Online?
Is it worth the switch?
Is there a way (that I can't find to save my life) to cancel my subscription to CoH and try MxO without having to rebuy CoH should I choose to stay the course? I don't mind shelling out the 20 bones for The Matrix even if I don't decide to keep it, but I'd like a trial period if possible.
a player of both games is ideal for this thread. thank you for your time. take care of yourselves.

Let me put it this way, MxO may be one of the worst implemented games of all time that is still running, and the only reason it IS still running is because it's part of the station pass. It's awful. It makes galaxies look spectacular. It makes vanguard look godlike. I played it for 3 months because my wife bought it for me because I loved the matrix movies... and it makes me sick to think how they butchered those movies with that game.
CoX is a much much better game... even though it has its fair share of flaws.
Almost all MMO's matrix and cox included don't "disappear" if you cancel your subscription... I went back to cox a year after i quit and juts had to pick up the sub fee again (not box fee). I tried galaxies again recently and it just involved the monthly fee. I think the only exception to that i've found is FFXI, which is a monstrosity of a game for a variety of reasons.

i myself have played box MxO and CoH/CoV's.
in my honest opinion stay with coh i played mxo for a total of 12 hours (day i bought it) then uninstalled it the game was horrible. i recently reactivated my SOE all access pass so went back to mxo to try it out again see if it had changed and was disapointed to find it just as horrible as ever the combat is horrible the character movement is horrible the whole game imo is just horrible i cant even say there is a saving grace to it apart from it has matrix in the title.
CoX while in many aspects of missions ect is very similar the game plays much smoother the combat is more fun and fast tbh matrix should have been like that.
at the end of the each to their own opinion and if you really wanna fork out 20 bucks for the game go for it but i think you will be very very disapointed.
good luck

Well, I too have recently been looking for a new game to play. I tried the trial for SWG (having never played it at all before) and was pretty disgusted at how bad it really was.
After three days in SWG I decided to try MxO. Unlike the guy above me I am really enjoying MxO. It is far from perfect and I can certainly see why it would turn off a lot of people but I believe it has a lot going for it.
I do not believe it is only still alive because of the station pass. Every time I log in all three servers are at least medium population and I see new players constantly, because I am one and I group with them.
Also the community is very good. I have not met a single person that I would consider a jerk.
The combat is very unique in MxO. It is very cinematic and to me requires just a bit more thinking than combat systems in most other games.
The ability system is very good. There are something like 21 different ability trees that you can go down which inclue hacking, coding, stealth, guns, and martial arts among others. The very cool thing is that you can switch abilities at any time without penalty. I started out as a martial artist but decided I wanted to try out spy last night so I just switched my skills and I was a spy. Ive since gone back to doing Kung Fu.
Though I have not had a chance to participate in them yet there are live GM events that are held on a very regular basis, almost daily from what I hear, that keep the story progressing. This also lends a hand to RP in the game which is what most of the community does.
All in all I am very pleased with MxO so far. I dont know if Ill be playing it in 2 months but I do know Ill be playing it tomorrow, and for now that is all I care about.
well I suppose that solves it.
it is incredibly disappointing that people couldn't put together a decent matrix game. or a decent second two movies. screw 'em.
i'd also hate to lose my main toon in CoH and my 7 or 8 alts, even if i could rejoin.
thanks for the help. i think i'm going to go be a hero for awhile.
(fantastic forums, by the way. couldn't believe the response rate.)
You dont lose your characters if you unsub to CoH/V.
I have subbed and unsubbed several times and all of my characters were always there.
been and gone from CoX twice now mate you wont loose your toons. if you do want to cancel you have you log into your plaync account on their website im sure to close it but with the click of a button you can reactivate it again

a click of a button you say!
it's almost too easy. i don't trust it.
another question:
if not by way of MxO, then how do I satisfy my thirst for matrixy goodness? I mean, bullettime fighting is fun and all, but the one lvl and limited moves gets old after awhile. (for those of you who haven't, www.stickpage.com/matrixbullettimeplay.html)
YOu should play lineage 2...
But if you are seriously just going cox or matrix, then go city of heroes.

most games are a pain in the backside to cancel but when your coming back offering your sweet cash there is no problem resubbing :P
