Wow, what's up with the gold seller banner on the MMORPG homepage? I thought that gold selling was generally frowned upon.
The status of gold buying actually depends on who you discuss it with. On the one side, there are developers, wannabe developers (supply side) and catass status gamers that see gold buying in the same way that most of us see torturing old people in a nursing home. On the other side, we have players (demand side) that feel the same way about game companies demanding $15 a month for the privilege of working a second job that pays in Monopoly money.
What side you choose to take depends on a few factors.
1) Do you work in the video game industry or want to work in the video game industry?
2) Do you spend 3 or more hours a day playing MMORPGs?
3) Do you have a job, wife, kids or a combination of those three?
If you answered yes to numbers 1 and 2 but no to 3, then you want gold sellers burned at the stake on national television. If you answered no to 1 and 2 but yes to 3 then you appreciate the ability to actually enjoy the game for a few dollars more a month but despise the fact that you have to pay extra in order to get an enjoyment out of game that should have been fun to begin with.
This has been brought up before in prior posts. As much as I know, the new gold seller banner has been up fo about a week now. The staff of MMORPG.com has already commented on it. They will not turn down advertisers based on thier content (that's paraphrasing). However, I assume since there are no XXX banners currently blinking in our eyes they will keep to some standards.
I frown upon gold selling as much as the next guy. HOwever, I will not condemn them. MMORPG.com is a business, in a crowded market of MMORPG info sites. I wager its a pretty tough business and the profit margin is slim (if present at all). And so, its up to us. If we do not like what MMORPG.com advertises, then we have the option of not visiting and going elsewhere. Also, we do NOT have to look or participate in the advertisement. Just dont click, the real money in internet advertising is based on PPC (pay per click) or referal (people who actually purchase the product). But buying gold is occuring by normal players. A thread on this topic can be found here. http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/157281
Its almost a self fulfilling industry. Gold buyers flood a market with gold such that many players HAVE to buy gold in order to keep up with inflation. Its a viscous cycle, but one that the industry (both developers and fringe businesses like MMORPG.Com) have decided to accept.

haha I was surely impressed to when I first saw that

Hope this helps
Actually the one's who answer no to your number 3 are usually the ones who DO buy gold because they dont have the time to farm it
And its not a black n white subject like you try to make it
If it's not against the games ToS I could care less what people do.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
