WoW or EVE?

dhaevndhaevn Member Posts: 28

Well, I'm at a crossroads. I've played WoW since open beta on and off. But, earlier this year I called it quits. Also, I've played EVE before as well, although never got real deep into it. In WoW, I'd be returning to a lvl 60-ish Draenei Warrior and be exploring the Outland in preparation for the next expansion. In EVE, I'm not sure what I'd be returning to.

Right now, I can't decided which to return to. It's one or the other. Any advice?

You could always try a different game :)

Sorry I know that's not the answer you were really looking for, but I couldn't bring myself to advise you to return to either of those two games.

They both have new content coming (WoW has WotLK, EVE has Trinity), so it's a toss-up there, although Trinity will be here long before WotLK. As far as cost, EVE is cheaper (no boxed product to buy, and free if you have enough ISK to buy a TC). But that means nothing if you like WoW better, so it boils down to personal preference.

Hm. That accomplished absolutely nothing, did it?

Evil will always win, because Good is dumb.

If you return to WOW, you return to the faction grind. That's pretty much all it is after 60 I think. Grind rep till exalted so you can ride this new mount for 1000 gold or use this new hammer.  At least that is what really drove me out of the game.

Eve on the other hand is also as time consuming. For example flying long distances in space can take quite sometime. However EVE is by far a more engrossing game if you like sci fi sorta stuff. Especially if you get involved in a  corp. Skills can be learned while offline as well which is nice for people who don't have tons of time to be logged in.

Ooh here's an idea, if it really does have to be one or the other!

Take various sauces from the kitchen and apply them to a plate, grab a utensil and squiggle the sauces around a bit.... rotate the plate until you see either the letters EVE or WOW in there.

The two games are so completely different, like comparing apples to orangatangs, I find it hard to advise him as well.

First of all the two games are on opposite ends of the complexity spectrum. You want something simple? Go with WoW. Complex? Then it's EVE. Tired of Fantasy? Then EVE. Tired playing a third person ship? Then WoW.

I'd say try a different game as well.

    OFC EVE! :)

Myself playing eve for 3 years, tried WoW but nothing got me in that. Eve is limitless, lots of variety of ships and fittings, also a good industrial part if you are not a PVP fan.

How do you go about buying a Timecard with ISK in EVE anyway?

  • TesinatoTesinato Member UncommonPosts: 222

You have to contact someone who is selling them to buy one.  Only issue is you would need your account online to do it, as far as I know, less you knew the person doing it and they were willing to wait til your account got online to get their isk for it.  As far as the original question, everyone seems to be right, you are comparing 2 games that are on their own side of the fence.  I'd go eve, but I'm bias as I have been playing eve for a little over 2 years now, and couldn't stomach wow to get to the end game.  But, from your post, I'd say you have a better chance being happy in eve as you will be able to redefine your goals once you get in and remember all the stuff, where as you have a linear path you need to do for WoW, which i'm not sure if that is what you want to do or not.  Hope this helped at least a little.

How about buying 1 month of time to WoW and 1 month of time to EvE. Start playing both games at the same time, and see for yourself wich one you end up playing.

I'd recommend WoW because I like WoW better. And the posters who recommend EvE do so because they like EvE better. But both games have improved a lot, both games will be improving, and still if you have played them you'll be returning to same familiar game in both cases. Since you know both of the games already, what advise is there one can give to you?

If you liked PvP in WoW, it has improved a lot with arenas so check it out. Not that PvE wouldn't have improved, it just doesn't have any so radical changes.

Hmm..... I played WOW for a total of 1.75 yrs before tiring of the faction grind and raiding.   After a short stint with both Vanguard and LotRO (couple of months for both) I've settled into EVE for the past 6 months and am  enjoying the experience.

How does that help with your decision? No clue......

If I look at the text you are writing here it seem you will be best of in WoW atm.

I'm a fan of both games but i've gotta say WoW for you.  Experience Burning Crusade and get in an arena team until WAR or Wrath of the Lich King.

If you can't decide which of those two games you want to play you probably haven't played one of them to realize how different they are from each other.

Most EVE players will tell you they hate WoW.

The funny thing is most WoW players that have tried EvE say it is boring.

I played em both and must say they are both good ceptin different ways . I got a wild hair a month or 2 ago and thought i'd try eq2 again and I must say SoE has finally done something right. Im hooked on eq2!!! The game is awesome now since Rise of Kunark 4th expansion and no it is nothing like the trial. Buy RoK ..40 bucks for all expansions plus all adventure packs included. Trust me and jump right in. You'll be glad you did! :)~

Rock-Paper-Scissors is a nice option... no need to do dishes afterwards.

Also, it's a good backup plan in case you see the virgin Mary in your plate and decide to sell it for $10,000 on ebay.

Seriously though... You should try something completely different just so you can get immersed a game again instead of being bored with an old game that you're already familiar with.

I have strong opinions about both games. EVE is definately the better game between the two. If you have to pick one, I'd pick EVE. But when you're sick of being the low man on the totem pole and getting gate-ganked repeatedly, you'll just want to leave again.

I'd try one of the other games that have been greatly improved recently. EQ2, LOTRO, and VG are all good choices. Or wait a month and play POTBS when it's released. Other games coming out soon: WAR (it's kinda like WOW2) and Conan (I have my reservations about this game, there's not much info out about it, and the info that is out isn't that innovative).

Darkfall is going to be the best game out when it's released. But they haven't committed to a date yet.

The funny thing is most WoW players that have tried EvE say it is boring.

Most of the WOW players that say eve is boring are prob 13 year old kids. You can keep them. EVE is not a game you can just jump into and instantlly play without paying attention to a pretty indepth tutor. Most kids don't have the patience. EVE is a game for adults in general.

WOW is mostly instanced  grindfest raidwhoring safe pvp game with no loss full of annoying kids in a cartoonish simple brainless theme all with a big corporate bow wrapped around it.

EVE by far has the most mature player base (Of course there's exceptions). Many in my corp are ex or current military. Largest sandbox universe by far. ALL people are on the SAME SERVER (usually around 30k online). a pvp game with risk and loss. No skill grind as you train by time. No elves. When you kill someone you can loot their wreck and keep their corpse as a trophy. EVE is a huge game with much to do other then combat also.

EVE is also about to undergo a huge upgrade with a all new engine called Trinity and soon releasing walking avatars to satisfy all the people wanting to get out of their ships.

Anyone need any help in game or advise my in game name is E Vile I would be glad to help, as you'll most likely need help learning EVE as it's a complete change from other MMO's.

    Yup. What he said.

EVE is just a better game. It's much much deeper. The only downside of EVE is that it's very difficult to catch up to the vets who have a huge lead in the game. You'll get ganked and gate-killed a lot for a while.

Other than that, it's an awesome game if you don't mind playing a ship (not a person). But, like Shohadaku said, there's an expansion coming soon that will fix that. Combat is kinda lame at first but it gets more interesting as you advance and get into PvP.

I've been thinking of getting back into EVE again. I'm waiting for POTBS, but I just learned that game will be heavily instanced though. I just want a game to hold me over until Darkfall is released.

F that, just because people don't find EvE's combat fun doesnt mean they are 13 year olds or lack any intelligence. I left WoW a long long time ago, combat was fun... I like it better then EvEs. But i like EvEs world and immersion, and ruthless world. Do I wish the combat was more interactive ie more like a space flight sim? Sure. But I can appreciate the current combat system and still love to play.

Just tired of all the WoW hate. I don't play WoW any more and hate the Dranei and new xpac comming out, but you WoW haters are worst then the SWG vets that wont let their Pre NGE servers go.

I don't hate WoW. I just hate how it's lowered the standards and dumbed down MMOs for kids. Now we have VG, LOTRO, EQ2, and all the upcoming MMOs with the same lame rulesets.

Some of us played MMOs since UO and really enjoyed the old rulesets (FFA PVP, no instances, corpse looting, etc). Since WoW, we we can't get a decent MMO developed with any depth or adult rulesets. They're all made for kids. Hell, SWG even CHANGED their game AFTER it was launched and successfully underway so it would CATER TO A YOUNGER AUDIENCE so they could get a bigger subscription base (the NGE expansion, which totally ruined the game).

It's not personal. I believe you would also like different rulesets but you've just probably never seen them. WoW would be a fine game if I'd never seen anything better. But I have and I know it's possible. One day you will too (Darkfall is coming out soon), and you'll realize why so many people resent WoW's impact on the MMO world. WoW took us a few steps forward (graphics) but many steps back (kiddie rulesets).

It's not an insult to anybody, really. Don't take it personally. It's just that some of us are cursed with the knowledge that it can be so much better.

Heya, OP coming back in to check on stuff. Very intersting replies.

As an update, I will let you know that I'm trying out Tabula Rasa right now and like it so far. Probably because it's different, fast-paced, and well... different.

Secondly, I've bought some time on EVE. My character on there is Vorge. PLEASE look me up. If I'm going to decide on staying with EVE, I'll need a community. RP-preferred, but really I'll take any help or company. The EVE universe is WAAAY too big to be alone in

Also, I realized I had some time left on Lotro, so I'm going to give it one last go. Lotro is done very nicely and has heart... but something about it just doesn't give me motivation to play. I know this is a common phenomenon for a good number of players, and so I probably won't stick with Lotro.

Lastly, if I can't seem to attach myself to EVE again, Tabula Rasa becomes dull and loses it's "new game appeal," and Lotro still doesn't hold my attention... I'll be returning to WoW and my 60 or so Draenei Warrior.

Thanks for all the input~ and keep it coming if you want

    <- Says it all.

I never found sitting firing beams at an asteroid or shooting things in the far distance in an INSTANCED, dead space pocket to be much fun.

It isn't instanced.  People can probe you out and kill you at the very worst, or probe you and steal from you.  It is all in the same world, and anyone has access.  Only difference is, it is hidden from the rest of the world, and unless your wanting to go find them, they remain hidden.  This is not an instance.
