EQ2, I think is more instanced, and bit too easy compartively. EQ2 is more polished dont get me wrong, however I see Vanguard as being more appealing to the crowd who has long sought after a more hardcore game akin to eq1.

    EQ2

    • More complete
    • Less buggy
    • More polish
    • Easier (harder to die, faster leveling, easer to get high-end gear)

    Vanguard

    • Prettier graphics and more realistic level design (if you have a super computer)
    • Combat system, character abilities, strategies and character classes are more complex
    • Harder (eiser to die, slower leveling, harder to get high-end gear)
    • Interesting world and lore.

Vanguard reminds me a lot of EQ1 with most of the annoying features removed and all the modern features (public teleportation, mounts, houses, boats, email, flying mounts etc) you expect to see. I recommend Vanguard over EQ2 is you want a bit more depth and can tolerate the bugs.

i have played eq2. i wonder whats better about vg combat?

vg combat is a bit more sophisticated.  It has all the features of EQ2 combat but also has chain abilities, when you crit with an ability several chains become possible as followup abilities.  It also has reactive abilities that are possible when certain conditions occur during combat like you parry an attack.  It has defensive abilities that you can use on your defensive target like do a shield block preventing an attack from hitting them.  It has counterspelling where a caster can see what the spell the mob is casting and cast a quick counterspell to prevent the spell from going off.  This can be huge in certain fights.

The system also has combat differences for each class.  Some classes use mana for spells, some use endurance for combat arts, some use build up points like chi for monks.  Endurance is the gate on combat abilities not primarily cooldowns although abilities do have cooldowns most of them are very short so it is only gated by energy.  Blow through a bunch of normal attacks and you may not have enough energy to do a chain attack when the opportunity occurs.

VG combat just has more variables and is more entertaining.  Playing my rogue on VG is considerably more interesting then my swashbuckler in eq2.  In eq2 I'm basically running through my CA in a certain order and then waiting for them to ungray.  In VG I'm doing opening abilities, watching my energy, waiting for chains and reactive abilities and then deciding which one to use.  Positional stuff and things like stuns, etc are somewhat similar.  Both classes can stun mobs or force them to turn and do back attacks and stuff.  Just VG has all the extra factors that make you have to pay more attention and decide between various strategies and attacks.

Oh another thing is that the environment feels more like EQ then EQ2.  Meaning there are less mobs that are tied together.  Social agro is a bigger factor.  Agro ranges seems a bit larger.  It is kinda hard to put my finger on about why it feels more eq like...

Combat is hard to comment on. Combat in most of the major games (EQ2, WOW, DAoC, LotRO) all feel pretty much the same to me.

I like Vanguard combat because the fights are a bit longer than WoW. Also because of Vanguard’s complexity it seems to give you more options vs WoW or EQ2 as far as combat strategy goes. I like the vanguard critical hit system a lot, better than EQ2s combat chain system or whatever it is called.

Vanguard has some very innovative combat classes like the Disciple. Think of an EQ1 / 2 monk that can heal himself and his party by fighting.

I agree with a lot of the points above in regard to instanced vs. non-instanced, complexity, combat differences etc.

To summarize my comparison of the two games I would say EQ2 felt linear and somewhat scripted.  I also felt like the outcome of any particular battle or quest was known ahead of time based on your level alone and not your skill.

For example, the event that finally led me to quit EQ2 was trying to take out a group a gnolls with my shammy.  By clicking on one, you saw exactly what level they were and which ones were linked.  No matter what I did or the combat choices I made, the outcome was always identical and I ended up running away.  In VG, I feel like there are many more choices and possible outcomes for any given encounter based on the game mechanics.

However, in all fairness to EQ2, I've heard the've revamped combat, taken out the auto-linked mobs and made some nice improvements.
